A Group 1 race for three-year-old fillies, the Surround Stakes has often produced a quality filly that has gone on to claim a lot more Group 1 success.

Surround Stakes Barrier Draw – When, Where And How Does It Work?

The barrier draw and final field for the 2025 Surround Stakes will be available shortly after 9am on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

Barriers for each of the fillies in the race is determined randomly using a computer which will complete the final field for the race.

Horses competing in the Surround Stakes can often progress towards the Coolmore Classic, Doncaster Mile, Vinery Stud Stakes and/or Australian Oaks.

Is There A Draw Bias in the Surround Stakes?

The winners of the Surround Stakes over the past two decades have been spread out with middle barriers boasting the most wins. Barriers 3-7 have produced a total of 14 winners since 2000.

One of the interesting things about the race is that the field size can be fairly small (around eight runners), but then can just as easily be a field of 15. This makes it a little difficult to assess whether there is a barrier draw bias.

Without conclusive proof, it appears that drawing barrier seven or less is a great starting point for winning the Surround Stakes.
