Race 1: Grogans Machinery Mdn Plate — 13:00, 1422m
Brilliant Bull Ant is the one I want to be with because the profile screams “ready to stop finding one better”. That form line of 6-9-4-6-2-2 tells the story: he’s moved from being competitive to being a genuine threat, and now he just needs the race to fall his way. The catch is the gate. Barrier 15 over 1422m at Bendigo is a genuine nuisance, and Teodore Nugent will have to make an early decision: press forward and risk being posted, or snag back and trust the run-on.
I’m still siding with him because he’s been holding his form in a way most of these haven’t, and he’s been a consistent earner lately: four runs since May for three placings and an average finish of 2.0. That’s not a winner’s stat, but it’s a “keeps turning up” stat, and it matters in a maiden.
The danger is Foxtrot Charlie (gate 4). Dylan Dunn is a neat booking for this grade, and the horse’s 3-0-3 reads like he’s got the ability but just hasn’t put a race away yet. From a soft draw he gets the run Brilliant Bull Ant might not.
Play: Win bet Brilliant Bull Ant, but only if the market doesn’t punish you for the wide gate. If he’s forced to be ridden cold from 15, keep stakes sensible. Exacta saver with Foxtrot Charlie running second.
Race 2: Mcdonald Electrical Mdn Plate — 13:30, 1203m
This looks like a race where the inside matters, because a few of these have shown enough early speed tendencies to make it awkward for anything posted wide. I keep coming back to Shapenapit from barrier 2. The form (2-5-2-2) says he’s around the mark, and Jordan Childs is a sensible “deliver the horse at the right time” rider in these races. If Shapenapit lands one-out, one-back with cover, I think he’s the most likely to actually finish the job.
The Moody and Coleman pair have two here, and while their overall Bendigo record from 11 runners hasn’t been a place machine, they’re not turning up for photos either. The problem is we don’t have a recent-results snapshot for Shapenapit in the stats feed, so I’m staking him more as a tactical play than a “numbers say yes”.
The danger is Eyes Of Blue who at least brings a clean recent sign: one run since May for a placing and a third on average. With Emily Pozman taking 122.3kg and a midfield gate, he’s the type who can tag the speed and get first crack when they fan.
One I’ll forgive at odds is Sumaluv (gate 1) for the Maher and Allen combination. The form is ugly (9-0-0), but inside draws in 1200m maidens can turn “plain” into “competitive” quickly if they control where they land.
Play: Shapenapit win. Small saver each-way Eyes Of Blue if the price is there.
Race 3: Workforce Extensions Mdn Plate — 14:00, 1094m
The market will probably gravitate to the bigger names in the saddle, but the horse I actually trust to run his race is Surviving Star. He’s only had the one start and finished fourth, which is a solid foundation for a sharp 1094m maiden, and the Kavanagh stable booking Ben Rawiller reads like intent. Rawiller hasn’t won at Bendigo from 13 rides, but he has five placings and he’s the sort of rider who can turn a raw horse’s inexperience into a clean 400m sprint when it counts.
The obvious query is barrier 12. If he’s caught wide and doing work, you’ll feel silly. But in smallish fields over short trips, a horse that can sustain a run can still be the right horse even from out there, especially if the inside brigade overdo it early.
Ironic Fortune is the clear “don’t be stubborn” danger. He’s been around the mark before (2-6-4-6-0) and gets barrier 2 to stalk. Just don’t fall in love with the Bendigo run line: he’s had one start here and ran 10th, so treat that as a single data point, nothing more.
Play: Surviving Star win. If you want cover, quinella with Ironic Fortune rather than trying to be too clever.

Race 4: Sheahan Plumbing Mdn Plate — 14:30, 1531m
Here’s the race I’m happiest to get around, because we’ve got a horse with repeatable behaviour. Kandinsky</strong has been building across a prep: 4-2-3-4. That’s the kind of sequence where you can stop asking “can he run” and start asking “does he get his chance”. Jordan Childs rides, and the Price and Kent team usually has their horses fit enough to hold a long run when others are changing legs. From gate 4, he should land in the first half without doing anything aggressive.
He’s also at the right stage of his racing life. Two runs since May for a second and a fourth, and an average finishing position of 2.0 across that window. Again, that’s not a guarantee, but it’s a very clear sign he’s holding his level.
The danger is Olive Road, simply because three straight placings (2-2-3) puts her right in the finish again if she sees daylight. The map is the worry: barrier 12 over 1531m can force her to either snag back and rely on tempo, or creep forward without cover and risk being the one they all take aim at.
If you want a knockout exacter, Carry Trade is the hardy type (U-2-3-2) who keeps finding the line. He’s not flashy, but he’s honest, and that’s half the battle at this trip in maidens.
Play: Kandinsky win. Box exacta Kandinsky and Olive Road for insurance if you think the wide gate doesn’t hurt as much as it reads.
The plays
I’m leaning into two angles today: riders who consistently do the right thing at Bendigo, and horses that keep turning up in the finish rather than teasing us once and disappearing. The NAP is Kandinsky in the 2:30pm. He’s been knocking on the door all prep, draws to get every chance, and Jordan Childs can put him in the race without wasting petrol.
