M J Williams has three runners in the BM62 (Bellonado, Epoch, Star Of Rossa). Vintell jumps off the page as the horse with the least explaining to do. Third on debut and drawn gate 1, Lachlan King gets every chance to hold a spot and not turn it into a wide-running, stop-start maiden that burns the best horse.
Plenty of these have either messy form lines or awkward starting points. Don’t Say No Mikki has the most exposed profile with a form line of 374-36 and that can be tempting in a maiden, but barrier 17 makes the ride a problem before you’ve even talked about improvement. Ottalaus brings a couple of runs (6-47) but also has to overcome gate 15, and over 1200 around Warrnambool that often means spending petrol early just to be in the race.
The danger I’d keep very close is Empress Rossa (gate 5) with Declan Bates aboard. Bates rides this track well enough that if she has any talent at all, you’ll see it in the first 200 metres when he puts her in the right lane and keeps her out of trouble.

This is the clearest form race on the card and I’m happy to be firm: Always Free should win. She’s gone 233, she gets a workable gate 8, and Declan Bates is the type of rider who will keep her out of the nonsense, build into it, and make it a staying test from the 800 if that’s what it takes.
The map looks kind, too. There isn’t a stack of obvious pace in here, and that helps a horse with consistency because you’re less likely to get the race blown apart by something that won’t be there at the 300. If it turns into a sit-and-sprint, Bates can still pinch runs on the fence or outside depending on how the track plays.
The one that can beat her is Janey Bopper (gate 1). She’s been around the mark in this grade and that inside alley over 2187 metres gives Neil Farley the option to either hold a position or let the race come to him and save ground. If Always Free gets posted three deep with cover at any stage, Janey Bopper becomes the one that punishes it late.

Race 4: Coastal Wholesalers (Bm62) — 14:30, 2187m
The market usually latches onto last start winners in these country benchmarks, but this is a race where the map and the weight pull me to the same horse: Epoch.
His form 344141 is the profile of a horse that knows how to put himself in the race, and he draws gate 3 which is ideal over 2187 metres. D Yendall isn’t the highest strike-rate rider here, but he places plenty at Warrnambool and he rides this circuit like someone who understands when to go early and when to wait. If Epoch lands one-one or leaders back with cover, I want to be on the horse that can sustain a run rather than the one that needs everything to fall apart.
Darwinian is the danger. He’s a three-year-old coming off a win (form 4081) and Teodore Nugent will probably try to stay out of traffic from gate 7. If he gets into a rhythm and improves again, that’s the horse with upside.
