Bunbury Racing Tips 15 July — can Wolfe land the feature?
Bunbury Racing Tips 15 July — can Wolfe land the feature?
The most reliable clue on this Bunbury card isn’t hidden in a sectional graph or a trial whisper. It’s sitting in plain sight: Unfortunate Lad has already won at the track, and in a meeting full of lightly-raced types and short-course chaos, that sort of proof matters. Not because two runs makes him a “Bunbury specialist” (it doesn’t), but because it tells you he can handle the bends, the kick, and the way these sprint races so often turn into a positional knife fight.
We’ve got three races on turf, all sprints, and two of them are maidens that look like they’ll be decided by who finds the front or who gets the cleanest lane at the 250m. These Bunbury racing tips lean into that reality: barriers, intent from the jockey booking, and whether the horse has shown it can hold a spot. If you want Bunbury predictions you can actually bet around, read on. If you want certainty in 2yo maidens, take a long walk and enjoy the sea air.
Bunbury — the setup
All three races are on turf and all three are short. That usually means two things: (1) you need to respect gate speed, and (2) you need to be wary of horses forced to go back and circle the field, because they’re often spotting a winning break if the leaders get a breather.
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners either haven’t been to Bunbury or have only one or two starts here, so I’m treating track stats as seasoning rather than the main meal.
One thing that is meaningful: a handful of riders have a proper Bunbury sample. Sorted by place rate, here are the jockeys with at least five rides at the track.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lucy Fiore | 49 | 7 | 22 | 14.29 | 44.90 |

Race-by-race Bunbury predictions
Race 1: Tabtouch Download Today Mdn — 13:04, 1203m
The market will probably try to bully you into picking a “best of the exposed” here, but I’m leaning to the horse who’s already shown a bit of sharpness on debut and gets the right draw to ride the rail: Miss Bradley (gate 1) is my pick to win. In 2yo sprints, I want the horse that can hold a spot without burning petrol, and barrier one gives Brayden Gaerth the simplest map on the page.
There’s speed drawn around her, but not an obvious tearaway that guarantees a meltdown. If they run along evenly, the inside pair can control the race shape and make it hard for the wide-drawn first starters to get into a rhythm.
The danger is Crocs (gate 12). He’s already run third (form “3”) and that’s the one piece of proper evidence in this field. The knock is the alley: from out there, Holly Watson either has to punch across early or snag back and hope gaps appear. Either way, she’s making decisions at the 900m, not the 200m.
Staking: Win bet Miss Bradley. Small saver quinella with Crocs if you like cover in a 2yo race.
Race 2: Cuprum Distillery Mdn — 13:39, 1094m
This is a proper Bunbury sprint puzzle: plenty of these have had enough chances to be annoying, but there are two that keep putting themselves in the finish and that’s usually where you want your money.
I’m with Sunset Session (gate 8). The form line “29-522” tells you exactly what you need to know: he’s gone from making up numbers to running like a horse that’s found his level and now wants to break through. He also gets C Johnston-Porter, who rides Bunbury well on volume and usually keeps these types out of trouble. Over the last 90 days he’s gone around twice and placed both times, with an average finish of second. That’s not a fluke, that’s a horse sitting on the win.
Bubbles In Rio is the danger and the most likely to make you look silly for getting cute. The form “6422-2” is as honest as it gets and he’s drawn to be in the first wave (gate 10 is workable in a smallish sprint field if you roll forward). I can’t dress him up with recent-stats help today, but the profile screams “again runs top three”.
Staking: Each-way Sunset Session. If you’re a straight bettor, play him win and save on Bubbles In Rio in exactas.
Race 3: Prince Of Wales Hotel Bunbury Hcp (C1) — 14:14, 1094m
Here’s the betting race on the card because you can actually build a map and the form has some teeth. I’m taking a stand with Unfortunate Lad (gate 1). He’s the one runner in this field who’s already won at Bunbury, and he’s done it from two visits. That’s not enough to call him anything fancy, but it is enough to say he handles the place. More importantly, the inside draw lets S McGruddy put him in the fight from step one, and McGruddy is a rider you can trust around here: 16 rides at the track for three wins and six placings.
The big reason I want him today is control. From barrier one, he either leads or sits behind the lead with the fence as his friend. In 1094m handicaps, that’s often the whole story.
Earl It Is (gate 2) is the danger and the more interesting “course angle” horse. He’s had three goes at Bunbury for a win and two placings, which is an emerging pattern, not a lifelong romance. If he lands one-one from gate two, he’s the one most likely to make the favourite earn it late. Jefferson Tsang on Dark Avalanche also deserves a mention: Tsang hasn’t won here from 12 rides but he hits the frame often, placing in half of them. If the race turns into a sit-sprint, he can pinch a cheque again.

Staking: Win bet Unfortunate Lad. Save exacta Unfortunate Lad with Earl It Is.
The plays
NAP: Unfortunate Lad (Race 3, 14:14). Two Bunbury runs for a win tells me he handles the quirks of the track, and gate one lets McGruddy keep it brutally simple: hold position, kick, make them run you down.
Value: Sunset Session (Race 2, 13:39) as an each-way play. He’s been trending the right way across his last three starts and Johnston-Porter is a sensible booking for a horse that needs timing more than brute force.
Banker for multis: Sunset Session to place. Two placings from two runs in the last 90 days is exactly the profile you want when you’re trying to survive maidens.
Each-way: Earl It Is (Race 3). Three goes at Bunbury for a win and two placings is enough to respect, especially from gate two.
Course angle: If you’re following jockeys rather than horses, Lucy Fiore is the rider with the deepest Bunbury book today and she hits the frame often here. When you see her land soft runs from decent gates, take notice.
Next time Bunbury throws up a similar set of short sprints, keep leaning into barriers and riders you trust here. This track doesn’t always reward the “best horse”, it rewards the horse that gets to use its speed efficiently.
