Mornington Tips 22/4/2223
BEST BET 🏆 (WIN)
Race 9 No. 11 MAKTOOB- ($2.65)
Going with MAKTOOB in the final race of the day at Sandown. The imported galloper has settled well into Australia and is unbeaten in his two starts here. He stepped out at the Sandown Lakeside circuit on April 10 and was strong at the business end to defeat Royal Hard Hat. The four-year-old was a three length Pakenham winner prior to that. At his most recent start he went a very healthy 6.8 lengths faster than standard benchmark. Blake Shinn rides and will tuck in just behind them from barrier 2.
NEXT BEST 🥈(EACH-WAY)
Race 4 No 9 TOBAYSURE- ($8)
This looks to be a winnable assignment for TOBAYSURE. The Philip Stokes-trained galloper was a BenchMark 64 winner at Sale over the 1717m two starts ago before tackling the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Heath (2100m) last weekend and running 3rd behind El Patroness. He is on the short back up but that form reads very well for this and the son of Cable Bay went a healthy 8.9 lengths faster than standard last time. He just needs to produce something similar to take this one out.
BEST VALUE 💰(EACH-WAY)
Race 6 No.2 GRAND PIERRO – ($9.60)
GRAND PIERRO shapes as a solid player in the Mornington Guineas. The Jason Warren-trained galloper has had just the one run this time in and that came over the 1400m at Flemington back on March 11. He settled back in the field that day before working home well for 4th behind Meridius in what was a strong return. The Geelong Classic (2200m) winner from the spring needs to do it without a run in six weeks but he will no doubt appreciate the step up to the 1600m, while he will be ridden by Craig Williams.
