Broome on the dirt can make smart horses look ordinary and ordinary horses look like they have found religion. That is why I keep coming back to one simple question for this meeting: do you trust the proven Broome runners to do it again, even when the handicapper leans on them?
There are only two races, so we can be picky. Race 1 is the classic Broome problem: a horse with real course form in Close Talker asked to carry plenty, with a couple of lighter-weight types trying to pinch it if the tempo drops. Race 2 looks the better betting race because the map and the class profiles line up more cleanly, and the inside gate brings a key runner right into it. Trainer patterns are clearer again. J McLaughlin has the volume and the wins here: 53 runners for 11 winners, and 23 placings. Sue Olive does not have the same raw strike, but she places 13 of 21 at Broome which is the sort of “show up and run well” profile you can build multis around.

Race-by-race (Broome predictions)
Race 1: Bossong Engineering (Bm50+) — 13:25, 1569
The market can argue with me all it likes, but I am starting this meeting by trusting the proven Broome horse. Close Talker is the runner with the cleanest “I can actually do it here” profile, and the gate (2) gives Jason Li every chance to park him in the first few without spending silly petrol.
Close Talker is not a model of consistency, but the recent profile says he is still competitive: four runs in the last 90 days for a win and a placing, and an average finishing position of 4.25. That is not superstar stuff, but in a Broome BM50+ it is enough if you get the right run. More importantly, he has had three goes at Broome for one win, so we are not guessing whether he handles the dirt.
The main tactical question is how hard they go early. From barrier 1, Rulesque (K Yuill up) can hold a spot and make it a proper test. That matters because Close Talker concedes weight to some that will try to sprint late. If they crawl, the race turns into who has the best change-up, and weight can bite. If they run it honestly, I would rather be on the horse that can sustain a run and has already won here.
Rulesque is the danger because Yuill at Broome is the sort of rider who can win races in the first 200 metres. Rulesque has also been in the money twice from three Broome visits, and those placings make him a legitimate threat if he gets control from the inside. He does not win often on the numbers in the last 90 days (three runs, no wins), but he keeps himself in the fight with that placing record.
Smokey for multiples: Topaz. She comes in light (119.0), has four Broome starts with a win, and her recent 90-day return (five runs for a win and another placing) says she is still in form. She does not need to be much better than her usual to pick up the pieces if the top two eyeball each other.
Staking: Win bet Close Talker. Small saver quinella with Rulesque if you want protection against the inside gate and the Yuill effect.
Race 2: BK Signs (Bm58+) — 14:05, 1766
This is the race where I want to have my proper bet, because the setup is screaming “the soft run wins”. Bondi Queen gets the kind of profile I love at Broome: a lighter weight (115.7), a midfield gate that keeps options open (4), and a rider in Jefferson Tsang who hits the frame 16 times from 26 rides at this track. That is not fluff. That is a body of work.
She is also the one horse in this field with a clear trajectory in the formline. Her last six reads 6-4441, which is the pattern of a runner that finally worked it out and now gets to build on it. She has only had one run at Broome, so I am not going to pretend she is a track horse, but she did not disgrace herself in that visit and her overall recent average finishing position sits at a very workable 2.0 across the last 90 days.
The opposition has angles, but they come with catches. Border Force carries the grandstand (135.5) and draws 5. He can win if he is simply better than them, but he is being asked to do it the hard way under weight. Lucky Landing draws 2 which helps, but his Broome record is three runs for no placings and his recent three-run set has not produced a top-three finish. That is the sort of runner you want to see do it before you pay for it.
The one I can see beating Bondi Queen if the race shape flips is Shoulder Patch from barrier 1. He has three Broome runs with a placing, and the inside gate lets Casey Hunter take luck out of it. Hunter has not had much joy at Broome from volume rides, but an inside draw can make a rider look a lot better in a small field. If Shoulder Patch holds the rail and the tempo turns messy, he is the one who can pinch it.

Staking: Win bet Bondi Queen. Save on Shoulder Patch if the market pushes him out to a backable price, because barrier 1 on dirt can turn “solid place chance” into “hard to run down”.
Where the money goes
I am keeping this simple. Two races, no need to invent complications.
NAP: Bondi Queen (Race 2, 14:05). The low weight and the Tsang booking make sense, and her recent form progression says she is improving rather than treading water.
Value: Topaz (Race 1, 13:25). She has enough Broome evidence to be taken seriously and she maps to get a chance without the big weights some of the others carry.
Banker for multis: Bondi Queen to run a place. I would rather trust the light weight and the rider’s Broome placing strike than take short odds about a topweight grinding them into the dirt.
Each-way look: Rulesque (Race 1). Barrier 1 plus Yuill at Broome can carry a horse a long way, and he has placed in two of three course visits.
Course angle: When K Yuill is in the race at Broome, you have to respect the ride. Eight wins and 15 placings from 27 at the track is a proper sample, and it shows up again today with two live chances from good gates.
Next Broome meeting, keep an eye on how often the winning rides come from the first two pairs in running. If they keep controlling the mid-race like they often do on dirt, barriers will matter even more than the weights.
