Verry Elleegant Stakes Runner-By-Runner Guide

Queensland Oaks winners

The Verry Elleegant Stakes (formerly the Chipping Norton Stakes) pits some quality gallopers up against one another and we take a look at the Chipping Norton Stakes horses.

Here is our runner-by-runner look at the Verry Elleegant Stakes horses.

2021 Chipping Norton Stakes Horses

1. KOLDING $4.80
One of six in the field of 10 that come out of the Apollo Stakes (1400m), Kolding was runner-up in that race behind Colette, beaten two lengths. Third up last time he produced what was one of his better performances by going 11.4 lengths faster than standard benchmark when winning the George Main Stakes (1600m) at the track and trip but he might need a Good surface to make up the ground on Colette.

2. AVILIUS $15
The seven-year-old returns for another preparation but has not win since taking out the George Main Stakes (1600m) in 2019. He has been competitive enough in recent first up runs but it is hard to see him troubling some of the favoured runners.

3. SOUTHERN FRANCE $81
The 2019 Zipping Classic (2400m) winner battled in his two runs last year and is likely to need a lot further than the 1600m.

4. MASTER OF WINE $12
The Team Hawkes galloper didn’t quite live up to the hype last year and finished a mile back when resuming in the Winx Stakes (2000m), He wasn’t far away in Group 1 company at Flemington after that but not sure he has the brilliance to trouble the likes of Colette and Verry Elleegant.

5. PRINCE FAWAZ $81
Outsider that was a long last in the Apollo Stakes and it is hard to see him turning the tables here.

6. VERRY ELLEEGANT $2.70
One of four mares in the race, Verry Elleegant finished just over two lengths from Colette when resuming in the Apollo Stakes. In the 1400m race, she settled in the second half and they went very slow early on. The three-time Group 1 winner from the spring of 2020 produced the fastest 600m-400m before being held up and losing momentum. She chased well but lacked the dash late in the piece. Chris Waller’s five-year-old will take improvement off that but may need this before she hits peak form and finished 4th behind Kolding in the George Main when second up last year.

7. COLLETTE $3.30
The Australian Oaks (2400m) winner from 2020 returned in style by taking out the Apollo Stakes. She missed out on Good tracks early on at her last preparation before taking out the Golden Eagle (1500m) on the Heavy and is unbeaten on rain effected tracks. She went just five lengths faster than standard in the Apollo and seemed suited by the sit-sprint. But she is capable of raising the bar higher and did go 13 lengths faster than standard in the Adrian Knox (2000m) last year. Only Verry Elleegant and Kolding have produced superior figures in the past two years, while this girl seems like she is on an upwards trajectory.

8. FUNSTAR $11
One of four in the race for Chris Waller, Funstar is another that comes out of the Apollo Stakes, finishing 4th that day. She may just be a tier behind the top liners and hasn’t won since leading all the way to defeat Probabeel in the Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) last March. However, that was at her second run of that preparation and she improved on figures that day, just like she did in the spring when runner-up to Wild Planet in the Theo Marks Stakes (1300m). She is not out of it and the 1600m should suit.

9. TOFFEE TONGUE $26
Ran 6th in the Apollo Stakes and it might be worth waiting until she gets out to the 2000m.
