Belmont Park Racing Tips 17 June — can Fernie land a double?
Luke Fernie doesn’t need an invitation at Belmont Park, he turns up and expects to be competitive. He brings a small but pointed hand to the meeting, and the numbers at this track back the confidence: 21 runners here for 6 wins and 11 placings, so you’re not guessing when you side with his camp.
This Belmont Park set runs across six races on turf, with a couple of tricky maidens early and two races in the middle of the program that look like the best betting lanes. You’ll get straight opinions, a clear main play, and a couple of places where I’d rather keep the wallet closed. Belmont Park racing tips should feel like you’ve had the form explained, not read back to you.
Belmont Park — the setup
Going and rail info weren’t provided in the feed, so I’m treating this as a standard Belmont Park turf day and leaning on map and intent rather than trying to be cute with track pattern calls.
Course form is thin among the horses themselves, a lot of these have only one or two Belmont runs logged, so it’s more useful today to lean on the people who keep coming here and striking: riders with volume, and stables that repeatedly place their horses well.

Race-by-race
Race 1: Drummond Golf Mdn — 12:25, 1312m
The market will probably try to bully this with the new names, but I’m happy to start with the one who’s actually been to the races. Free Ride has the only exposed form line in the field that reads like a horse learning on the job (5-5), and that matters in a 2yo event over 1312m where raw speed alone doesn’t always save you late.
Barrier 2 is a gift for C Johnston-Porter. He can hold a spot without burning petrol, and that’s usually half the battle for babies at Belmont. Luke Fernie is the other big tick. He places horses well here and he doesn’t need many shots to land a winner, six wins from 21 Belmont runners is a proper record, not a vibe.
The danger is Violet Victory from gate 1. Debutants drawn to control the inside can make you look silly if they jump cleanly and relax, and Laqdar Ramoly can pinch a cheap lead when others hesitate.
Play: Win bet Free Ride. Small saver quinella with Violet Victory if you want insurance against the rails-run debutant.
Race 2: Glenroy Chaff (Rs0ly) — 13:00, 1094m
Here’s the question that decides the race: do you trust the class edge, or do you demand the map edge? I’m landing on class. Flash Dancer brings the best overall profile on paper (24810-) and gets Steven Parnham, which reads like a stable saying “we’re here to win”, not “we’re here for a hit-out”.
The catch is gate 8 over 1094m. If he does any work early, he invites something to stalk and out-sprint him late. That’s why I’m keeping the staking sensible, but he still looks the horse with the ceiling.
Sunset Session is the danger because barrier 1 can turn a plain form line into a winning run at this trip. If Johnston-Porter holds the fence and gets the right split, you’ll feel it in the last 100m when Flash Dancer is trying to sustain from the outside.
Play: Flash Dancer to win, but keep it to a standard stake. Exacta Flash Dancer over Sunset Session if you play exotics.
Race 3: Morley Growers Market Mdn — 13:35, 1804m
This is the first proper staying maiden, and it looks like a race where intent matters more than flash. Bend It Like Becks has the clear upward arc: two starts for a 3rd then a 2nd, and now she steps to 1804m which should suit a horse that’s already shown she can stick at it.
Holly Nottle is a big push. She rides Belmont as well as anyone in this room: 65 rides here for 13 wins and 30 placings, so when she’s on a progressive type, you take note. The slight sting is gate 15. She’ll need to make a call early, either slide across with cover or go right back and trust the tempo.
The danger is Cannotstop, the grinder who keeps turning up and being around the money (5-424). If this becomes a sit-and-sprint and the swoopers can’t get into it from wide alleys, his fitness and toughness can carry him.
Play: Each-way Bend It Like Becks. If you hate the draw, switch to a place-only bet and live with the result.
Race 4: Quayclean Hcp (C1) — 14:10, 1094m
This is the best betting race on the card because the map and the recent win point the same way. Busy Fingers comes off a win (2345-1), carries the top weight, and yes, it’s only one run at Belmont, but he won on his only start here. More importantly, this looks like the sort of C1 sprint where the winner often comes from the first handful turning for home.
Lucy Fiore rides and she’s reliable at this venue: 60 Belmont rides for 5 wins and 20 placings. That’s a rider who can handle the timing of these short races without panicking.
The main threat is Solar Chant from gate 1 with Brad Parnham. She has placed on her only Belmont run and the 05-122 form line says she’s right in the zone. If Busy Fingers gets softened up or has to do early work from barrier 10, Solar Chant can be the one who gets the cheap run and the last crack.
Play: Win bet Busy Fingers. Saver exacta Busy Fingers and Solar Chant. This is the race I’d build around in multis.

Race 5: Unite Resourcing (Bm54+) — 14:57, 2297m
The market usually overcomplicates these 2300m Belmont races, but the answer often sits with the stable that repeatedly places horses well here. I’m with Alcabeel as the “forgive and forget” runner. He has one Belmont run on file and it was ugly, but that’s a single data point, not a label. The bigger driver is Fernie’s overall Belmont strike and the soft-ish gate (1) for a staying race where position is currency.
From barrier 1 Johnston-Porter can hold a spot, get him breathing, and make others go around. If he’s anywhere near his best, he’s going to be hard to pass when they’re under pressure late.
The danger is All Laced Up, who looks like the horse that can control his own luck. He’s a last-start winner (44-416), drawn to be in the first half, and he doesn’t need to improve much to be right in it.
Play: Win bet Alcabeel with an each-way saver on All Laced Up if prices allow. If Alcabeel drifts alarmingly late, treat it as a watch race.
Race 6: Unite Resourcing (Bm54+) — 14:57, 2297m (continued runners listed)
The deeper you go into this field, the more it becomes a test of who actually wants 2297m. Sister Mary is the one I want onside for a small-value play because she arrives off a confidence win (0-0551) and draws gate 2, which keeps the run clean and uncomplicated.
Icandoit Onmyown is the blow-in that can ruin the day for the favourite backers if the tempo is wrong. He’s had three goes at Belmont for two placings, so he clearly copes with the track, and those are the types that can keep coming when others are feeling it.
Play: Small each-way Sister Mary. If you’ve already anchored a multi in Race 4, keep this leg conservative or leave it out entirely.
The plays
NAP: Busy Fingers (Race 4, 14:10). He brings winning momentum, and while his Belmont record is only one run, he did win that run and the race shape looks right for him to be in the fight all the way.
Value: Bend It Like Becks (Race 3, 13:35) each-way. The 3rd then 2nd progression is the cleanest “maiden about to win” profile on the card, and Holly Nottle’s Belmont record, 13 wins and 30 placings from 65 rides, is exactly the type of rider edge I like to pay for.
Banker: Busy Fingers for multis. If you only take one safer stance all day, take it there.
Each-way: Bend It Like Becks again. Wide draw is the only reason it’s not a straight-out best bet.
Course angle: Don’t ignore Luke Fernie at this track, 6 winners from 21 runners at Belmont Park with more than half of them landing in the money. When his horses draw to get economical runs, they tend to overperform market expectation.
Keep an eye on how often riders can cross from wide alleys in the 1800m maiden today, it’ll shape the way you bet these staying maidens at Belmont next time the same pattern rolls around.
