Wangaratta Racing Tips 26 Oct 2026: Payne and Egan Again?

Overview

Trainer Patrick Payne and jockey W Egan have teamed up six times at Wangaratta and won three of them, and on Monday Egan rides five Payne runners across the card. That partnership is the thread running through a nine-race program that otherwise leans hard on maidens and Benchmark 56 handicaps, the kind of day where one stable’s intent is worth more than a dozen thin form lines.

These Wangaratta racing tips cover all nine races on a Good track, from the opening maiden at 1:00PM to the last of four Benchmark 56 races at 5:00PM. The first five are maidens, so expect plenty of horses with one or two starts behind them. The back half is where the sharper betting sits: The Quiet Immortal has placed every time he has raced in the last three months, King Kauffo comes off a win and two seconds, and the 5:00PM sprint has a last-start winner, a debut winner and a course placegetter all chasing the same prize. Prices were open for the first five races when this was written and are quoted where we have them. Markets for Races 6 to 9 hadn’t opened.

Reading the Wangaratta card

Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two starts here at most, and only Densetsu (placed in two of three), Raven’s Silver (one win from four) and Brilliant Bull Ant (unplaced in three) have three or more Wangaratta runs. The real depth is in the riders and stables, and two names stand out: Egan wins a third of the time here, and T & C McEvoy have won with half of their six Wangaratta runners.

Jockeys at Wangaratta (5+ rides, sorted by place rate)

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
W Egan 9 3 6 33.33 66.67
Patrick Moloney 8 0 5 0.00 62.50
J Duffy 38 5 22 13.16 57.89
Dylan Dunn 13 2 5 15.38 38.46
M Aitken 25 2 9 8.00 36.00
Lachlan King 42 3 15 7.14 35.71
Logan Mcneil 17 2 6 11.76 35.29

Trainers at Wangaratta (5+ runners, sorted by place rate)

Trainer Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
T & C Mcevoy 6 3 4 50.00 66.67
Jason Warren 6 2 4 33.33 66.67
Patrick Payne 13 4 7 30.77 53.85
Ben, Will & JD Hayes 13 0 6 0.00 46.15
Ben Brisbourne 69 8 27 11.59 39.13
Craig Weeding 18 4 7 22.22 38.89
Andrew Dale 42 3 13 7.14 30.95

Ben Brisbourne is the volume stable here by a distance, 69 runners for eight wins, and he has a runner in most races today. Patrick Moloney’s line is worth a second look: five placings from eight rides but no win yet, so treat his mounts as place chances until that changes.

Wangaratta race by race

Race 1: Master King Security Mdn Plate, 1:00PM, 1203m

Blue Parrot has gone seventh, fifth, fourth and third in four starts. That is the slow, steady climb of a horse working out what racing is about, and the next step on that ladder is a win. Damien Thornton sits on him from barrier 3, a gate that lets him take a spot without burning fuel, and at $5.75 with Bet Right he is the one in the top half of the market with a proper form line.

Brookelinda heads the market at $3.70 after running eighth on her only start, which is a lot of faith in a trial-and-error profile. The bigger danger is Kinky Mistress. She was fourth on debut, Payne trains her and Egan rides, and that combination is the strongest on the course. If she has improved the way Payne’s runners usually do second up, she wins.

Win bet on Blue Parrot, with a small saver on Kinky Mistress.

Race 2: Wangaratta Bearings & Industrial Supplies Mdn Plate, 1:30PM, 1203m

How many times can a horse run second before it wins? Ravens Glow has placed in three of her four starts, including a second at her last run and a placing on her only visit to Wangaratta. She is a Brisbourne runner with Moloney aboard, and both of them place far more often than they win here, which fits a filly who keeps knocking on the door. At $4.20 with Bet Right she is a fair price for the most consistent maiden in the race.

Prolific Angel ($4.80) ran fifth on debut for the Freedmans and is the obvious improver. The quiet one is Estival. Her last three runs read third, third, second, and she is $26. The knock is her rider’s Wangaratta record, no wins from 36 rides, but at that price she belongs in the exotics.

Ravens Glow to win. Estival each-way for the price.

Race 3: Mason Park Funerals Mdn Plate, 2:00PM, 1422m

The scratchings have done Rock About a favour. Samaka, who had run second or third in all four starts, is out, and that removes the one horse in the race with a better placing record. Rock About has run twice in the last three months for a second and a third, and nothing else left in the field has placed in both of its last two runs. $3.50 with Bet Right is short but fair.

Move It ($5) is a debutant from the Freedman stable with Thornton up, and first starters from that yard tend to be ready. Foxtrot Charlie ($5.25) has only one placing from five runs in the same period and looks a horse the market likes more than his form does. Brilliant Bull Ant has been to Wangaratta three times without placing.

Win bet on Rock About.

Race 4: Thanks Jeff Anselmi Mdn Plate, 2:30PM, 1739m

The market has Volestain favourite at $3.40, and the McEvoy name explains it: three wins from six runners at this track. But Volestain has run fifth and seventh in two starts, and the price is pricing in the stable rather than the horse. Dela Bella is the one with the form. Her last three runs read second, second, third, all inside the last three months, and no maiden in this field has placed more often lately.

