Grafton Racing Tips 19 April 2026 — can Dunn run the table again?
Grafton Racing Tips 19 April 2026 — can Dunn run the table again?
M J Dunn turns up to Grafton and it rarely feels accidental. He has two live chances across the early races and his overall record here is the sort of thing you can actually bet off: 24 runners for 10 winners, and he hits the frame with just over seven in ten. That is not a one meeting spike, that is a habit.
So the big question for today is simple: do you lean into the stable that keeps landing punches at this track, or do you side with the one runner who has already proved he can win a race under pressure? These Grafton racing tips are written for speed: clear opinions, the key course angles that matter, and what I would do with my own stake.
We are on turf, and with most of these runners lightly exposed at the course, the meeting reads more like a placement and intent puzzle than a “track specialists” day. Two races make it a sharp little card, and both have a strong pace map story if you’re trying to work out who gets favours early.

Grafton — the setup
Surface: Turf
Going: Not provided in the race data, so treat early speed and barriers as extra important until the pattern shows.
Limited course form across today’s fields. Outside a handful of runners with a single prior visit to Grafton, most of the confidence has to come from stable intent, barrier usage, and who is likely to control the first 600 metres.

One hard edge you can still use at this track, because the sample is real: the people. A Mallyon has ridden Grafton as well as anyone on this card, and Dunn’s stable returns strike when it comes here.

Race-by-race tips
Race 1: Davis Steel & Fabrication Hcp — 12:53, 1094m
The market will have to decide whether to trust the only runner who has already done it, and I’m happy to side with that. Vantorix comes in off a win (form: 1-) and from gate 1 he gets to write his own story early. In these 2yo dashes at a country track, that matters: clean air, no excuses, and you can make the others earn their stripes around you.
There is a small caution flag in the background: the 90 day stats query doesn’t return any recent runs for him, so I’m treating the racecard itself as the anchor. Still, the setup is right. L P Rolls rides the track well enough to keep out of trouble, and barrier 1 over 1094m is the kind of advantage that turns “promising” into “wins again”.
The danger is the Dunn pair, because the stable just keeps landing at Grafton. Naystar (gate 3, Jett Newman) looks the one most likely to use that inside draw to sit right on Vantorix and ask the question late. Newman wins about one in five rides here and is around the placings more often than not, which is a decent edge in a race full of unknowns.
Staking: Win bet Vantorix. Small saver quinella with Naystar if you want protection against the Dunn factor.
Race 2: Fusion Tiling & Waterproofing Country Boosted Mdn Plate — 13:33, 1203m
Here’s the puzzle: do you take the runner with the soft draw who looks ready to step forward, or do you trust the stable and jockey combo that has repeatedly bullied this track? I’m leaning to the stable angle. Poetic Angel is the Dunn runner I want onside. She comes in off a placing (form: 3-) and gets A Mallyon, who is the standout rider on this meeting by a long margin at Grafton: 23 rides for 9 wins and he hits the frame almost seven times in ten. That is the kind of local edge that turns a “nice chance” into a bet.
Barrier 8 isn’t ideal, but over 1203m at Grafton it’s not a death sentence if Mallyon gets rolling early and finds the lane he wants. This is also a race where a few of the likely hopes don’t bring a lot of exposed upside in the data we have, so I’m comfortable siding with intent and proven track execution.
The main danger is Sneaky Bid from gate 1. The draw gives him first crack at the economical run and he’s already had a look at Grafton. It wasn’t a placing (finished 4th on his only course run), but that’s still a valuable experience edge in a maiden. If they overdo it up front and Mallyon gets forced wide, the inside run can flip the result.
Staking: Win bet Poetic Angel. Exacta Poetic Angel over Sneaky Bid as the saver play if you like building a little insurance around the inside gate.

The plays
NAP: Poetic Angel (Race 2, 13:33). You are buying two things that consistently matter at this track: Dunn’s strike with his Grafton team (10 wins from 24 runners) and Mallyon’s ability to put horses in the right spot here (9 wins from 23 rides).
Value: Naystar (Race 1, 12:53) as a saver line around your main bet. You are not betting a “specialist”, you are betting a stable that keeps firing at Grafton, plus a low draw that creates options.
Banker for multis: Vantorix (Race 1, 12:53). In a juvenile race full of first starters, the horse with a recent win and barrier 1 is the simplest building block on the card.
Each-way angle: If you are playing places only, I’d rather lean to the rider than guess upside. Mallyon on Poetic Angel is the “hits the frame” shape of the day.
Course angle to remember: Dunn and Mallyon are the Grafton combo you check first every time they show up, even when the horse profile looks plain on paper.

There’s a little course experience sprinkled through the fields: Sneaky Bid has run once here (finished 4th), Our Smooth Nik has had one course run (finished 9th), and Dellucy has also had one visit (finished 4th).
