This is a market-problem type of maiden because two of them are completely new to the caper, and the older brigade have had their chances. I would rather back upside than history. Inside Word is the 2yo from the Corstens and Larkin camp with Lachlan King on, and the booking reads like intent rather than a throwaway.
If you want something you have seen before, Excelaot has been around the mark in this grade (7-3545) and won’t need the picnic. But as a five-year-old maiden, he is more a place horse than a proper win bet unless the youngsters fail to measure up.
Staking: Watch race unless the debutants are a fair price. If betting, small each-way Inside Word on the stable intent angle.
Race 3: Ultima Hotel Mdn Plate — 14:00, 1422m
The shape says pressure. There are a stack of runners drawn wide who will not want to be snagged, and that often turns this 1422m start into a race where position early is gold. Blackhill Boy (gate 1) looks the one most likely to get that economical run. He has been knocking on the door (664-64) and he does not need to improve much to win a maiden like this.
Apache Sunrise is the danger and you can make the case he deserves to win one soon (5-03233). The issue is barrier 13. If he works across and sits outside the lead, he can still win, but Swan Hill can punish those long, sustained wide runs when they start at the 600m.

Race 4: Footts Swan Hill Demolition Group Mdn Plate — 14:30, 1750m
I am starting with the contender because this one looks like a proper bet. Wazza (gate 3) ran second on debut and that is usually the right platform for a quick maiden win, especially at 1750m where many of these are still learning how to breathe late. John Allen sticks, and he tends to ride this track with patience rather than panic.
Only Opera (gate 1) is the danger because she has already shown enough in two runs (63) to suggest she will be finishing, and the inside draw gives Neil Farley options. The risk with her is tactical: if they crawl mid-race, she can be left needing luck in traffic.
Determinato brings more exposed form (3-33828) and can feature, but I prefer the freshness and the low-draw run of Wazza.

This is the contrast race: one horse is in the right form, another is in the right stable, and the trip sorts out who is serious. Nottolook (Patrick Payne, Farley) comes off a 6 and a 1 in his last two, and over the last 90 days he has gone 2 runs for 1 win. That is not a fluke profile, that is a horse who has found his lane.
Smokin’ Rohie is the danger and she is the one I would be frightened of if the leaders overdo it. Her form string (273322) screams consistency, and she has gone 5 runs in the last 90 days for 2 wins and 4 placings. If she gets clear air from the 600m, she will keep coming.
Big picture: I trust Payne in these staying handicaps because he places them to win, but you still need the race run to suit. If the tempo turns messy, Smokin’ Rohie is the one with the strongest late pattern.

Over the last 90 days he is 2 from 2 with a win and two placings, which tells you he is racing in the right headspace.
Monix is the danger and she is no ordinary danger. She has won on both Swan Hill visits, and she is in ripping overall shape too with 5 runs in the last 90 days for 2 wins and 4 placings. The only knock is gate 9: she will need to slide in without spending too much, or be good enough to win with cover from midfield.
Morning Ralph (5231) can measure up, but I prefer the inside control Set Me Loose should get.

Here is where I am prepared to be firm. National Code has the right preparation for this: he is holding form (13-022) and he has gone 3 runs in the last 90 days for two placings. The Hayes stable loves this track, and W Gordon is a genuine Swan Hill rider with 27 rides here for 4 wins and 12 placings. That combination is a meeting-winning pattern when the horse is fit and honest.
Fierce Dreams is the danger because his form line is simply better than most of these (322161). He is a last-start winner and B Rawiller takes the ride, and Rawiller wins nearly a third of his Swan Hill rides. The query is the gate (13). If he has to do too much work to get across, he can be vulnerable late.
Bonfire Jimmy (gate 1) can give you a sight if the leaders control it, and he maps sweet.

Angelos (gate 3) draws to get the run of the race, and Noblet placing him here suggests they are looking for a confidence-building result rather than another slog in stronger grade.
Call Me Maura is the danger and she is the value lens horse. Her recent record is sharp (3 runs in the last 90 days for 4 placings across those starts is the theme), and she has placed on her only Swan Hill start. The downside is gate 20. She will need luck, and you cannot bet big from there unless you are happy living dangerously.
For the punter who wants one last swing with a safer map, Aka Daka (gate 1) can sneak into the minors.
