Race 1 No. 1 CALVI- ($4.20)

CALVI can go close in the opener on Werribee Cup day. The Danny O’Brien-trained galloper has had two career runs and didn’t do much on debut back in May but resumed with a solid 3rd at Kyneton on November 15 over the 1850m. He settled midfield and was solid late in the piece on what was the slower section of the track, finishing 3rd behind Here With Me. The son of Sea The Stars gives the impression that the 2000m should suit and this does not look to be a strong maiden.

Race 8 No. 1 HOLBIEN- ($7)

Keen on HOLBIEN at the each-way quote in the Werribee Cup. The veteran galloper takes a bit of time to get going in his preparations and showed improvement at Group 3 level a week ago when 3rd in the Eclipse Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield. He was ridden more aggressively in that race, settling on the speed before sticking on to go a very healthy 13.6 lengths faster than standard benchmark. The Steve Richards-trained galloper performs well on the back-up and will look to cross in a race that doesn’t appear to have too much pressure inside of him.
