Stats Say Bowman To Continue Stellar Form
Hugh Bowman’s stellar run looks set to continue on Day 1 of The Championships this Saturday at Randwick.
Bowman has ridden nine winners from 25 rides at metropolitan level in NSW over the past month. The boy from Dunedoo boasts an outstanding strike rate of 36 per cent, an amazing feat given half of those metro races have been on major carnival days.
There are little signs that Bowman’s run looks to be stopping with the champion rider booting home four winners from 11 rides over the past week giving him a 7-day metro strike rate of 36.4 per cent.
But one obstacle Bowman must overcome is his Randwick record over the past 12 months. To be fair, by most jockeys’ standards the 20 wins at 14 per cent is at the very least a sound record at Sydney’s premier track but for Bowman Randwick provides his worst metro stats in the harbour city.
His 20 wins places him third behind James McDonald [29] and Tommy Berry [22] for the 365 day period and his strike of 14 per cent is the lowest at Sydney’s four metropolitan tracks trailing behind Canterbury 25 per cent, Rosehill and Warwick Farm both at 19 per cent.
Bowman rides surprise Newmarket Handicap winner Roch N Horse in the TJ Smith Stakes for Flemington trainer Mike Moroney. The stable has been in rare form striking at 20 per cent for the past 60 days in Victoria, a significant shift over a sustained period from their usual 14 per cent.
For McDonald, he not only boasts the most wins at Randwick over the past year but also the best strike rate with the Kiwi gun booting home winners at 25 per cent.
John O’Shea has the best winning strike rate at Randwick of any trainer heading to Day 1 of The Championships. The local horseman has posted 14 winners from 68 starters striking at 21 per cent during the last year.
