Pinjarra Racing Tips 16 July — can the inside gates decide it?
Pinjarra Racing Tips 16 July — can the inside gates decide it?
Pinjarra on a winter Thursday is often about one thing: who gets to hold a spot and who gets stuck doing overtime. And with three maidens at 1312m plus a 1531m maiden where half the field will want to find cover early, barriers and map matter more than the horse’s “pretty” finish last start.
That’s the lens for these Pinjarra racing tips. I’m leaning into runners that either (a) have shown they can sit close and keep finding, or (b) have drawn to make their own luck with a rider booking that screams intent. Course stats are thin for most of today’s horses, so I’m not going to pretend one visit here makes anyone a track horse. Where we do have meaningful Pinjarra evidence is through the riders and the bigger stables who run this place often.
You’ll get a straight opinion in each race, a danger that can beat it, and a clear staking call rather than ten “include in multiples” half-answers.
Pinjarra — the setup
We’re on the turf and the card reads like a typical Pinjarra program: big, messy maiden fields where position is currency. Across today’s races, genuine horse course records are limited, mostly one or two runs, so I’m treating those as context only. The more bankable local edge sits with the jockeys and the established yards that consistently place runners here.

Three jockeys on today’s card have the kind of Pinjarra volume where you can actually trust the percentages. Victoria Corver wins just under a third of her rides here and hits the frame a touch over half the time. Lucy Fiore and C Johnston-Porter ride this circuit as well as anyone, and their place rates reflect that.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Victoria Corver | 17 | 5 | 9 | 29.41 | 52.94 |
| Lucy Fiore | 67 | 7 | 29 | 10.45 | 43.28 |
| C Johnston-Porter | 62 | 7 | 23 | 11.29 | 37.10 |
Trainer-wise, three yards on the card bring a proper Pinjarra sample and keep putting money in your pocket when they target this meeting: S J Miller places three out of every four runners here, A G Durrant hits the frame nearly two-thirds of the time, and the Williams camp keep rolling winners through this track.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S J Miller | 16 | 5 | 12 | 31.25 | 75.00 |
| A G Durrant | 17 | 5 | 11 | 29.41 | 64.71 |
| G & A Williams | 27 | 7 | 15 | 25.93 | 55.56 |
Race-by-race
Race 1: Gjd Mdn — 12:25, 1312m
The contender angle is obvious here: Unwanted News has the best maiden profile in the race and the gate that lets it turn that profile into a plan. Form line of 7-3-2 says it’s getting closer every time, and from barrier 1 with Steven Parnham you don’t need luck, you just need the horse to run to its numbers.
This is the sort of Pinjarra 1312m maiden where plenty will drift back, want to be saved for one run, then complain about traffic. Unwanted News can sit closer than most, peel when it wants, and force the others to chase. The 3yo weight (123.4) also reads nicely against older maidens lugging more.
The danger is Win For Buster. P Harvey is a proven Pinjarra rider (15 rides here and he wins one in five), and this horse keeps putting itself in the race with that 29-429 profile. It’s not a flashy win machine, but it’s honest and it gives you a run for your money.
Staking: Win bet Unwanted News. Quinella saver with Win For Buster if you want protection against the Harvey ride.
Race 2: Electrical Consultancy Wa Mdn — 13:04, 1312m
This one starts as a question: how many times do you want to forgive a horse that keeps landing in the top three without getting the job done? You Can Call Me Al (2-26325) has been living in the money, and in a lot of maidens that profile becomes a trap for punters. Here, I think it’s actually the right anchor because the opposition is full of runners who either don’t finish off or haven’t shown enough to trust.
Rocky Cheung doesn’t have a strong Pinjarra strike (21 rides here and no wins), but that doesn’t scare me as much in a race where the horse’s pattern looks straightforward. If You Can Call Me Al holds a position from the middle draw (10), it can grind into the race and make it a staying contest from the 600m.
The fresh danger is Kentucky Drive. The form reads like a horse that gives you a sight every time (725235) and barrier 1 with Joey Azzopardi means it can either box-seat or lead if the race falls apart early. One run at Pinjarra is just a data point, but it didn’t scream “can’t handle the place”.
Staking: Each-way You Can Call Me Al. Small saver win Kentucky Drive if the market gives you a price and the map says it controls the rail.
Race 3: Tabtouch Same Race Multi Mdn — 13:42, 1312m
The shape is the story: a 3yo maiden over 1312m with plenty of runners who don’t look like they want to take control. That’s why I’m happy to be with Eightyseven Lad again. The form is as consistent as you’ll get in this grade (52542) and it’s a horse that keeps showing up for the fight late rather than throwing in the towel when the pressure comes.
Barrier 3 gives Natasha Faithfull a chance to ride it positively without spending petrol early. Faithfull’s Pinjarra numbers aren’t flattering over a big sample (43 rides here and she wins just under 7 percent), but this is more about the horse’s reliability than expecting a “magic” steer.
If you want the one with the class edge in the saddle, look at Pembeton with Steven Parnham. But the stable record here is the caution flag: N D Parnham has had 48 runners at Pinjarra for just the one win. That doesn’t mean the horse can’t win, it just tells you this yard doesn’t turn up here and dominate by default.
Staking: Win bet Eightyseven Lad. If you’re building a multi, Pembeton is the safer place leg than win play for me.

Race 4: Hygain Edge Mdn — 14:20, 1531m
The contrast makes it: Ocean Reef is the lightly raced type with upside, while Mystic Chaos is the seasoned maiden who keeps putting itself there. I’m siding with the upside.
Ocean Reef ran second on debut and now gets to stretch to 1531m, which is often where the debut placegetters get to turn “promising” into “winning”. Patrick Carbery has the Pinjarra mileage (23 rides for 4 wins) and he’s good at these races because he doesn’t panic from the 600m. Barrier 6 is clean and lets him find a midfield slot without giving away five lengths.
Mystic Chaos is the obvious danger because the horse’s recent form is the right shape for a maiden win (5-52742) and it has visited Pinjarra twice for a place and an average finish around the mid-threes. Two starts is still only a hint, but it does tell you the track doesn’t blunt it. If it gets the run, it can absolutely out-tough Ocean Reef late.
One more to keep safe in wider exotics if you’re playing trifectas: Lets Take A Chance. It placed on debut, Lucy Fiore is as reliable as they come around here, and that’s the kind of combo that can sneak a win if the top pair get too cute and ride for luck.
Staking: Win bet Ocean Reef. Exacta saver Ocean Reef with Mystic Chaos. If the market gets silly late, add a small place play Lets Take A Chance.
The plays
NAP: Unwanted News (Race 1, 12:25). Barrier 1 plus an improving 7-3-2 profile is exactly what you want in these Pinjarra 1312m maidens: forward, efficient, no excuses.
Value: Ocean Reef (Race 4, 14:20). The market often overreacts to the “experienced” maiden in this sort of race, but a debut second with natural improvement over further is the profile I’d rather be with.
Banker for multis: Eightyseven Lad (Race 3, 13:42) to run top three. It keeps turning up and it keeps being there when others fold.
Each-way play: You Can Call Me Al (Race 2, 13:04). If it runs another honest placing, you get paid, and if this is the day the race falls apart late, it can finally break through.
Course angle to keep using: when you see Lucy Fiore or C Johnston-Porter in these Pinjarra maidens, you’re not guessing about whether they can ride the circuit. They land runners in the right lanes and they make fewer “map” mistakes than most.
Next meeting, keep an eye on how often the inside draws control these 1300m maidens. If they keep walking and sprinting, you’ll want to be even more ruthless about backing the rail and laying the swoopers.
