Narrogin Racing Tips 23 April — can Four Seas go back to back?

Racingbase Staff Racingbase Staff

Opening

There’s one horse on this Narrogin card that’s already answered the local question: Four Seas has been here once and won, and now turns up in a little Benchmark where most of his rivals are either hoping the track suits or praying the race falls apart.

That’s the anchor point, but it’s not the whole story. We’ve got three races, all on turf, and two of them are maidens where the map and the weights matter as much as the form string. These Narrogin racing tips are written the way you’d talk it through with a mate: what’s likely to happen early, who gets favours from barriers, who’s trending forward, and where I’d actually put my money.

One quick note before we dive in: there isn’t much deep course history in today’s fields. A lot of the “track stats” are single starts, so I’ll treat them as hints, not gospel.

Narrogin — the setup

We’re working with limited course form across the meeting. Most runners have only one visit to Narrogin (or none), which is fine, but it means we lean harder on race shape, barriers, weights and whether the recent form reads like a horse building to a peak.

Still, a couple of angles are worth keeping in the back pocket:

  • Jordan Turner has ridden here twice and placed both times. It’s only two rides, but it does tell you he handles the circuit.
  • Jefferson Tsang has had three rides at the track for a win. That’s an emerging pattern rather than a “specialist” stamp, but he’s a rider I want on-side when the race gets tactical.
  • MS S L Miller has sent four runners to Narrogin and three have placed. Again, not enough volume to shout percentages, but it’s a stable that often brings them fit enough to be competitive.

Race-by-race tips

Race 1: Farmworks Narrogin Mdn — 13:41, 2078m

Pretey Royal looks the right horse to cop the work and still be there at the business end. The form line is the big tell: 5-78622 says he’s not guessing anymore, he’s knocking on the door. In a staying maiden like this, that profile usually beats the “maybe one day” types, because you can actually trust him to run the trip and keep responding when pressure goes on.

Barrier eight isn’t perfect, but it’s also not the carpark in a 10-horse field, and the weight (123.4) sits nicely in the context of this set weights style maiden. The stable has a decent Narrogin feel too: MS S L Miller has had four runners at the track and three have managed to place, which is enough to respect the placement.

The danger is Infrastructure. He’s lightly raced (03-83), and that “3” at Narrogin matters more than it looks because it means he’s already coped with the place once. He draws six, and if he lands in the first half without spending fuel, he’s the one that can pinch it if the favourite-for-us is forced to sit wide too long.

Staking: Win bet Pretey Royal. Small saver exacta Pretey Royal with Infrastructure if you’re playing exotics.

Race 2: Vidler Veterinary Mdn — 14:20, 1301m

Here’s the puzzle: do you side with the horse who keeps putting himself in the fight, or the one who’s had plenty of chances but is finally getting the right run set-up?

I’m with Artie’s Eclipse. The form 7-2372 is the clearest “about to win” signal in the race, and the weight swing helps: 123.4 is friendly for a three-year-old in this grade. He also draws ten, which sounds ugly until you look at what matters at 1301m in a maiden: you want a horse that can find a spot without getting cluttered up. From out there, Ava Catarino can slide across, park with cover, and get him rolling before the sprint goes on.

The small Narrogin note is positive without being overstated: Artie’s Eclipse has been here once and placed. That’s a data point, but it’s a good one, because plenty of horses don’t travel to these meetings and handle the rhythm first time.

The danger is I’m A Soulman. He draws five, which is the kind of gate that lets Rocky Cheung ride a quiet race and pop at the right time. His recent string 28-042 says he’s close enough, and if the leaders hand it to the midfield, he’s right in it.

A quick word on Foxy Rascal (gate one): Jordan Turner has placed in both his rides at Narrogin. It’s only two, but if you’re shopping for a place chance at odds, that’s the “get the run of the race” horse.

Staking: Win bet Artie’s Eclipse. If the price is skinny, play him win with a saver quinella including I’m A Soulman.

Race 3: Tabtouch Supports Narrogin Racing (Bm46+) — 14:55, 1301m

The market will make Four Seas the story, and honestly, it should. He’s the only runner on the card who’s already come to Narrogin, seen the place once, and won. That’s not a “track specialist” claim, it’s just a simple fact: he’s handled the trip and the day before, and some of these won’t.

What I like even more is that he arrives with a proper racing rhythm. The recent form 356571 includes a win, and his last 90 days reads like a horse in form rather than a horse searching for it: four runs for one win (and he’s picked up prize money along the way). In a Benchmark 46+ where plenty are patchy, current sharpness goes a long way.

Map-wise, gate six gives Casey Hunter options. He doesn’t need to lead, but he can be positive if the inside horses hesitate. The only knock is he carries 127.8, so he does have to be the best horse in the race, not just the best story.

I’m That Girl is the obvious danger. She draws two, and her form 490372 suggests she’s right in the zone. If she holds a spot and gets the first crack while Four Seas is still building from the 600m, she can steal the march.

Staking: Win bet Four Seas. If you’re multi-building, he’s the banker leg on the meeting, but keep it sensible because it’s still a small-country Benchmark where weird things happen.

The plays

NAP: Four Seas (Race 3, 14:55). One run at Narrogin for one win tells you he’s already coped with the circuit, and his recent form has a proper winning spike rather than endless “almosts”.

Value: Pretey Royal (Race 1, 13:41) if the market leaves him alone because he hasn’t won yet. Two straight seconds in the lead-up is the right kind of pressure-testing for a 2078m maiden.

Banker for multis: Four Seas. Not because he’s unbeatable, but because he’s the one runner today with a clean, simple edge: in-form and already proven at Narrogin.

Each-way play: Artie’s Eclipse (Race 2, 14:20). The profile screams “ready”, and he’s placed on his only Narrogin start, which is enough to trust he’ll show up again.

Course angle to remember: keep an eye on MS S L Miller when they bring one here. Four runners at Narrogin for three placings is a decent early read that the stable places them to compete, not to sightsee.

Next Narrogin meeting, I want to see whether Casey Hunter keeps being aggressive from midfield gates here, because if riders start winning by making their own luck, the map will matter even more than the ratings.

FAQ

What time does racing start at Narrogin today?

Racing kicks off at 13:41 with the Farmworks Narrogin Mdn over 2078m.

Who are the top jockeys and trainers at Narrogin on today’s card?

On today’s runners, Rocky Cheung has the most exposure at the track with six rides previously. Jefferson Tsang has three rides here for a win, which is a nice emerging pattern. Trainer-wise, MS S L Miller has had four runners at Narrogin and three have placed, so their pair in Race 1 (Pretey Royal) and Race 1 again (Twilight Spirit) deserves respect on placement alone.

What are the best bets at Narrogin today?

The meeting revolves around Four Seas in Race 3 (14:55). He won on his only Narrogin start and comes in with a recent win in his form line. The other two I want on-side are Pretey Royal in the staying maiden (Race 1) and Artie’s Eclipse in Race 2, both off form that reads like a breakthrough is close.

Where can I find the best odds for Narrogin races?

Shop around with your usual bookmakers before you bet. Odds weren’t available in the feed at time of writing, so don’t assume one book is best. If you’re comparing, check at least two or three books close to jump time, because country meetings can move sharply late.
