Overview
Chef Militaire arrives at Port Lincoln on the back of two straight wins, with two wins and four top-three finishes from five starts at this track. Nobody on Sunday’s card has a stronger course record, and it puts the Dempseys Feed Supplies (Bm68) at 4:50PM at the centre of the day.
Chef Militaire is not the only reason to pay attention. Tala Hutchinson has a ride in all eight races and hits the frame here at a higher rate than any other jockey on the card, while the Dunn and Bishop stable has runners in every race. These Port Lincoln racing tips cover all eight races, from the 1,350m maiden at 1:20PM through to the 1,000m Bm68 at 5:20PM, on a track rated Good. You will get a clear pick in each race, the main danger, a staking line, and a short list of the bets we would actually place.
Reading the Port Lincoln card
Port Lincoln is a country track where the same names come back again and again, so there is more course form here than you usually get at a Sunday meeting. Twenty-five of today’s entries have five or more starts at the track, and the best of them are worth knowing before you look at any race.
| Horse | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chef Militaire | 5 | 2 | 4 | 40.0 | 80.0 |
| I Need A Drink | 5 | 1 | 4 | 20.0 | 80.0 |
| Alfano | 6 | 0 | 4 | 0.0 | 66.7 |
| Toorak Blaze | 5 | 1 | 3 | 20.0 | 60.0 |
| Vasilias | 5 | 1 | 3 | 20.0 | 60.0 |
| Equine Headline | 5 | 0 | 3 | 0.0 | 60.0 |
| Lava Lad | 6 | 0 | 3 | 0.0 | 50.0 |
| Oriedos | 7 | 0 | 3 | 0.0 | 42.9 |
The riding table is where Port Lincoln gets interesting. Tala Hutchinson has won on seven of 28 rides here and placed on 17 of them. Rochelle Milnes has ridden twice as many and wins on roughly one in six. Brooke King gets plenty of rides but has turned only three into wins.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tala Hutchinson | 28 | 7 | 17 | 25.0 | 60.7 |
| Rochelle Milnes | 56 | 10 | 27 | 17.9 | 48.2 |
| Brooke King | 51 | 3 | 21 | 5.9 | 41.2 |
| Jemma Gutte | 8 | 1 | 3 | 12.5 | 37.5 |
| Alysha Warren | 23 | 1 | 7 | 4.3 | 30.4 |
| MS S Metcalfe | 33 | 4 | 10 | 12.1 | 30.3 |
| Caitlin Tootell | 35 | 3 | 10 | 8.6 | 28.6 |
| Connor Murtagh | 36 | 4 | 9 | 11.1 | 25.0 |
Among the trainers, Garret Lynch has the strongest numbers but only one runner. Dunn and Bishop bring the volume: 192 runners at the track for 15 winners, so a lot of their horses are here to fill fields rather than win.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garret Lynch | 26 | 7 | 13 | 26.9 | 50.0 |
| Christopher Harrison | 12 | 1 | 5 | 8.3 | 41.7 |
| MS S Williams | 22 | 5 | 8 | 22.7 | 36.4 |
| Byron J Cozamanis | 33 | 2 | 11 | 6.1 | 33.3 |

Port Lincoln predictions, race by race
Race 1: Sportsbet Mdn Plate, 1:20PM, 1,350m
Maidens at this level are usually decided by whoever has shown the most, and Fullheadofsteam has shown more than most. The form line of 043643 shows a maiden who keeps getting into the finish without quite getting there, and Fullheadofsteam placed on the only previous visit to Port Lincoln. Three runs in the last 90 days, for one placing, means fitness is not a question.
The rider swings it. Tala Hutchinson is the best jockey on the card by strike rate, and gets a horse who just needs a clean run from barrier 8.
Social Dancer is the danger, with two placings from four goes here and a fifth last time. If Fullheadofsteam over-races early, Social Dancer is the one who picks up the pieces. Small win bet on Fullheadofsteam.
Race 2: Lincoln Estate Mdn Plate, 1:55PM, 1,000m
Does Fomenter improve again at a third start? Fourth, then third, and those two runs in the last 90 days make Fomenter the most progressive horse in a field full of exposed maidens. The 1,000m trip should suit a maiden still on the way up.
The negative is the stable. Simon Drewitt has had 15 runners at Port Lincoln without a winner or a placing, and barrier 15 means Alyssa Webb has work to do from the start.
Go Ask Alice is the one to beat. That runner placed on the only previous start here, and Rochelle Milnes rides. Hard to be confident in either, so keep the stake light: Fomenter win, with Go Ask Alice as a saver.
Race 3: Port Lincoln Hotel (Bm64), 2:30PM, 1,210m
Talent Scout will be popular after winning last start, and the profile is solid: one win from four starts here, plus a win from two runs in the last 90 days. But the topweight now carries 60.5kg, and rider D Caboche has had 29 rides at Port Lincoln without a winner. That is a lot to overcome in a Bm64.
Only One Ruler goes the other way. The three-year-old won at the only previous start, and did it at this track. Only One Ruler carries 54kg, a 6.5kg pull on Talent Scout, and draws barrier 6 with Caitlyn Munro riding for Dunn and Bishop. A lightly raced horse with an unbeaten record against older, exposed handicappers is the kind of runner who can keep improving.
