Day 2 The Championships – Who’s Tommy Berry’s Best Ride?
Star jockey Tommy Berry has declared his best ride on Day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick this Saturday.
Berry has three horses hard in the market for one of Australia’s richest racedays.
He picked up the ride on Anamoe when James McDonald elected to ride Verry Elleegant in the $4milion weight-for-age championship.
Despite the three-year-old’s seven-length demolition job in the Rosehill Guineas and even his gutsy second in last year’s Cox Plate, Berry reckons there’s a better bet for punters at the meeting.
Race | No. / Horse Name / Barrier | Berry’s Comment |
1 | 2. Moko (2) | She handled herslef very well on the heavy when I rode her last start, has the 1400m run under the belt and in a race without the A-graders she ticks all boxes |
2 | 3. Military Expert (12) | The class beat him in the Randwick Guineas but coming back in trip suits, he’ll be on speed, very fit and loves the heavy. I’m surprised how big his odds are. |
3 | 14. Confessed (4) | Hard fit but for mine will need a PB to run in the top three. |
4 | 5. Lady Laguna (10) | Copped a tough run in the Golden Slipper and there has to be some concern about what affect that wil have but she handles heavy well. |
5 | 1. In The Congo (6) | He’s my best ride of the day. He’s a Group 1 winner at 1400m and this is 1200m on slop. Carried 56.5kg in The Galaxy a huge weight for a 3YO. I galloped him Tuesday and he flew. |
8 | 9. Anamoe (5) | G1 winner at 2 and again as a spring and autumn 3yo – only the good ones do that. Zaki is my biggest danger, he’s a better horse in Sydney and 2000m is his pet trip. |
9 | 12. Steinem (GB) (17) | My manager was super keen for this ride. Spoke to Ciaron [Maher] at the sales and he’s convinced she’s back to her best so lookout |
10 | 7. Marboosha (14) | A better barrier would’ve had me more confident |
