Best Bets For VRC Oaks at Flemington
The Melbourne Cup Carnival continues on Thursday with Crown Oaks Day. The feature race is the VRC Oaks, which features the leading three-year-old fillies, as they bid to add their name to the roll of honour at Flemington.
The VRC Oaks is worth $1 million in prize money, and is run over 2500 metres. Last year’s renewal was won by Treasurethe Moment.
Here is a look at the best bets for the VRC Oaks and some of the supporting races on another big afternoon of racing in Victoria.
BEST BET: GETTA GOOD FEELING
VRC OAKS (Race 8)
Getta Good Feeling had the perfect preparation for the VRC Oaks with a comfortable victory in the Wakeful Stakes (3200m). She was a class above her rivals in the Group Two contest, with rider Mark Zahra having the luxury of easing his runner up in the closing stages of the race.
Danny O’Brien’s filly is bidding to become the 40th filly in history to complete the Wakeful Stakes and VRC Oaks double when she lines up at Flemington on Thursday. The leading trainer achieved the feat in 2019 with Miami Bound, and he feels Getta Good Feeling has similar traits to his Classic-winning filly.
The VRC Oaks will be Getta Good Feeling’s second shot at Group One level. She had to settle for third place in the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield back in October. The daughter of So You Think finished a length behind the winner, but she was unfortunate, as she did not get a clear run in the race.
Expect to see Zahra sit just off the front of the field in the Oaks. His main priority will be to avoid traffic, and if he gets a clear passage in the final 400 metres, the pair will be tough to pass.
SECOND BEST BET: SURF’S UP
Red Roses Stakes (Race 7)
Chris Waller won the Red Roses Stakes in 2024 with Amelita. The Hall of Fame trainer has just one entry in the nominations this year with Surf’s Up. She broke her maiden at Warwick two starts back, and that victory has convinced her trainer to have a shot at the Red Roses Stakes.
The daughter of Flying Artie came very close to doubling her tally on her latest outing at Caulfield in the Thoroughbred Club of Australia Plate. Under the hands of Champion Jockey James McDonald, she went down just a neck behind Point Barrow. Those two fillies are likely to meet again in this race, and Waller’s runner can reverse the form with her rival.

Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Final (Race 6)
The ratings in the Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Final suggest Barbie’sdreamworld has something to find on many of her rivals in the field; however, she comes into this race bidding to complete a hat-trick following victories at Geelong and Hamilton, respectively.
Peter Chow’s mare is versatile on any ground type. She should relish the 1600 metres in this race and looks great value to record a third consecutive victory on the track.
