There’s a simple question sitting over this Randwick midweek: do you take on Chris Waller early, or do you accept the obvious and move on with your day?
Race 1 is a maiden handicap full of “almost” horses, and Waller turns up with three of them, including a Rawiller ride that screams intent. Race 3 is another 2 to 3yo puzzle where he’s involved again, and when you’re trying to beat a stable that’s had 275 runners at Randwick for 39 wins and 121 placings, you want a good reason, not just the urge to be clever.
Below are my Randwick racing tips for Wednesday, 29 July 2026. Three races on turf, and I’ll keep it practical: who I’m backing, who can beat them, and where I’m happy to sit out.
Randwick — the setup
Most of the horses on this card don’t have deep Randwick history, so don’t go hunting “track specialists” where none exist. A couple do have emerging patterns: Artgirl has visited three times for two placings, and Claudel has placed on her only Randwick start. That’s useful context, but it’s not a lifestyle.
The rider angle is clearer. J B McDonald wins about one in four rides here and hits the frame almost half the time, and N Rawiller has a similar placing profile at Randwick from serious volume. If you want one simple way to trim your decision making on a Wednesday, start there.

Race-by-race
Race 1: Robrick Lodge Mdn Hcp — 12:50, 1695m
Claudel looks like the sort of maiden you can back without needing to invent a story. She’s been there four times in a row and run second every time (2222), and the Rawiller booking for Waller is exactly what you want when you’re trying to land a maiden handicap at Randwick from gate 4. She’s also already handled the track, placing on her only start here, so you’re not guessing about whether Randwick finds her out.
The other Waller pair matter for the map. Artgirl</strong has the more exposed profile (323822) and draws 3, which gives McDonald options to hold a spot and control his own luck. She’s been to Randwick three times for two placings, so she’s not turning up cold. Phantom Major</strong is the wild card: form line is short (2) and he’s drawn 7, so he’ll need to be ridden with a bit more patience than the inside runners.
The one who can make this messy is Crown Of Fire from barrier 1. If Maher’s two year old holds a prominent spot and the race turns into a sit sprint, your “honest” maidens can get left flat footed when it matters.

Race 2: Nutrien Ag Solutions (Bm72) — 13:25, 2625m
This is the sort of staying benchmark where the handicapper has a crack, and you’ve got to decide if you want class and momentum, or light weight and luck.
I’m with Elle Hudson because she brings the clearest “right now” profile: her recent form reads 972741 and she’s coming off a win. Over the past year-plus window she’s gone five starts for one win and three placings, which is a healthy strike for this grade, and she draws barrier 2 so Clipperton can keep her out of trouble in a race where position often matters more than brilliance. Pride’s runners tend to turn up ready, and this looks like a placement to collect, not a sightseeing tour.
The danger is Spacetime Legend</strong (draw 3). He’s been winning and placing in patches (221125) and if he gets a soft time within striking distance, he can outsprint a few of these late. If you’re looking for a knockout at a price, My Greek God</strong gets the inside (barrier 1) and a light weight, and in staying races that can be the difference between seeing daylight and seeing heels.

Race 3: Inglis Xtra Bonus Mdn Plate — 14:00, 1203m
The market usually gets seduced by debutants in these, but the race shape here says you want something that can hold a spot from an awkward gate and still finish. That’s why I lean to Isawyou.
He’s already shown enough to run second on debut, and while the form line is only one start, that’s still more information than most of these. The knock is barrier 14, but Collett’s ridden plenty of Randwick races and he’ll know the drill: don’t panic early, find a lane, and give the horse a chance to build. If Isawyou is even slightly above average, that debut placing often turns into a win quickly in this grade.
Waller brings the usual intrigue. Steel Will</strong (37) with Tommy Berry is the obvious danger because he’s already mixed it in stronger maiden company, and Waller’s Randwick record is big stable, big volume, reliable returns. Amazone</strong hasn’t fired yet (96) but McDonald jumping on tells you they haven’t given up, and barrier 6 is a far kinder starting point than the wide-drawn favourite.
I’ll also mention Eviction Notice from gate 5. Waterhouse and Bott don’t mind making their own luck, and if this becomes the one time today we get a genuinely quick early clip, the horse that’s fit and tough can pinch it.
Staking: Each-way Isawyou</strong (wide gate, so take the insurance). Saver win on Steel Will</strong if you want to lean into the Waller platform.
The plays
NAP: Claudel (Race 1, 12:50). Four straight seconds tells you she’s at the right level, and the Rawiller ride from gate 4 is the sort of push-button setup you want in a maiden handicap.
Value: Isawyou each-way (Race 3, 14:00). The wide draw will scare plenty off, but he’s one of the few with proven ability in a race full of unknowns.
Banker for multis: Elle Hudson (Race 2, 13:25). She comes off a win, maps sweet from barrier 2, and her overall recent strike rate suggests she holds her form.
Each-way anchor: If you don’t like the gate, switch the each-way play in Race 3 to Steel Will. Two runs in the book (37) and a kinder draw than the favourite gives you a clean, low-stress ticket.
Course angle to keep: When Randwick fields are thin on horse course history, I’m happy to let the riders do the filtering. McDonald’s record here stays elite, and Rawiller keeps landing in the money at a ridiculous clip for 90-plus rides.
