There are meetings where you start with a horse. Today at Eagle Farm, I’m starting with a rider. Martist looks like the one they’ve found the right race for, and I’m happy to keep it simple early. He’s the only last-start winner in the field (form “1”), he gets a good gate (barrier 3), and the Maloney booking is a clear “push the button” move. When Maloney rides Eagle Farm like he usually does, he gives you a soft run and a clean crack — and that’s gold in juvenile handicaps where the ones doing it tough can’t absorb pressure.
The recent form snapshot supports the idea that he’s in the right spot now: in the last 90 days he’s had one run for one win. That’s not a trend — it’s just confirmation that we’re dealing with a 2YO who has already learned how to win.
The danger is Gold Czech. That “6-1” line screams improvement, and barrier 4 keeps him close enough to stalk without needing to be bustled early. If Martist overraces or gets softened up mid-race, Gold Czech is the one with the upside to pinch it late.
I’m less interested in making excuses for the rest. Doubtwilly (form “13”) and Hit A Lick (form “5”) need to find a fair bit, and while Apostle has already placed and has placed on his only Eagle Farm run, he’s drawn a touch wider (6) and may need things to fall his way.
Play: Win bet Martist. If you’re playing multiples, save with a small exacta/quinella around Gold Czech.
Race 2: Moreton Hire (Bm80) — 12:48, 2638m
Here’s the question that matters: do you want the in-form winner with the right stable, or the fitter grinder who keeps putting himself in the fight? I’m siding with Liberty Park (Waller/Thornton) because he comes into this off a win (form “3-6861”), carries a manageable weight (119.0), and he’s drawn to get the right kind of staying run (barrier 4) rather than be forced into a messy early decision.
Waller’s Eagle Farm strike rate stands up on volume — 22 runners here for 4 winners — and in races like this I’d rather trust the stable that consistently places horses into the right grade than chase a “big weight, big name” angle. Liberty Park also reads like a horse who can hold a position and then extend, which is exactly what you want at 2600m+ when the jockeys start playing games mid-race.
The main threat is Mr O’Reilly. He’s drawn barrier 1, which is a tactical weapon at this trip, and his recent form “2-32443” says he’s forever in the finish. In the last 90 days he’s gone winless but placed half the time (4 runs, 2 placings). If this turns into a sit-and-sprint where the fence is gold, he’s the one who can make Liberty Park work for it.
Whatjeudoin’ is the wild card. The recent 90-day profile is solid (5 runs, 2 wins, 3 placings), and if du Plessis can control the tempo from barrier 6 without burning petrol, he can absolutely win. The catch is the course run we have: one Eagle Farm start for a finish well back. That’s not a red flag on its own — it’s just not evidence I can lean on.
Up top, Hadouken gives away chunks of weight (133.3) and his form is plain. Raf Attack hasn’t shown enough recently and finished well back on his only Eagle Farm run. Kureder is honest but doesn’t scream “ready to win” off that “69-544” line.

The plays
My staking is straightforward because the card is small and I’d rather bet properly than invent “action”. The NAP is Martist (Race 1, 12:13). In 2YO handicaps, I’m happy to follow the horse that has already shown it can finish the job, and the Maloney/Gollan combo is a sensible way to start the day given both have meaningful Eagle Farm volume (Gollan: 56 runners here; Maloney: 25 rides).
The value look — if the price holds up — is Mr O’Reilly in the staying BM80. Barrier 1 plus an “always there” profile is the kind of setup that often gets under-bet when punters gravitate to stable names instead of map advantages.
The banker for multis is still Martist; if he runs to his last-start win, the rest have to improve past him rather than simply repeat their own numbers.
The each-way shape is Mr O’Reilly again: four runs in the last 90 days for two placings, and he’s already placed on his only Eagle Farm start.
