Race-by-race
Race 1: Xxxx Hcp — 11:38, 1531m
Silken Salute is the one I want to be with, and I’m not trying to be clever about it. The horse is already a winner, carries the grandstand rug (130), and gets A Mallyon</strong) which is a proper “we’re here to win” booking in a two year old handicap. You don’t need a thesis beyond that: in these early-season juveniles, a proven winner with a rider who can control the race is usually the right starting point.
There’s also a small but positive Eagle Farm note: Silken Salute has won on its only start here. That’s not a specialist tag, it’s simply confirmation that the track didn’t bother it when it mattered.
The main pushback comes from Brumal. Same ‘last start winner’ profile, a touch lighter (127.8), and the Munce stable tends to place their youngsters to be competitive. The knock is barrier 6 versus Silken Salute’s 8; neither is a gift, but Brumal might land the cleaner stalking run if they dawdle.

The danger I’m respecting is Viale. If Viale is close enough at the bend, Thompson can make two decisions and end the race.
Gollan has numbers in this race too and that matters at this track. Arisphere, Surprise Honey, and Balance The Books are all from the barn that’s had 104 runners here, and that’s not random participation. Still, the wide draws for Arisphere (8) and Balance The Books (10) make them work for it in a short-run sprint.
Staking: Tarps to win. Quinella saver with Viale if you’re playing exotics, because Thompson is the one rider I don’t want beating me at Eagle Farm when I’m on a short-priced map horse.
Race 3: Fresh Selections Hcp (C6) — 12:48, 1974m
This is the best betting race on the meeting because it gives you something solid: a fit horse in winning form, a gate that lets the jockey choose, and a distance that exposes any soft spots. I’m with Jenni Moreese.
Her form says it all: 142111. That’s a mare in the habit of winning, and at 1974m I’m happy to be with the runner that’s finishing races off rather than the one that needs the perfect tempo.
