1. TAKEOVER TARGET (2007)

Takeover Target won the Doomben 10000 in 2007 when it was raced over the 1350m and in between the then BTC Cup (1200m) and the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m). The win was one of his eight at Group 1 level and one of his 21 victories in total, coming ahead of the gun mare, Gold Edition. The $1250 purchase is one of the modern fairytales of Australian racing and he was a victor not only in Queensland but in Victoria, NSW, South Australia and Western Australia, while he famously won at Royal Ascot in the UK, as well as Singapore.

2. APACHE CAT (2008/2009)

Apache Cat is often remembered for his exploits in the southern states but loved the Doomben racecourse, winning three times from four appearances at the venue with those successes coming in Group 1 company. He was a two-time winner of the Doomben 10000, defeating Murtajill in 2008 and Black Piranha in 2009. He retired with eight wins at Group 1 level and claimed the Australian Guineas (1600m) early in his career, before blossoming into a champion sprinter.

3. FALVELON (2001/2002)

Another two-time winner of this race, Falvelon is regarded as one of the best Queensland horses of all time and defeated Spinning Hill in the 2001 version of this race before backing up a year later to defeat Show A Heart. A winner of 15 of his 37 starts, the Danny Bougoure-trained galloper also did it on the world stage at Sha Tin in Hong Kong, taking out the HK Sprint in 2000 and 2001.

4. REDZEL (2017)

A winner of over $16 million in prize money, Redzel is best remembered for his efforts to take out the Everest (1200m) in the first two years that the marquee Sydney race was run, in 2017 and 2018. The Snowden galloper picked up his first Group 1 win with victory in the Doomben 10000 in 2017 and retired with 15 wins from 39 starts, picking up a staggering $16.4 million in prize money for connections.

5. BEL ESPRIT (2003)

The exciting frontrunner burst onto the scene as a younger horse and swept the Melbourne two-year-old races, including the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m). He returned at three to take out a couple of early spring races then was unlucky not to take out further Group 1 success with a series of runner-up performances in the Manikato Stakes (1200m), Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and Caulfield Guineas (1600m). His win in the 2003 Doomben 10000 came at his second last career start and he led all the way that day to defeat Private Steer and Spinning Hill.