R J Hurdle rides from barrier 4, which should let her settle handy and hold her spot when the speed comes back. At $5 with Unibet she is the better value of the two.

Volestain is the danger if the stable has found the key to him, and Fiorente Charm is the Payne and Egan debutant to respect at $6.50.

Win bet on Dela Bella. Saver on Volestain.

Race 5: Sportsbet Race Replays Mdn Plate, 3:00PM, 2187m

Circus Moon or Hold This? One is the short-priced three-year-old, the other the five-year-old who keeps finishing in the first three. Circus Moon is $2.90 with Unibet and comes from M M Laurie, who has sent four runners to Wangaratta for two wins and three placings. He has placed twice in his last four runs, including a second last time, and nothing in the top half of the market has better recent form.

Hold This is the value angle. Three placings from four runs in the last three months, barrier 1 at a staying trip, and $12 with Unibet. He keeps finding one or two better, which is why he is still a maiden, but over this distance from that gate he will get every chance.

Circus Moon to win, Hold This each-way. Off’n’gawn ($7.50) is the outsider to note, from a Jason Warren stable that places with four of every six runners here.

Race 6: Winsec Savings & Loans (Bm56), 3:30PM, 2187m

King Kauffo won, then ran second twice. Five runs in the last three months have produced four top-three finishes, one of them a win, and he draws barrier 1 over 2187m with Lachlan King, the busiest rider at the track with 42 rides. Two runs here without placing are the only blemish, and they don’t outweigh what he is doing now.

Dane On Tour is the danger. He won two starts back before running eighth last time, and he has a win and one other placing from his last five. If he puts the last run behind him, he can sit on King Kauffo and test him late.

King Kauffo is the banker for multis. Win bet.

Race 7: Vale Brian Creed (Bm56), 4:00PM, 1739m

The Quiet Immortal is the best bet at Wangaratta. Three runs in the last three months for a win and two placings, and his last six read third, third, first, third, first, third. He is a four-year-old still on the way up, and he has placed on one of his two visits here.

Alice Kennedy rides from barrier 8, which means a choice of positions in a big field. He has not finished worse than third in any of his last six starts, and nothing else in this field can match that.

The danger comes from his own stable. Sheer Lunacy won on his only Wangaratta start, and while recent form is patchier, an eight-year-old who likes the track can surprise. Sensational Ruler won one of his two runs in the last three months but draws 16.

Win bet on The Quiet Immortal. Our NAP.

Race 8: Christmas Party @ Wangaratta – On Sale Now (Bm56), 4:30PM, 1422m

Two horses with Wangaratta form, two different profiles. Black Adam has placed on his only start here and has three top-three finishes from five runs in the last three months, one of them a win: a second, a win and a second before a sixth and a fourth at his last two. Raven’s Silver has the deeper course record, a win and another placing from four Wangaratta runs, but his recent figures are less steady.

The weight of form still says Black Adam, even with the last two runs below his best. M Aitken rides for D J Mccarthy, and the horse has the consistency to handle a big field over 1422m. Raven’s Silver, with Moloney aboard, looks the place bet. Lujaego won his only Wangaratta start and is worth a small each-way interest.

Black Adam to win. Raven’s Silver in the exotics.

Race 9: Melbourne Cup Day @ Wangaratta (Bm56), 5:00PM, 1203m

I Am Algadon won on debut and was fifth next time, and the second run looks the one to forgive for a three-year-old learning the job. M M Laurie trains him, the same stable that has won with half its runners here, and he carries one of the lighter weights in the race with Nadia Daniels aboard. From barrier 5, he gets a sit.

Swift Hit is the danger and the oldest horse in the race. The eleven-year-old won at his last start, and a horse in that kind of form doesn’t care about birthdays. Densetsu has placed in two of his three Wangaratta runs, which makes him the each-way runner in a race where few others have Wangaratta form at all.

Win bet on I Am Algadon. Densetsu each-way.

Where the money goes

NAP: The Quiet Immortal (Race 7, 4:00PM). Placed in each of his last six starts, with two wins among them. A four-year-old who keeps turning up, in a field without another runner that consistent.

Value: Hold This (Race 5, 3:00PM). Three placings from his last four, barrier 1 over a staying trip, and $12 with Unibet at the time of writing. Each-way is the play.

Banker: King Kauffo (Race 6, 3:30PM). A win and two seconds in his last three, and drawn to get the run of the race. The multi anchor.

Each-way: Densetsu (Race 9, 5:00PM). Placed in two of three runs at Wangaratta. Not a winner by habit, but he knows the track.

Course angle: Payne and Egan. Three wins from six together here, and Egan rides Kinky Mistress, Princess Geisha, Fiorente Charm, Helioson and Royal Turf for the stable today. Any of them fits a Wangaratta best bets list.

If Egan keeps finding the winners’ stall at this rate, Payne’s acceptances will be the first thing worth checking before every Wangaratta meeting.
