Randwick Racing Tips 25 July — can Waller own the early quaddie?
Randwick, and the one yardstick that matters
If you want a simple way to frame this Randwick meeting, it’s this: when Chris Waller loads the truck, you either find a reason to beat him or you accept you’re playing for value around him. He’s not a two runner cameo act here either. Over a big sample at this track, Waller has sent out 269 runners for 39 wins and 118 placings at Randwick. That’s the sort of volume where you can actually trust the story it tells.
And that story shapes this card. The opener is a 2yo handicap with Waller firing multiple bullets, the staying Highway Plate looks like it has a progressive horse with momentum, and the Midway is the kind of Randwick puzzle where barrier and tempo decide whether you look smart or silly.

Race-by-race
Race 1: Marcellin College Randwick Hcp — 11:20, 1203m
Letters Patent looks the right anchor to start the day. The map helps, the stable helps, and the jockey booking is the clearest tell on the page. James McDonald rides Randwick as well as anyone, and he does it off a real base here: 21 wins and 42 placings from 89 rides. In a 2yo handicap, that matters because these races often turn into position and decision making problems rather than a pure talent test.
Letters Patent’s form line (3-1) reads like a youngster who’s worked out the job quickly. Barrier 2 gives McDonald options: hold a spot if there’s speed, or slide into the running line if they overdo it early. I also like that Waller has more than one in the race, because it tends to mean the stable rate the race as worth targeting.
The danger is Scintillation (gate 4). The 1-3 profile is exactly what you want in this sort of event, and the draw keeps it out of trouble. If Scintillation lands one out one back and gets the first crack at them, it can absolutely spoil the party.
Others I’d keep onside for multiples: Suasion (gate 1, last start winner) and Half Pipe (6-1, gets in light at 120.1). Wide alleys make life harder for a couple I respect, including Threads (17) and Write Me A Letter (18), unless the race shape turns messy.
Staking: Win bet Letters Patent. Small saver quinella with Scintillation if you want coverage.
Race 2: Tab Highway Plate (C3) — 11:55, 1969m
Here’s the question: do you want to be with the progressive horse, or the one who keeps turning up and running well without winning? I’m siding with momentum and upside, which points straight to Leovanni.
His recent 90 day profile reads like a horse that’s found the right grade: five runs for two wins, four placings, and an average finish around second. That’s not a “lucky patch”, it’s a pattern of turning up and doing the job. He’s also won on his only Randwick start, which is a nice tick without pretending it’s a trend.
Barrier 11 isn’t perfect at this trip, but it’s workable if Collett can slide in and get cover early. And I’m happy to forgive a slightly awkward alley when the horse brings current form and the race doesn’t look packed with stayers who will punish any mistake.
The main danger is Maples, chasing four straight (form 111). You don’t win three in a row by accident, and the lighter weight (119.0) gives the rider options. If Maples controls the speed or gets the right trail, it can run straight past them again.
Moon Sweeper is the other one you can’t dismiss, even from gate 15. The form (532212) screams consistency and he placed on his only Randwick run. If the tempo is solid and they come back to him late, he’s in it up to his ears.
Staking: Leovanni each-way. If you’re playing safe, save on Maples to win.

Race 3: Stand With Jai Midway (Bm72) — 12:30, 1750m
The market won’t help much without odds in the feed, so I’m reading this through race shape and which runners are actually trending the right way. Brazil appeals as the horse peaking at the right time, and the profile says he knows how to win races.
In the last 90 days, he’s only had one run and he won it. That’s a tiny sample, so I’m not dressing it up as anything more than a sign he’s in good nick right now. The bigger driver is his overall recent form line (051201): when he puts it together, he goes right through the line. Tommy Berry from gate 9 should be able to find a midfield lane with cover, and from 1750m at Randwick that’s usually the sweet spot if the leaders keep rolling.
The horse I’m most wary of is Free And Fast (6-40111). Three straight wins is hard to argue with, and even if he sits a touch wider from gate 11, confidence can carry a horse through awkward runs. If he gets the right tow into it, he can absolutely make it four.
For the trifecta players, The Stars Align (form 751141) looks the reliable grinder, and Rose Water brings a two win streak into this from a kinder gate (5). I’m also keeping an eye on Murphilly. He’s placed on his only Randwick start and his form (3-41413) says he’ll be there when it counts if he gets a run at them.
Staking: Win bet Brazil. If you hate the uncertainty, make it a saver only race and watch how the track plays.
Where the money goes
I’m not pretending this is a deep card with eight betting races. It’s a short meeting in the data we’ve got, and that’s fine. The best play is to lean into the strongest signals and stay disciplined where the noise is loudest.
NAP: Letters Patent (Race 1, 11:20). Gate 2, McDonald aboard, and a 3-1 profile that suggests the penny has dropped. In 2yo races at Randwick, that combination of draw and decision making wins plenty of arguments.
Value: Leovanni (Race 2, 11:55) each-way. The last 90 days reads like a horse that keeps putting money in the bank, and he’s already won on his only Randwick start.
Banker for multis: Letters Patent. Keep it simple, keep it early.
Each-way angle: Leovanni again. Five runs this recent stretch for four top-three finishes is the kind of reliability you can bet around.
Course angle to remember: Waller’s Randwick volume is enormous, and it keeps holding. When he turns up with multiple runners in a race, it’s rarely for sightseeing.
