Robert Sangster History
A standard weight-for-age event that is available for fillies and mares to contest, the Robert Sangster Stakes is worth $400,000 in prizemoney.
It takes place at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide during the autumn annually, run in either April or May, and is one of the key feature races held during the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.
First run in 1983, the race was won by Ranee’s Palace when it was named the Swettenham Stud Stakes and was run as a Special race.
The event then took Listed race status for 1984 and 1985 before gaining Group 3 status between 1986-1998. Between 1999 and 2004 it became a Group 2 event and has held Group 1 status from 2005 onwards with Alinghi claiming the event the first time it was run at the elite level under the renamed Robert Sangster Stakes name.
It is one of two Group 1 features held on the program with the Australasian Oaks (2000m) being run for the three-year-old fillies on what is known as South Australia’s richest day of racing.
Other races on the day include the Group 2 Queen of the South Stakes (1600m), Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m) and the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m).
The Robert Sangster Stakes is yet to have a multiple winner of the event.
High-quality mares that have won the Robert Sangster Stakes, such as Platelet (2013) and Black Caviar (2012), have the option of backing up two weeks later in Adelaide’s premier event, the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.
Other famous horses to win the race include Dantelah (1999), Our Egyptian Raine (2003), Alinghi (2005), Bel Mer (2009), Rostova (2010), Driefontein (2014), Miracles Of Life (2015) and Shoals (2018).
