1. MORE JOYOUS (2011, 2012)

A winner of 21 of her 33 starts, More Joyous was one of the best and most versatile gallopers from her first race in 2009 until her retirement in 2013. A winner from 1100m to 2000m, she split her time in both Sydney and Melbourne and made the Canterbury Stakes her own in 2011 and 2012. In 2011 she won the Canterbury Stakes by three lengths as a $1.30 favourite before resuming with a comfortable win the year after. She went on to take out the Doncaster that season with 57.5kg, just shy of the 58kg that another champion mare, Sunline carted to victory in 2002. She won eight Group 1 races and was the Champion Middle Distance Racehorse in 2012.

2. PIERRO (2013)

The 2013 winner conquered More Joyous in a vintage edition of the Canterbury Stakes in 2013. He was arguably the better horse (as was shown that day) but raced just 14 times, winning 11 and placing in the other three. He is one of the better two-year-olds of all time in Australian racing, winning all six starts including the Triple Crown. Before heading to stud he picked up this race and the George Ryder Stakes (1500m) before missing out to the wet-tracker, Sacred Falls, with 57kg in the Doncaster when aged three.

3. SHOGUN LODGE (2001)

Shogun Lodge is often forgotten in conversations about racehorses from the early 2000s but was a champion in his own right and won the Canterbury Stakes in 2001 ahead of Assertive Lad. He won three Group 1 races and remarkably, he was runner-up in a further 12, missing out behind the likes of Sunline, Northerly and Lonhro.

4. HAPPY CLAPPER (2018)

Like Shogun Lodge, Happy Clapper was runner-up in a number of Group 1 races, filling the exacta behind Winx on five occasions. But he was able to win the Canterbury Stakes in 2018 as well as the Doncaster Mile (1600m) in the same campaign. His first Group 1 win came at his 28th start and that was in the Epsom Handicap (1600m) of 2017. The recently retired galloper won at the highest level on three occasions.

5. TRAPEZE ARTIST (2019)

A four-time Group 1 winner, Trapeze Artist took out eh Canterbury Stakes in 2019, leading all the way from Shoals. He shot to prominence as a three-year-old, claiming the Golden Rose (1400m) at big odds with Tye Angland on board and after being set for slightly longer trips such as the Randwick Guineas (1600m), he dropped back in distance to take out the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) and the All Aged Stakes (1400m) in 2018. A runner-up in the 2018 Everest (1200m) behind Redzel, his Canterbury Stakes win came at his second last career start.
