Top 5 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winners.

1. Winx (2017, 2018 & 2019)

It is hard to believe it has almost been a year since we last saw Winx. She farewelled racing fans with her victory in the Queen Elizabeth in 2019, her third in the race, sitting alongside her four Cox Plate (2040m) victories. She missed this race in 2016 after a gut busting win in the Doncaster (1600m) a week earlier. She won her first Queen Elizabeth in 2017 by over five lengths from Hartnell, by four lengths from Gailo Chop in 2018 before easing to win by just under two from Kluger in her farewell last year.

2. Might And Power (1998)

It is not too far fetched to say that Might And Power could have defeated Winx on any given day and his effort in the 1998 version of this race proves that. The Jack Denham galloper was at the height of his powers that day, cruising to an astonishing 10 length win and only Winx’ overall record separates the two. However, Might And Power was able to do it over further and his win in the 1997 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Melbourne Cup (3200m) go down as some of the best of all time. Sadly, injury curtailed the career of the son of Zabeel, who retired with 15 wins and over $5 million in prizemoney.

3. Lonhro (2003)

It is pretty hard to split Lonhro and Grand Armee in this list, given that Grand Armee smashed Lonhro in the 2004 edition of the race. The pair met on four occasions and the record was split at two apiece but over the journey, Lonhro won an amazing 26 races from 35 starts, including 11 Group 1’s. Grand Armee was 13 from 31 with seven Group 1’s. In 2003, Lonhro was the dominant performer, winning nine of 11 and the crowd favourite was too good in the Queen Elizabeth that year, finishing ahead of the likes of Pentastic and Republic Lass. The latter of that duo had previously beaten Northerly in the Ranvet Stakes a few weeks earlier.

4. Rough Habit (1992)

Rough Habit was a permanent fixture of racing in Australasia from 1990 until 1995. He won 29 races in that time period, including 11 at the highest level. It was the Queensland racing scene that the New Zealand bred galloper would dominate, picking up the Doomben Cup (2000m) on three occasions as well as the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) twice. But he also claimed wins at the highest level in New Zealand, Victoria and in New South Wales. His win in the Queen Elizabeth came in 1992, while in 1994, he narrowly went down to Solvit in the Cox Plate (2040m).

5. Grand Armee (2004 & 2005)

The two time winner scored a huge upset win in 2004, spoiling Lonhro’s farewell party and went on to dominate the likes of Delzao and Mummify in the 2005 race, which would eventually be his second last start. He was a typically tough Gai Waterhouse horse that would make his own luck on the speed and won or placed in 26 of his 31 starts before a respiratory problem caused him to retire prematurely as he was about to embark on a spring campaign as a six-year-old.
