Newcastle Racing Tips 14 July — can Waller’s team finish the job?

Opening

There’s one story running right through this Newcastle card: Chris Waller has planted runners in almost every spot where a maiden or a BM64 can be won without needing miracles, and the bookings tell you he’s not here for a day out. Phantom Major turns up in two races, there’s depth in the maidens, and the later handicaps have just enough speed on paper to punish anything that’s one-paced. It’s a seven-race Newcastle program on turf, and while we don’t have a published going in the racecard, the way these fields are built suggests position and timing will matter as much as raw ability. Below you’ll get the full set of Newcastle racing tips race by race, with one clear pick each time, one danger worth respecting, and a straight answer on whether I’d actually bet it or just watch.

Newcastle — the setup

Course history is thin for a lot of these because plenty are maidens or lightly raced types. So rather than pretending a 1-from-1 makes someone a track demon, I’m treating most of it as a guide, not gospel.

Limited course form across today’s fields — most runners are working with one or two Newcastle runs, so I’m leaning harder on current form lines, barriers, and the jockey and stable intent.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Zac Lloyd 14 4 9 28.57 64.29
K S Latham 69 12 37 17.39 53.62
Mitchell Bell 56 9 33 16.07 58.93
A Bullock 25 7 11 28.00 44.00
C Schofield 14 4 8 28.57 57.14

If you’re building around rider impact, Zac Lloyd is the Newcastle jockey I want on my side. He’s not just winning here, he’s in the finish often enough to make sense of backing him each-way when the horse profile stacks up.

Race-by-race

Race 1: A Plus Contracting Mdn Plate — 12:20, 1367m

Algorithmic is the runner I want to start the day with. The form line screams “ready” without needing a big leap: 273-22 says he’s been around the mark, he draws gate 4 to land in a spot, and A Gibbons is a sensible pilot around Newcastle when the race is about timing rather than brute force. He’s placed on his only Newcastle start, which is a nice tick, but it’s still only one visit, so I’m not making it bigger than it is. What matters more is he keeps turning up and running to the same level, and this looks the right trip to control the race from midfield and launch when the leaders feel the pressure. The danger is State Secret. That Waterhouse and Bott profile of 28-24 is classic: a horse that can travel, get to the right part of the track, and pinch a race if the tempo drops mid-race. Rachel King can make a mess of a small field if she’s allowed to dictate. Staking: Win bet Algorithmic. If State Secret looks like getting a soft lead in the yard and early stages, keep a small saver on her.

Race 2: Nzb Mdn Plate — 12:55, 1531m

Here’s the puzzle: do you take the exposed grinders, or do you side with the stable that’s built to win these? I’m landing on Hellfighter. The Nathan Doyle runner has the kind of profile that wins a Newcastle maiden when the race actually gets run properly: 624293 tells you he’s competitive, and A B Collett from gate 2 can put him close enough that he doesn’t need luck. He’s had two Newcastle runs for one placing, which is useful rather than decisive. This is more about him being the one who can sustain a run when others throw in one sprint and hope. The one that can beat him is Enviable from the Waller camp. She’s a serial placer type (33742-) and Waller’s runners tend to find the line in these midweek maidens. Zac Lloyd is booked and he rides Newcastle well, hitting the frame far more often than he misses here. Staking: Small win bet Hellfighter. Quinella saver with Enviable if prices allow, otherwise keep it simple.

Race 3: Dailey Family Funerals Mdn Plate — 13:35, 1531m

I’m going in on the race shape here. There’s enough on-paper forward intent from a few to make this a proper 1500m contest rather than a dawdle and dash, and that sets it up for the horse that keeps finding the line without needing the perfect script. Artgirl fits that. Her form reads 332382, she draws gate 2 to get every favour, and Siena Grima can ride her cold enough to relax but close enough to pounce. She’s placed on her only Newcastle run, and that’s all you can fairly say, but it lines up with the overall profile: she turns up and runs well. The danger is Movie Night. The 8-7223 progression is the kind that can easily tick over into a win, and Zac Lloyd is a serious asset at this track. If he gets cover from gate 6 and angles out at the right time, he’s the one you’ll be cursing at the 100m. Staking: Each-way Artgirl. If the market is tight and you don’t like the price, this is a watch-and-learn race.

