Race 1: Ladbrokes Hosted Pots Mdn Plate — 12:05, 2625m
I’m starting with the horse that looks like he’s been building towards a proper go at this trip: Zikron. The form line (2872) screams “honest stayer in the making”, and the Pateman yard don’t have a great Geelong win record on the numbers, but they do place enough to keep you in the game. The booking of Declan Bates is the awkward bit: he’s 0 from 13 at Geelong with only two placings, so you’re not getting a track angle there. Still, in a staying maiden, I want the horse that’s consistently turning up.
The danger is Charlie Messy Hair. He’s got more exposed form (2743-0), and with Stackhouse aboard you at least have a rider who knows Geelong well enough (22 rides here). From gate 6 he can land in a rhythm, and in these 2625m affairs, rhythm beats flair.
How I’d play it: Win bet Zikron. Small saver quinella with Charlie Messy Hair if you want cover in a low-confidence staying maiden.
Race 2: Tract 2yo Mdn Plate — 12:40, 1203m
The puzzle here is simple: who’s the real 2YO and who’s just filling a gate? I’m siding with the stable and rider combination that usually shows up with a plan: Novamira for C J Waller, with Jye McNeil aboard. Waller has eight runners at Geelong for three wins, which is proper evidence. McNeil’s Geelong record is solid too from 20 rides, and that matters when kids are learning their craft.
The main threat is the other yard I respect in juvenile maidens: Shah Jahan (Maher, Allen). He’s the only runner in this field with two starts and a form line (74), and John Allen’s Geelong sample is big enough to trust. If he’s learnt anything from those two runs, he can absolutely win this.
How I’d play it: Win bet Novamira. If the market makes Shah Jahan drift to a backable each-way price, I’d split stakes.
Race 3: Roderick Insurance Brokers Mdn Plate — 13:15, 1203m
This is the “stable move” race. Maher roll in with three runners across the day, and in this one they’ve got Saintly Dancer drawn to use the inside (gate 2). In a 2YO maiden, that’s a weapon. The rider Jabez Johnstone has only four Geelong rides, but he’s already knocked up a win and two placings here, so he rides the track fine. With Maher’s broader Geelong record (34 runners, 19 placings), you can see why the market will gravitate here.
The danger is Almontego who at least has race experience (form 4) and comes from a yard that places two out of three runners at this track in small samples. Gate 11 makes it harder, but if the speed is on and they run along, you can see him chiming in late while the fresh legs tire.
How I’d play it: Win bet Saintly Dancer. Keep it simple. If you’re hunting exotics, I’d rather a straight exacta with Almontego than spraying the whole field.
Race 4: Extreme Warrior At Rosemont Stud Mdn Plate — 13:50, 1312m
This is the best betting race on the card because we finally get a runner with a proper “maiden about to win” profile: Cinnamon Kiss. Her form reads 538-32, she draws to find a spot (gate 11 isn’t perfect but it’s manageable at Geelong), and she gets John Allen, who rides this circuit as well as anyone with a meaningful sample. The Dabernig yard have a strong Geelong footprint too, and they place often enough here that you don’t need a perfect map to trust the placement.
The horse I fear most is Royal Duck, the lightly raced type with a big “2” next to the name on debut. The Hawkes team win and place enough at Geelong to take them seriously, and L Currie hits the frame more than half the time here. Gate 9 gives her options: if she’s sharp early, she can roll and make it a sprint home.
Two notes that matter: Devoted To You has been to Geelong once and finished 10th, and Mystic Rapture has been here once and finished 8th. That doesn’t rule them out, but it stops you from romanticising “track experience” as an edge.
