There are some tracks where you can ignore the jockey trend and just back the horse. Cairns usually is not one of them. When MS L Morrison turns up here, it matters, and the numbers are big enough to trust: 44 rides at the course for 16 wins, and she lands in the placings more often than not. That becomes the spine of the meeting because she is not just riding one in a feature, she is threaded through the card with genuine winning chances.
So that is the angle for today’s Cairns racing tips. Seven races on turf, mostly in that 1000m to 1500m pocket where barrier and rhythm decide races before the straight even arrives. I have one race I want to bet into properly, a couple where the play is to keep stakes sensible, and two maidens where you should treat confidence like a scarce resource.
Cairns, the setup
We do not have much deep horse course history exposed in these fields, and that is fine. The runners with meaningful track patterns are thin on the ground, so I am leaning harder on current form, map, and the Cairns rider and trainer profiles that do have proper sample.

Horse course form is mostly one or two visits across today’s fields. The few with 3 or more Cairns runs are more “reliable to show up” than “track specialists”, so I will call those profiles out in the race previews where they matter.
Race-by-race
Race 1: Ladbrokes Place Extra To 10th Mdn Plate — 11:32, 1039m
Monday Close looks the right horse to anchor the first because the profile screams “ready”: five starts in, consistently around the mark, and the barrier gives MS T Chambers options to hold a spot without burning petrol. In a 1039m maiden at Cairns, I want a runner that can land in the first half of the field early and still finish. Monday Close reads like that horse.
The race has a few that can loom without winning, so I am wary of getting cute. Any News has been building too (9-6732) and draws gate 3 with MS L Morrison, which is about as “Cairns positive” as it gets. If Morrison gets the colt into clear air at the right time, Any News can pinch it.
Smart ‘N’ Loud is the unknown that scares you a bit because it ran third on debut and that can be the best piece of form in a race like this, but it is still one run of evidence, not a pattern.
Staking: Small win bet Monday Close. Saver on Any News if the market pushes Monday Close too short.
Race 2: Coral Coast Catering Mdn Plate — 12:04, 1367m
Here is the question you have to answer: does Zig Zag Torque finally get rewarded for knocking on the door? The form line (5-822) says it is doing enough to win one of these, and the draw (5) is friendly for a 1367m start where you do not want to be snagged back to last and asked to sprint.
I like that this is not a one dimensional setup. There are plenty of runners who can take a spot, which usually means the leader does not get to walk and sprint. That suits Zig Zag Torque, who looks like it wants a genuinely run race where staying power matters more than a 200m dash.
The danger is Monday Close backing up in another maiden on the card. That is a stable tell, and the horse is honest enough to run into the money again. If it lands closer than expected from gate 9, it can out-tough them late.
Vouchers is worth a mention because it has had two Cairns runs for a win and a placing, which is as close as we get to positive course comfort in this field. Still, two runs is a data point, not a trend.
Staking: Each-way Zig Zag Torque. Small quinella saver with Monday Close if you are playing exotics.
Race 3: R & D Mcgee (Bm55) — 12:40, 1367m
The market will probably gravitate to Hot Pursuit because it comes off a win (79-091) and gets a manageable map from gate 8 if the speed is honest. But I am leaning to Fancy Garter because it keeps putting itself in the fight and it has the one bit of course stability you can bank: two Cairns runs for two placings. That is not enough to label it anything, but it does tell you the track does not beat it.
And there is a rider angle: MS L Morrison is simply the best “conversion” jockey on the meeting by a wide margin at this course. If she gets Fancy Garter into the lane without having to stop and start, it can out-finish these.
Better Breakout from gate 1 with R Wiggins is the danger because the inside draw gives it the cheap run. If they crawl mid-race, leaders and rails runners can become hard to reel in over this trip.
Staking: Win bet Fancy Garter. If you want cover, save on Hot Pursuit.
Race 4: Archers The Strata Professionals (Bm55) — 13:15, 1367m
This is the best betting race on the card because the form is solid and the map is readable. Vouchers is the one I want to be with. It has been ultra consistent (511235), it does not need everything to go right, and it has handled Cairns before: two runs here for a win and a placing. That is a neat little edge in a race where a few others are either out of form or need a very specific tempo.
There is also a class context point. A horse that keeps winning and placing in this grade is telling you it belongs in the fight every time. From a wide draw (10) it needs Dan McGillivray to make one decision early, either roll forward and sit outside the lead or slot in midfield with cover. I would rather see the positive ride, because giving away ground and relying on a last 200m sprint is how you get beaten at Cairns.
Diamond Lucy is the danger because the last start win (248761) can be the start of a new pattern, and it draws to get a soft run (6). The downside is its only course run here did not scream “loves Cairns”, but again, one run is just a snapshot.

Race 5: Rivers Insurance Hcp (C2) — 13:55, 1531m
Two horses bring proper momentum into this and they do it in different ways. Kirikan keeps turning up (332312) and looks like the type that absorbs pressure, keeps rolling, and makes others crack. The problem is the weight and the gate combination: 139.9 is a lump, and barrier 9 means R Wiggins has to spend petrol early or risk being trapped wide.
That is why I have landed on Kirkall. The form (650221) says it has found the right pattern, it draws gate 5 to land where it wants, and it gets the sort of weight that lets it sprint off the bend rather than grind. If the race is run evenly, Kirkall can pinch the break at the 400m and make Kirikan chase under a big load.
Indefinite is the danger because it keeps placing (552-62) and draws 3. With MS L Morrison on, you get the best possible chance of extracting the full finish.
Staking: Win bet Kirkall. Small saver on Indefinite if you are wary of Kirikan’s toughness.
Race 6: The Archers Advantage Hcp — 14:35, 2078m
This is where the staying trip changes the whole conversation. Over 2078m, I want a horse that has proven it can both stay and keep finding under pressure. Ready Tiger looks the most appealing because it comes in off a win (256631) and carries a weight (119.0) that keeps it in the finish if they run along at any sort of clip. Gate 6 is fine, and MS L Morrison is the sort of rider who can time the move rather than panic early.
Kureder is the danger, but it is a specific kind of danger. When it is on-song it can simply be better than these, and the form (441108) says it has that ceiling. The risk is that it has to lump 132.2 and from gate 5 it may have to do work to hold a spot. If Morrison can turn it into a stamina test, Kureder has to earn every inch.
John Joseph sits in the “if the leaders overdo it” category. It comes off a win (390761) and gets a draw that lets it settle (4). It is the one I would want in trifectas if the speed looks hotter than expected.
Staking: Each-way Ready Tiger. If Kureder is a clear favourite, I would rather save than take it on aggressively.
The plays
NAP: Vouchers (Race 4, 13:15). It has the most reliable “turn up and run to its mark” profile on the card, and it has already won at Cairns from limited exposure.
Value: Ready Tiger (Race 6, 14:35) each-way. The light weight in the staying race matters, and Morrison is the rider you want making the late call at this track.
Banker for multis: Vouchers again. If you are building anything, that is the leg I trust most.
Each-way play: Zig Zag Torque (Race 2, 12:04). It has been close enough often enough to treat it as a genuine chance, not just a place horse.
Course angle to carry forward: when Morrison has a live chance at Cairns, you can bet it without flinching. Sixteen wins from 44 rides here is not noise, it is the meeting’s clearest edge, and she gets enough opportunities today to make it pay.