Race 4: New Fm/2hd Mdn Plate — 14:10, 1367m

The market will try to make this a Waller race because he’s got numbers and there are a few with the right look. I’d rather back the one that’s already shown it can be in the fight and gets the run of the race. Better Bloom is the pick. Gate 1 matters over this trip, and if S Guymer can hold a spot behind the speed, he won’t have to burn petrol early. The form 436 says he’s honest, and with a lot of these still learning, honesty can be enough. The main danger is Sphere. She’s been living in the placings (6/32333) and she’s drawn gate 6, which lets her find rhythm and build. If the pace is only moderate, she’s the one who can roll over them from the 600m and keep going. Staking: Win bet Better Bloom, but keep it modest. If Sphere drifts to a backable each-way price, that’s the safer play for the race.

Race 5: Sharp Office Midway Hcp (C1) — 14:45, 1367m

This is the best betting race on the card because you’ve got progressive three-year-olds against a couple of older heads, and the map looks clean enough to trust your selection. Smichov is the one I want. The form 32-51 says he’s trending the right way, A B Collett sticks, and gate 7 gives him options to slide in with cover rather than get dragged into an early fight. In a Midway, I want a horse that can handle a genuine tempo once, then repeat it. His profile says he can. The danger is Nuns Chorus. He’s coming off a win (4631) and he gets Zac Lloyd, who simply rides Newcastle as well as anyone on this card. From gate 6 he’ll be in the right spot to strike first if the leaders overdo it.

Staking: Win bet Smichov. Exacta saver Smichov to beat Nuns Chorus if you want a bit of spice without getting silly.

Race 6: Davali Thoroughbreds (Bm64) — 15:20, 2406m

The contrast race: one camp brings momentum, the other brings class. Over 2400m at Newcastle, I’ll back momentum every time if the horse looks like it enjoys finding the line. Spacetime Legend is that horse. The form 822112 is rock solid, and he’s won on his only start at Newcastle, which is a real confidence boost even if it’s still just one run here. He draws gate 7, gets G Buckley, and from that alley he can stay out of trouble and build into the race when others start searching for air. The danger is Alnair. He’s won his last two (4-23411), and he’s placed in both Newcastle visits. That’s the profile of a horse that turns up and runs his race, which is exactly what you want in staying handicaps where things can get messy. Staking: Win bet Spacetime Legend. If Alnair is the better price, flip it and back him each-way, because he’s hard to knock over when he’s in that kind of form.

Race 7: The Prince Of Merewether (Bm64) — 15:55, 1531m

I’m starting with the stable move here. Waller’s got representation again, and this is the sort of race where a consistent three-year-old can sit on the speed and out-kick the older horses who need the perfect run. Wootton Way is the pick. The form 1-33283 reads like a horse who keeps landing in the fight, and Siena Grima from gate 8 should be able to find cover midfield and peel at the right time. This isn’t a track-specialist play, it’s a “right grade, right pattern” play. The danger is Jamacri. He’s flying (244211), he gets a feather weight at 116.8, and gate 2 means he’ll get the soft run that wins these races. If he’s even close to the leaders at the turn, he’ll give you the scare. Staking: Win bet Wootton Way if you get a fair price. If the market crushes him, take Jamacri each-way and call it a day.

Where the money goes

If I’m playing this Newcastle meeting properly, I’m not spraying bets through the maidens for ego. I’m building around one good opinion and a couple of disciplined supports. NAP: Smichov (Race 5, 14:45). Progressive form (32-51), and the map looks like he gets a run without spending early. Value: Artgirl (Race 3, 13:35) each-way. She keeps turning up (332382), draws to stalk, and doesn’t need the race to fall apart to be in the finish. Banker for multis: Algorithmic (Race 1, 12:20) to place. He’s knocking on the door (273-22) and draws to get the right trip. Each-way anchor: Alnair (Race 6, 15:20). Two Newcastle runs for two placings and arrives off back-to-back wins. Course angle: When Zac Lloyd rides at Newcastle, you can treat him as a genuine frame rider, not a boom-bust jockey. He’s ridden here enough to matter and he lands in the placings often. Keep an eye on how the winners are getting into the race by the 600m today. If they’re sweeping wide and sustaining, the later meetings at Newcastle will reward staying with those strong-finishing profiles.