Chesteray is another last-start winner worth respecting, with one win from three starts here, from the MS S Williams stable, which wins with almost a quarter of its runners at the track.
The one we want on the side is The Last Dance. The 771554 form line is not exciting, but Tala Hutchinson and trainer Garret Lynch have teamed up 12 times at Port Lincoln for five wins and eight top-three finishes. When this pair books a ride here, it is usually for a reason.
Only One Ruler to win, The Last Dance each-way.
Race 4: Book Your Xmas Function At Plrc Hcp (54), 3:05PM, 1,210m
Two horses who keep placing here and never win: Equine Headline and Alfano. Equine Headline has three placings from five Port Lincoln starts. Alfano has four from six. Neither has won at the track, and that is the honest summary of this race.
We lean to Equine Headline because the latest run was better: second at the only start in the last 90 days, and the 3-70232 form line is trending the right way. Connor Murtagh rides from barrier 3, a good draw over 1,210m.
Alfano‘s fourth last time was solid enough, and with Rochelle Milnes riding, expect another bold run. Survey Lane, at 10, carries top weight and has won once from five starts here, but a ninth last time does not suggest 60kg is manageable.
Equine Headline each-way. Not a race to bet big on.
Race 5: Vale Peter Dearman Hcp (54), 3:40PM, 1,210m
Minato has been to Port Lincoln twice for a win and a second, and that course record does a lot of the work here. The latest run was a third, the only start in the last 90 days, and Rochelle Milnes rides for Dunn and Bishop. Minato carries 58kg from barrier 9.
The rest of the field has questions. Strawberry Swing has won once from five starts here but finished ninth last time. Kublai comes off a break, and Retrospection has two unplaced runs since one.
Champagne Effort is the danger: second at the only start in the last 90 days, and in with 55.5kg. If Minato struggles to find room, this is the one that benefits. Minato to win and as the multi leg.
Race 6: Eyre Car Centre Hcp (56), 4:10PM, 1,350m
Utah ran second at this track on 4 October under Rochelle Milnes, and the same rider is back on. That was Utah‘s only Port Lincoln start, and the 259-02 form line shows a horse finding form since a break. With 59kg and barrier 5, Milnes should be able to settle just off the speed.
Toorak Blaze is the danger. One win and three placings from five starts here is a better course record than most of this field can offer. Toorak Blaze finished fifth last time and shares top weight at 60kg.
Eire To The Jungle has won once from four starts in the last 90 days and jumps from barrier 1, but also carries 60kg. Or Am I has been busy, racing seven times in that period for one win.
Utah to win, with a saver on Toorak Blaze.
Race 7: Dempseys Feed Supplies (Bm68), 4:50PM, 1,350m
The best bet of the day. Chef Militaire has won the last two, and the 324411 form line shows a horse who has found a new level: two wins from three starts in the last 90 days, plus two wins and four top-three finishes from five starts at Port Lincoln. No other horse on the card has a course record like that.
Trainer Ryan Dawson has had only one runner at Port Lincoln, and it won. That is a small sample, but it means the stable is not just turning up for a run.
Barrier 13 is the concern. Over 1,350m the choice is to push forward early or settle back and rely on a strong finish. The 58kg is fair for a horse in this form.
Stolen Kiss is the danger. One win and two placings from four runs in the last 90 days, and Connor Murtagh rides for MS Jessica Tzaferis. Divine Fire has a similar record, one win from three runs in that period, and finished second last time. I Need A Drink has placed in four of five starts here but has finished sixth last time.
Back Chef Militaire to win, and use the horse as the multi anchor.
Race 8: Kemp Real Estate (Bm68), 5:20PM, 1,000m
Another Bride won last start, and Tala Hutchinson rides. One win and two placings from three starts here, only 54kg, and a win at the only start in the last 90 days. Barrier 11 over 1,000m is not ideal, but the light weight should help hold a position.
Our Divinyl is the horse the market could underrate: two wins from three starts in the last 90 days, including the latest, and the 527191 form line shows the best racing is recent. The problem is barrier 16, the widest gate in a 1,000m sprint. Find cover early and Our Divinyl can win.
Sassy For Sure won last start, and won the only previous start here. Vasilias has one win and three placings from five Port Lincoln starts and will run well again.
Another Bride to win, with a small value bet on Our Divinyl.

Where the money goes
NAP: Chef Militaire (Race 7, 4:50PM). Two straight wins, and two wins from five starts at Port Lincoln. Barrier 13 is the only real question.
Value: Our Divinyl (Race 8, 5:20PM). Two wins from three starts in the last 90 days, but the wide draw could push the price out. A drift is the time to bet.
Banker: Minato (Race 5, 3:40PM). A win and a second from two visits here, with Rochelle Milnes aboard. The steadiest leg for a multi.
Each-way: The Last Dance (Race 3, 2:30PM). The form does not say much, but the Hutchinson and Lynch partnership says a lot.
Course angle: Tala Hutchinson. Six of every ten Hutchinson rides at Port Lincoln finish in the first three, and today’s book includes Another Bride and The Last Dance. A Hutchinson ride on a horse with form deserves respect.
These are our Port Lincoln racing tips for Sunday. If Hutchinson keeps landing rides like Another Bride, the first thing to check at every Port Lincoln meeting will be the Hutchinson book.
