Lots Of Torque looks like the sort of maiden that wins one of these by simply turning up and doing what he’s been threatening to do for a while. When a horse does that without putting its head on the photo, the next step is usually a race where the speed is only moderate and the winner is the one who holds a position and refuses to fold.
The gate isn’t perfect (6), but it’s workable in a 1203m maiden, and Melissa Julius can keep him out of trouble and let him build. He’s also been to Naracoorte once and placed. One run here isn’t a “track horse”, but it’s still a nice tick because plenty of these haven’t handled the place at all.
The danger for me is Blazing Red from gate 2 with Todd Pannell. That inside draw gives him first crack at the soft run, and Pannell is one of the few riders on the card who can make a small edge feel like a big one. If Blazing Red controls the first half and pinches cheap sectionals, the race can turn into a sprint from the bend and the stalkers have to be sharp.

Etched In Blue is the obvious danger. The 8-7723 profile says he’s right on the edge, and Campbell Rawiller jumps on, which I respect at this track. If Rawiller can slot him into the first half without burning petrol from gate 9, he’s the one most likely to make Shamastar earn it late.
Staking: Each-way Shamastar if you get a price that respects the risk. If the market crushes him, I’d rather play quinellas with Etched In Blue and keep it sensible.
Race 3: Tdc Hcp (54) — 13:30, 1203m
The market often gets these low-grade 1200m handicaps wrong because it overweights one shiny win and underweights the map. I’m siding with Nankeen to run the race from the right spot from barrier 1.
Gate 1 matters here because a lot of these want to be midfield and working. Nankeen can hold the paint, let the speed sort itself out, and punch through when the swoopers have to go wide. The form is mixed (534-95), but the class suits, and the set weight of 128.9 is manageable when you’re not doing early work.
Melissa Kate is the horse I’m most wary of. Her recent form line includes a win two starts back and she’s been around long enough to know her job. She’s drawn 11, which forces a decision: snag and rely on luck, or go forward and risk being caught wide. If she gets cover, she’s absolutely good enough to swamp them.
Staking: Win bet Nankeen. If you want insurance, save on Melissa Kate rather than trying to get cute with the rest of the field.
Race 4: Pphs (Bm58) — 14:05, 1564m
This is the best betting race of the meeting because there’s a strong form horse, a clear tactical angle, and a rider booking that looks like intent rather than convenience. I’m with Ironbar.
He comes in off a last-start win (665301), and that’s not the whole story. What I like is that he now gets Connor Murtagh, and while Murtagh’s Naracoorte record is more “competitive” than “dominant” (seven rides for one win), he tends to be in the right part of the track, and he’s drawn 9 where he can assess the tempo and slot in with cover. Ironbar also has the profile of a horse that can absorb a bit of pressure and still finish, which is what you want in a BM58 when the speed can come from a few angles.
The obvious query is the weight: 134.4 is a proper anchor. If he has to do work from the 1000m, it can blunt him. That’s why the first 400m matters. If Murtagh can find cover and make it a last 600m race, Ironbar can win again.
Aquaholic is the danger. The form line (2-42284) says he’s been around the money often enough to make you nervous, and Rochelle Milnes can give him a clean stalking run from gate 5. If Ironbar gets posted and Aquaholic gets the soft trail, the weights can flip the result.
