Barrier draws matter at Mornington on sprint-heavy programs, and today’s card is basically a three-race study in who lands the clean run when the speed comes on. Two of the three races are 1094m, the other’s 1312m, and all three look like they’ll be decided by position and timing rather than some grand staying engine.
I’ve mapped this like I would for a mate: who gets the soft lead, who gets dragged into the race too early, and which stables have turned up with horses that are going the right way right now. You’ll get my straight take on each race, plus where I’d actually put my money. This is your set of Mornington racing tips that respects the small-sample track stats and leans on form and race shape where it should.
Mornington — the setup
Three races on turf, all short-course. With that sort of menu, I’m always thinking: can my pick hold a spot early without burning petrol, and can they get off the fence at the right time. The data for course specialists is thin across today’s fields, so I’m not dressing up 1-from-1 or 2-from-2 as something it isn’t. There is one clear little angle worth using, though: Luke Cartwright has ridden this track well recently. From three rides at Mornington he’s won twice and hit the frame twice, so while that’s not a “jockey owns the place” sample, it is enough to take note when he turns up with a horse drawn to get the right run.
Race-by-race predictions
Race 1: Asset Painting Services Mornington Sires — 11:50, 1094m
The question here is simple: do you side with the proven winner in a race full of unknown ceilings, or do you gamble that the stable debutants have come up above average?
I’m with The Speed Machine (gate 2) to win. You don’t need a complex story: he’s 1 from 1, he draws to hold a spot without doing anything silly, and the Price and Kent camp rarely wastes a sharp one in these sorts of early-day set-ups. Over 1094m, I want the horse that can land in the first four without spending, and this draw gives Thomas Stockdale options if the inside is playing kindly.
The danger is Mistifyzou (gate 5). The form line (61) says she’s got ability and she’s well weighted at 123.4. If she finds the right back to follow and the leaders overdo it, she’s the one I can see slicing through late.
Among the “talent but with a query” types, Knurl (gate 10) has the look of a horse that can run very well and still get beaten if he’s caught wide early. His recent form includes a placing last start (410-3), but that gate forces Hugh Coffey to make a decision quickly, and two-year-old races punish hesitation.
Staking: Win bet The Speed Machine. Exacta saver with Mistifyzou running second if you want some protection.
Race 2: 200 Plus Podcast (Bm74) — 12:20, 1094m
This one reads like a market problem waiting to happen: a BM74 over 1094m with a stack of wide draws and a couple of horses that look like they’ll keep rolling forward until someone blinks. If you back a backmarker, you’re basically buying traffic.
I want Aqueduct (gate 9) on top. The recent form is the right shape (9-4711) and, more importantly, it screams confidence: this horse has been winning, not just “making ground”. In the last 90 days Aqueduct has had four runs for two wins, which is the sort of strike you can build a bet around even without pretending it guarantees anything today. The McEvoy stable is the other tick; they’ve also got a two-year-old in the first, and that kind of team presence usually means the day’s been targeted.
The jockey angle is not huge, but it’s positive: Aqueduct is ridden by Molly Bourke and her only previous Mornington ride finished unplaced. That’s not a knock, it’s just not an edge. The edge is the horse’s current momentum and the fact this race looks like it will reward a runner that can take a position and kick off the bend.
The main danger is Du Clisson (gate 1). The inside draw is gold in these races if the horse has enough toe to hold it, and his form (021-13) says he’s honest and in the fight most starts. If Aqueduct sits three-deep or gets caught working, Du Clisson can absolutely pinch it.
If you want a spicy inclusion for wider multiples, La Astro Chat (gate 3) profiles as the kind that either runs top two or never gets clear. Pat Carey and Harris Walker’s runner has been racing consistently (12-117), and that draw gives a chance to camp and hold a spot.
Staking: Win bet Aqueduct. Save on Du Clisson if the tote is telling you the inside is where you want to be.
Race 3: Catanach’s Jewellers (Bm70) — 12:55, 1312m
The shape is the story: 1312m at Mornington gives you just enough time for the race to settle, but not enough time to fix a bad early decision. If you’re posted wide without cover, you’re cooked by the 400m.
I’m keen on Body Of Venus (gate 3) as the day’s best bet. She comes in with form that reads like a horse in control of her grade (316-11), she draws to stalk the speed, and she gets Hugh Coffey, who’s good at keeping these rolling types balanced before the sprint goes on. The last 90 days are a small sample (two runs) but it’s still meaningful: she’s won both of them. That’s not “she can’t lose”, that’s simply the right profile for a BM70 where plenty of others have recent knocks in their form.
There are dangers, but they come with caveats. Gellhorn (gate 1) gets the cosy draw and Luke Cartwright, who has been the most effective rider at this track on the numbers we have. Cartwright’s Mornington record is only three rides, so I’m not turning it into folklore, but it does matter in a race where timing and balance count. The concern is Gellhorn’s recent pattern (8119-5): he can win, but he can also miss the jump and put himself out of it.
Miss Mahjong (gate 12) is the other big threat. She’s going well (2511-3) and she looks like a mare who will keep finding. The problem is obvious: that gate. If she’s forced to go back and circle, she’ll need them to run along enough to bring her into it.
This is also the race where I’d be watching the market late. If Drone Attack (gate 9) firms, it’ll tell you the yard expects another forward run. His form (4-75612) suggests he’s building and his draw is workable if he can tuck in.

The plays
I’m not trying to be a hero on a three-race meeting. I’d rather bet like a grown-up: one strong opinion, one secondary play, and then protect yourself from the obvious map risks.
NAP: Body Of Venus (Race 3, 12:55). She’s won her last two and draws gate 3 to get the run of the race in a 1312m handicap where plenty of rivals have negatives in either barrier or recent pattern.
Value: Du Clisson (Race 2, 12:20). Gate 1 at Mornington sprints can make an honest horse look very good. If Aqueduct has to work early, Du Clisson becomes the one that can pinch it.
Banker for multis: The Speed Machine (Race 1, 11:50). The map from gate 2 is the selling point in a two-year-old race where wide draws can turn talent into bad luck.
Each-way type: Mistifyzou (Race 1). She’s got winning form (61) and a soft weight; she only needs a clean back to follow to be in the finish.
Course angle to keep in mind: Luke Cartwright is the only rider on today’s card with a meaningful recent “track feel” in the numbers we have here, and he turns up twice, including the inside draw in Race 3. Next Mornington meeting, any Cartwright ride from a low gate is worth a second look before you even open the form.
