Northam Racing Tips 9 July — can Pike nick one early?
Northam — the setup
If you want one angle to hang your day on at Northam, it’s this: the jockey room has a couple of proper “track operators” and one of them turns up with an inside draw in the opener. That’s the sort of small edge that matters on a winter Thursday, when you’re dealing with maiden form, new distances, and a stack of runners still learning their job.
We’ve only got four races to work with here, all on turf, and every one of them is a maiden. That means you win by being picky, not by trying to have an opinion on everything. I’m leaning hardest into the horses that are trending the right way and the riders who repeatedly make good decisions around this circuit.
I’ll keep these Northam racing tips practical: who I’m backing, why I’m backing them, and where I’d rather watch than donate.
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two starts here, so treat course records as context, not gospel.

Who rides and trains Northam well (and when it matters)
With maidens, I care less about “big name” and more about who consistently puts a horse into the race at the right time. Northam’s numbers back a few riders with enough volume to take seriously.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lucy Fiore | 13 | 3 | 7 | 23.08 | 53.85 |
| W Pike | 11 | 2 | 6 | 18.18 | 54.55 |
| Austin Galati | 13 | 2 | 7 | 15.38 | 53.85 |
| Jefferson Tsang | 10 | 3 | 3 | 30.00 | 30.00 |
| Laqdar Ramoly | 10 | 1 | 4 | 10.00 | 40.00 |
| S Parnham | 12 | 1 | 5 | 8.33 | 41.67 |
| T Turner | 13 | 1 | 3 | 7.69 | 23.08 |
| Holly Watson | 13 | 1 | 3 | 7.69 | 23.08 |
On the training side, there aren’t many huge sample sizes on the card, but one name stands out for sheer repeatability: Michael Grantham has sent 7 runners to Northam for 2 wins and 4 placings. That’s enough evidence to treat his runners as “arrive ready” types, not just making up numbers.
Race-by-race: Northam predictions
Race 1: Afgri Christmas In July – 23 July Mdn — 12:34, 2406m
The question in the opener is simple: who actually wants 2400 metres? In a lot of these country maidens, the finishers are the ones who stay when everyone else hits the wall at the 300.
I’m siding with Savienne (barrier 1, 3yo, 56kg) because the set-up screams “economical run, last crack”. William Pike jumps on and he rides Northam properly: 11 rides here for 2 wins and he hits the frame more often than not. From gate 1, he doesn’t need to be cute. Hold a spot, save ground, peel when the others start labouring.
The danger is My Monster (barrier 3). The form line reads like a horse that’s been hovering around the mark without breaking through, and the draw gives Taj Dyson options if the race turns messy early.
One to keep honest is Yalda Night (barrier 9, top weight). She’s placed on her only Northam run, but the wide alley over this trip can turn into a long, fuel-burning run if she gets caught working.
Staking: Win bet Savienne. If you’re playing multiples, save with My Monster.
Race 2: Dunnings Mdn — 13:12, 1094m
This looks like the day’s most obvious “barrier plus progression” race. You’ve got a few who have had enough chances, and a couple who look ready to finally land a blow with the right run.
Invincible Sin (barrier 1, 3yo) is the one I want on-side. The form isn’t pretty yet, but the inside draw at 1094m gives Jefferson Tsang every chance to make it tidy. And Tsang’s Northam record is proper, not a two-ride mirage: 10 rides for 3 wins. If he can hold the fence and keep the horse out of trouble, that alone can be worth a length in a maiden.
The horse I respect as the danger is Kingsley Town (barrier 3). The form line has been building and Kayla Holroyd can ride a patient race when the tempo’s sharp. If they overdo it up front, this is the one that can blouse them late.
Staking: Small win bet Invincible Sin. If the market makes Kingsley Town a backable price, I’d rather play it as a saver than try to get too clever.
Race 3: Debortoli Family Winemakers Mdn — 13:47, 1203m
The contrast here is between runners who’ve already shown they can get into a race and the unknowns who might have talent but haven’t proved it under pressure. I’d rather back the one that’s already put itself in the finish.
Peanut Butter (barrier 2, 4yo) feels like the right anchor. It’s a horse that’s been right there in recent runs and the draw lets Jarrad Noske land close enough without burning petrol. You don’t need hero rides in these; you need clean ones.
The danger is Rock The Fox (barrier 3, 3yo). Two starts, two honest efforts, and the race shape suits something that can sit just off the early speed and be strong the last 150. T Turner’s overall Northam numbers aren’t flash, but he gets enough right tactically to keep you nervous.
One worth mentioning, with the usual small-sample warning, is Wrexham. It’s placed on its only Northam start and sometimes that “been here, coped with it” experience matters when a few rivals see the place for the first time.
Staking: Win bet Peanut Butter. Exacta saver: Peanut Butter with Rock The Fox.
Race 4: Tabtouch Download Today Mdn — 14:22, 1422m
The stable move I can’t ignore is Mitchell Pateman holding a strong hand. He saddles Dirty Habits and Phat Chaps, and he’s a trainer who’s already won at Northam from 7 runners. Not dominant, but enough to treat his placement seriously.
I’m with Dirty Habits (barrier 2). The form reads like a horse that has already worked out racing, and the draw puts Lucy Fiore in the box seat. Fiore rides this track as well as anyone in today’s room: 13 rides for 3 wins, and she’s in the money more than half the time. That’s the profile you want when you’re betting into maidens.
Olaf The Snowman (barrier 5) is the danger. He’s placed in both Northam visits, and even though two runs doesn’t make a “specialist”, it does tell you he handles the circuit and turns up. With S Parnham steering, you’ll get a proper crack at them.
On Cue is the other one I’d keep on the right side of exotics if you’re playing wider. It’s placed on its only start at the track, and barrier 6 is workable if the speed map lets it slide in.
Staking: This is the best betting race. Win bet Dirty Habits, saver win Olaf The Snowman if the price gets silly.

The plays
My money lands in two spots because that’s where the card gives you something to actually hold on to.
NAP: Dirty Habits (Race 4, 14:22). Barrier 2 plus Lucy Fiore is the sort of pairing that keeps you out of traffic and in the finish. Fiore’s Northam record has depth, and that matters more than vibes in these races.
Value: Invincible Sin (Race 2, 13:12). It’s not a flash form profile, but the inside draw and Jefferson Tsang’s strike rate at this track makes it a play at the right odds.
Banker for multis: Savienne (Race 1, 12:34). Pike from barrier 1 in the staying maiden is the safest map on the card.
Each-way look: Olaf The Snowman (Race 4). Placed in both Northam runs, and that “turn up and race” habit is valuable late in the day.
Course angle: When you’re stuck, follow the riders with real Northam volume. Pike, Fiore, Galati and Tsang all have enough rides here to trust the patterns.
Next time Pateman turns up at Northam with a couple in the one race, I’m treating it as intent until they prove otherwise.
