Newcastle Racing Tips 11 July — can Latham run the card?
Newcastle Racing Tips 11 July — can Latham run the card?
There are Newcastle meetings where you can get cute. This is not one of them. If you’re trying to land on winners with minimal pain, you start by working out which jockey is most likely to give their horse every chance, then you build out from there. Today that rider is K S Latham, who turns up with rides across the early part of the program and a proper record at the track: 61 rides here for 12 wins and 31 placings, so he’s in the frame more than half the time.
We’ve only got three races on the data sheet for this article, all on turf, all maidens, and that matters because maiden races aren’t about who has proven brilliance. They’re about who can hold a position, who can finish a race off, and which stables have placed their horses to finally break through. These Newcastle racing tips lean into that: barrier maps, weight, and the small but useful slivers of track history that exist in these fields.
Newcastle — the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one Newcastle start at most, so treat any course record as a clue rather than a certainty.
On the rider side, there’s enough volume to trust a few patterns. Latham and Mitchell Bell are the two you want in your corner if the race turns tactical, while Jean Van Overmeire tends to pop up in the placings when he’s on the right horse.
Jockeys with meaningful Newcastle records (5+ rides), sorted by place rate
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mitchell Bell | 50 | 9 | 30 | 18.00 | 60.00 |
| K S Latham | 61 | 12 | 31 | 19.67 | 50.82 |
| Rebecca Bronett Prag | 7 | 1 | 4 | 14.29 | 57.14 |
| Leeshelle Small | 19 | 4 | 8 | 21.05 | 42.11 |
| R Hutchings | 32 | 2 | 11 | 6.25 | 34.38 |
| L Magorrian | 65 | 5 | 21 | 7.69 | 32.31 |

One more lens that matters today: trainers who actually do well here, not just those with a big profile. Richard Litt wins a third of his Newcastle runners and places well over half of them (18 runners is a real sample), which makes his 2YO runner later in the day automatically more interesting than the bare form suggests.
Race-by-race: Newcastle predictions
Race 1: Beresfield Bowling Club Midway Mdn Hcp — 11:25, 984m
Sprightly Affair looks the most likely winner because she’s already shown she can handle the Newcastle assignment and she draws to get the run of the race. She ran third on her only start here, and in these 984m maidens that usually means she’s got enough gate speed and balance to hold a spot and make her own luck.
The race shape looks kind to anything that can sit just behind the speed. From gate 7, Jean Van Overmeire should be able to drop in with cover rather than get dragged into a wide chase. And while his overall Newcastle numbers aren’t in the elite bracket, he’s experienced enough here to avoid the classic “maiden sprint” trap of panicking at the 600m and being left with nothing late.
The danger is Lady Segosha (gate 5). She’s got the right form pattern for this grade with a 4 then a 2, and she also has that one Newcastle run on the board (finished fourth). That’s not a badge of honour, but it’s a tick for track familiarity in a race full of unknowns. If she lands closer than Sprightly Affair in the run, she can absolutely turn it into a fight.
Staking: Win bet Sprightly Affair. Save on Lady Segosha if you want a safety net.
Race 2: Club Charlestown Mdn Plate — 12:00, 2023m
Here’s the puzzle: do you want the proven grinder who keeps finding one better, or the classy stable that might simply out-talent them? I’m leaning to the grinder. Zorko gets my money because his recent form line screams “ready for 2000m”, and he finally meets a race where the speed looks manageable.
His pattern (4-8-3-5-9-2) isn’t pretty at a glance, but that last-start second is exactly what you want in a staying maiden: close enough to win, and likely improving with the trip. Madeline Owen from barrier 7 isn’t a cuddle from the draw, but in a 2023m race you’ve got time to sort it out. If she can find cover before the first turn, Zorko can build into the race and make it about stamina from the 600m.
The obvious danger is Audaciously Frank from the Waterhouse and Bott yard. He’s gone 6 then 2 in two starts and he carries 127.8, which is a serious push in a maiden plate. The stable’s Newcastle record sits at 15 runners for one win and three placings, so they don’t dominate here, but they do bring horses that can control a race when allowed to roll. If Audaciously Frank gets to dictate up front, he can pinch it.
One to keep safe in wider bets is Heliconia (gate 1). She’s a four-year-old with miles in the legs and the inside draw is a gift over this trip. She hasn’t won at Newcastle, but she does get the map to improve on her recent efforts without needing luck.
Staking: Zorko each-way. Small saver win bet Audaciously Frank if you think they’ll control it.
Race 3: The Wests Group Super Mdn Plate — 12:40, 984m
The market often overthinks these, but the simplest angle holds up: put yourself with the rider who delivers at Newcastle, on the horse that gets the softest trip. Gunna Reign fits that more than any other runner here because he draws gate 1, carries only 119.0, and gets Leeshelle Small who has genuine Newcastle numbers (19 rides, four wins, eight placings).
Yes, the form is ugly (7-7-2-0-6), but it’s the sort of ugly you can forgive in a mixed maiden where half the field is either early in their prep or simply not up to it. From the inside, Small can hold the fence, let the others burn petrol from wide gates, and get first crack when the sprint goes on. If there’s one word for this race it’s “position”. Barrier 1 matters.
Unjust is the danger because he’s the hardened old head in the race and he’s been around the Newcastle circuit plenty: three runs here for two placings. That’s not a winning record, but it tells you he copes with the layout, and if the leaders go too hard early he’s the one most likely to be still running on at the 100m.
I’ll also mention Gratifying purely on stable intent. Chris Maher places well enough at Newcastle (22 runners, three wins, nine placings) and Mitchell Bell’s track strike is strong. The issue is the map: gate 12 in a 984m maiden can turn a horse into a spectator if it misses the kick.

Staking: Win bet Gunna Reign. If you’re playing a quinella, pair him with Unjust.
The plays
NAP: Gunna Reign (Race 3, 12:40). Gate 1 and the light weight combo with Leeshelle Small is the cleanest “get every chance” profile on the page, and that matters more than pretty form in a 984m maiden.
Value: Zorko (Race 2, 12:00) each-way. Staying maidens reward the horse that can sustain a run, and his last-start second reads like a horse that’s finally found the right trip.
Banker for multis: Sprightly Affair (Race 1, 11:25) to place. She’s placed on her only Newcastle run and draws to settle without doing anything silly early.
Each-way angle: Unjust (Race 3) if the price is there. He’s placed in two of three Newcastle visits, and in these mixed maidens that course comfort can be the difference between running on for fourth and actually landing in the top three.
Course angle to remember: don’t ignore Richard Litt at Newcastle. He wins a third of his runners here and places better than six out of ten, and that’s the kind of stable pattern you can keep riding whenever he brings one back to this track.
