Newmarket Handicap Runner-By-Runner Guide

Newmarket Handicap horses

The Newmarket Handicap sees the sprinters go down the famous Flemington straight and we take a look at the Newmarket Handicap horses.

Here is our runner-by-runner look at the Newmarket Handicap horses.

2021 Newmarket Handicap Horses

1. ZOUTORI $21
The Ellerton/Zahra galloper carries top weight of 57kg and wasn’t far behind Celebrity Queen in the Oakleigh Plate when 5th. He was 4th in the VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) behind Bivouac last year and will be competitive but a top three finish might just be out if his reach.

2. ELITE STREET $35
A winner of five from nine, the West Aussie failed to fire in the Lightning but did win the Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot last November ahead of the luckless Celebrity Queen. However, he is hard to have on his Lightning run.

3. IMAGING $19
Imaging drops in distance after fighting out the Orr Stakes (1400m) from Streets Of Avalon and was excellent over some slightly longer trips against some of the best last spring but needs to do it over the 1200m.

4. KEMALPASA $17
The South Aussie hit the line strongly when 3rd in the Oakleigh Plate and heads into this third up. He took out the Linlithgow Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day and with the right run he can feature in the finish.

5. CELEBRITY QUEEN $12
The West Australian might be the danger to September Run and defied what was perceived to be a bit of a slow lane when sneaking up on the inside to dead-heat wth Portland Sky in the recent Oakleigh Plate (1100m). She went 16.4 lengths faster than standard in that race, which is better than what any runner in this year’s Newmarket has produced in the past two years. Expect her to be in the finish.

6. DALASAN $26
A quality performer but will have to defy history by joining Redkirk Warrior as the only horse to win the Newmarket first up. Likely to need further.

7. FLIT $26
The sole Godolphin galloper, Flit took out the Silver Eagle (1300m) in the spring but not sure she has the class to match some of the favoured runners.

8. STANDOUT $46
Needs to lift after finishing 17th in the Oakleigh Plate and the form says no.

9. BOLD STAR $61
The five-year-old is better suited in slightly easier grade.

10. BROOKLYN HUSTLE $20
The unlucky galloper from the Oakleigh Plate, Brooklyn Hustle was 4th in that race after being held up but her form second up is a concern.

11. HALVORSEN $101
Will need to pull one out of the box like Lunar Fox in the Australian Guineas to win this.

12. INDIAN PACIFIC $26
The West Australian was solid when runner-up behind Fabergino in the Bob Hoystead last weekend and that horse wasn’t far away in the Lightning Stakes. Just not sure he has the class to match the big guns.

13. PROPHET’S THUMB $41
Prophets Thumb was excellent two starts ago when claiming victory at Caulfield but will struggle up in class and over the 1200m at Flemington.

14. SEPTEMBER RUN $2.30
The race favourite rocketed home to finish runner-up behind Nature Strip in the Lightning Stakes in what was just about the perfect trial for this race. The exciting filly from the Chris Waller stable improved to improve take out the Cap Dantibes Stakes (1100m) when second up at Flemington last sprint before claiming the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at the track and trip. Craig Williams rides and we can expect the pair to run over the top of them.

15. SIRIUS SUSPECT $15
The six-year-old absolutely loves the Flemington straight and should be in the race for a long way. He heads into this fresh and it is interesting to note he went16 lengths faster than standard when 3rd in the MSS Security Stakes (1200m) last spring when resuming. Those figures compares very well to the others in this race. He will push forward and gets his chance with Jamie Kah to ride.

16. AMISH BOY $46
Has finished runner-up over the 1400m at his past two starts with those efforts coming in the Autumn Stakes and the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas but not sure if those races are the ideal form reference for a Newmarket.

17. PRAGUE $41
The three-year-old from Warwick Farm will find this tough.

18. SWATS THAT $7.50
The filly from the Leon and Troy Corstens stable is as honest as they come and has finished just over a length behind September Run in the Lightning and the Coolmore Stud Stakes. She meets that horse 2kg better at the weights and is a definite top three contender.
