The Caulfield Cup (2400m) is one of the big three Melbourne spring ‘majors’ sitting alongside the Cox Plate (2040m) and the Melbourne Cup (3200m).

See who made our list of top 5 Caulfield Cup winners since 2000.

In modern times, the feature race has been taken out by some outstanding gallopers.

Top 5 Caulfield Cup winners.

1. NORTHERLY (2002)

Northerly heads our list of the best Caulfield Cup winners since the year 2000. The Fred Kersley-trained galloper with the distinctive yellow and black colours was known as the fighting tiger’ and his qualities were on full display in the 2002 Caulfield Cup, carrying top-weight of 58kg and leading all the way, holding off all challengers. He is one of the most popular gallopers in Australia since the year 2000 and had a spring to remember in 2002, backing up a weak later to win the Cox Plate.

2. DUNADEN (2012)

Dunaden is one of six gallopers since 2000 that was trained internationally when coming down to take out the Caulfield Cup and is another that achieved the feat with the 58kg, defeating Alcopop in 2012. In 2011, Dunaden pipped Red Cadeaux in the closest photo-finish ever in the Melbourne Cup and went on to win the Hong Kong Vase (2400m) later that year.

3. ELVSTROEM (2004)

Often overlooked in discussions about champion gallopers from the early 2000s because he featured in a time when we were spoilt, Elvstroem held out Makybe Diva in a classic version of the race in 2004. The Tony Vasil-trained galloper won four Group 1 races in Australia, including the Victoria Derby (2500m) and CF Orr Stakes (1400m), while he was able to win overseas, taking out the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Stakes (1800m). He finished his career overseas, finishing in the top four in four successive Group 1 races.

4. ETHEREAL (2001)

The Kiwi mare, Ethereal, was the star of the 2001 staying races. Earlier in the year, she announced herself with a win in the Queensland Oaks (2200m) before being set for the spring majors in Melbourne. She held out the 1999 Caulfield Cup winner, Sky Heights, in 2001, surviving a protest, before rattling home to claim the Melbourne Cup a few weeks later. She went on to win another Group 1 in 2002, the Tancred Stakes (2400m), known then as the BMW.

5. MONGOLIAN KHAN (2015)

Another top Kiwi that sneaks into the top five is Mongolian Khan. In the autumn of 2015, the Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman-trained galloper achieved the rare feat of taking out the New Zealand Derby (2400m) and the Australian Derby (2400m) before coming back as a four-year-old and defeating some of the worlds best in the Caulfield Cup.
