Bendigo Racing Tips 13 May — can the Hayes trio own it again?
Opening
The loudest message on this Bendigo card isn’t a single “good thing”, it’s a pattern: Ben, Will and JD Hayes keep turning up here and they keep getting paid. They’ve had 13 runners at Bendigo for 3 wins and 8 placings, which is the kind of volume where you can stop calling it noise and start calling it intent.
That matters today because they don’t just have a runner, they’ve got hands in multiple races and they’ve booked the right riders around them. So these Bendigo racing tips are built around one question: do you want to fight the stable that keeps landing on its feet at this track, or do you want to ride with it and make the rest beat you?
We’ve got four races on turf, all maidens, with three of them around the 1200 to 1400m mark where barrier and early intent decide more than most punters admit. I’ll go race by race with a clear pick, one danger, and what I’d actually do with the stake.
Bendigo – the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two Bendigo starts at most, so I’m treating track stats as a hint rather than a map.
Where there is something to lean on today is the people: the Hayes trio are a genuine Bendigo angle on meaningful volume, and a couple of jockeys have enough rides here to trust their strike rates.

Race-by-race – Bendigo predictions
Race 1: Clubarham Mdn Plate — 12:25, 1422m
Zephyr Song is the one I want to be with early. She’s got the only clearly progressive form line in the racecard (424), and with Jordan Childs engaged she looks like the runner who can land in the first half, breathe, and still have a kick when the rest start to wobble.
This is a 3YO-only maiden over 1422m, which is often where a few try to win it at the 600m and the ones without a turn of foot get found out late. Zephyr Song’s pattern reads like she keeps putting herself in the fight without getting the perfect break yet. Today looks a clean chance to convert that consistency into a result.
The obvious danger is The Alpina Penguin from gate 1 for the Hayes stable. In races like this, inside draw plus a yard that places plenty of Bendigo runners can be enough to steal it if the tempo stays moderate and they control the spots.
Play: Win bet Zephyr Song. Small saver on The Alpina Penguin if the market lets you back both without getting silly.
Race 2: HJ Miller Electrical Mdn Plate — 13:00, 1422m
Here’s the puzzle: do you take the race-fit improver with the big-name jockey booking, or do you side with the stable runner who might just be better than the market can price first-up?
I’m leaning to Kandinsky. The form (4-2) says he’s already close enough, and when Mark Zahra turns up for a maiden at Bendigo you should assume the horse can actually run. He’s drawn 5, carries 131.1, and that’s a nice “ride it like a proper horse” setup rather than a desperate steer from the carpark.
On the numbers we have, Kandinsky has had one run in the last 90 days and he placed in it. One run isn’t a trend, but it tells you he’s not coming off a long, dusty spell wondering what race day feels like.
The danger is Harbour Town for Ben, Will and JD Hayes with Craig Williams aboard. Williams has only ridden once at Bendigo in this data slice but he won that ride, and while that’s just a single data point, it lines up with what you already know about him: he doesn’t waste good mounts. Draw 3 gives him options.
Play: Win bet Kandinsky. Exacta box with Harbour Town if you want something extra.
Race 3: Cathcart Smash Repairs Mdn Plate — 13:35, 1094m
This is the kind of 2YO maiden where the map matters more than your favourite pedigree theory. With 18 runners and a short dash (1094m), you want a horse that either lands handy without spending, or one that can absorb pressure and still run through the line.
I’m siding with Oceans Blue because Craig Williams takes the ride from gate 2. In big juvenile fields, that’s often the difference between being a chance and being a victim. He can hold a spot, avoid the mid-race bumping, and make one run. If Oceans Blue has any talent, he gets every chance to show it.
Right Aclaim is the danger. Ciaron Maher has a pair in the race and he’s not shy about running them where they can win, plus Thomas Stockdale has enough Bendigo rides (6) to trust that he usually puts them in the right spots. Barrier 9 isn’t perfect in a stampede, but if the speed collapses a touch, that middle draw can be a blessing.
Play: Each-way Oceans Blue. This race can turn messy quickly, so I’d rather get paid for being right without needing it to be a parade.
Race 4: Ross Caldwell Plumbing Mdn Plate — 14:10, 1203m
The market will try to talk you into this being complicated. I don’t think it is.
Varadero profiles like the best bet on the meeting. He’s already run second, he draws 7 which is workable in a 1203m maiden, and he gets Luke Currie, who can ride these Bendigo sprints without panicking at the first bit of heat.
Varadero has only had one run in the last 90 days in this data set, but he placed, and that’s the sort of recent pointer I want in a maiden: he’s in the game now, not “building toward” being in the game.
The main danger is Gathers No Stone, the older grinder who keeps turning up around the money (342343). The knock is the same as always with these types: they give you every chance to back them and then find one slightly sharper late. If this is genuinely run and the young ones over-race, he’s the one who can take advantage.

Play: Win bet Varadero. If you’re playing multiples, he’s the banker leg. Keep Gathers No Stone for a quinella saver if the price is right.
The plays
NAP: Varadero (Race 4, 14:10). Second on debut and lands in the sweet spot for a Bendigo maiden: enough pace in the race to bring his finish into it, without needing a miracle map.
Value: Oceans Blue (Race 3, 13:35) each-way. Two-year-old races are chaos, so I’d rather be paid for a place if Williams can keep him out of trouble from gate 2.
Banker for multis: Varadero again. It’s not sexy, it’s just the cleanest profile on a card full of unknown ceilings.
Each-way angle: Oceans Blue, for the same reason. Big field, short trip, good draw, and a rider who doesn’t give away cheap lengths.
Course angle: If you’re hunting a stable to follow at Bendigo, keep siding with Ben, Will and JD Hayes when they bring multiple runners. Thirteen runners here for 3 wins and 8 placings isn’t a drive-by.
Next time you see a Bendigo maiden with a Hayes runner drawn to get cover, don’t overthink it. Make the rest beat you.

Where can I find the best Bendigo odds?
Shop around with the corporates and the tote before you bet. For this meeting, live Bendigo odds weren’t available in the feed at time of writing, so I’d treat early fixed prices carefully and be ready to move if the market firms late.
