Doomben Racing Tips 17 June — can the course winners repeat?
There’s a little tell on this Doomben card that I always respect: three of the key three-year-olds later in the day have already won here, and they don’t land in soft races. That matters, because Doomben can be a funny place when you’re still learning your craft. It’s not just about speed; it’s about holding a position, cornering cleanly, and not getting lost when the pressure comes on from the 600m.
So today’s Doomben meeting (turf) is a mix of unknowns early and proper betting races late. Two juvenile maidens to kick it off (always a dose of humility), then the card starts to behave: a 1476m maiden where the fit, building types can take control, then a small Bm70, and finally a 3yo Bm65 that has genuine edges if you trust track experience. These Doomben racing tips are written like you’d want them from a mate: straight opinions, the reasoning that actually matters, and clear plays.
Doomben — the setup
Going info isn’t provided in the racecard, so I’m reading this meeting through what we can hang our hat on: barriers, weights, and who has already handled Doomben’s ask.
Limited deep course form across today’s fields. Outside of a handful of runners with three or more Doomben starts, most are still in the “one run here” bucket. Treat those single-run records as a note, not a prophecy.

If you want one course angle you can actually use today, it’s this: the jockeys with meaningful volume here are Ben Thompson (98 rides), Ryan Maloney (59), and M Rodd (36). Thompson wins often enough to respect, and he lands on key chances across multiple races. Maloney rides Doomben like he’s got a map in his glove. Rodd is the rider you want when a race needs timing, not just tempo.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ben Thompson | 98 | 15 | 40 | 15.31 | 40.82 |
| Ryan Maloney | 59 | 9 | 22 | 15.25 | 37.29 |
| M Rodd | 36 | 7 | 14 | 19.44 | 38.89 |
| Jag Guthmann-Chester | 37 | 5 | 14 | 13.51 | 37.84 |
| Martin Harley | 27 | 3 | 14 | 11.11 | 51.85 |
Trainer-wise, the volume and strike come from the usual Brisbane forces. T J Gollan has the big sample here (157 runners) and keeps his horses competitive at this circuit, and Chris and Corey Munce are not far behind for impact with 57 runners. Those are the stables you should assume have a plan when they place one at Doomben.
| Trainer | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| T J Gollan | 157 | 25 | 75 | 15.92 | 47.77 |
| Chris & Corey Munce | 57 | 11 | 19 | 19.30 | 33.33 |
| R L Heathcote | 64 | 9 | 24 | 14.06 | 37.50 |
| K M Schweida | 49 | 6 | 17 | 12.24 | 34.69 |
| Matthew Hoysted | 27 | 6 | 15 | 22.22 | 55.56 |
Race-by-race — Doomben predictions
Race 1: The Gibson Mdn Plate — 12:32, 1312m
Pretty Smashing (gate 1) is the one I want to be with straight away. In a 2yo maiden where half the field is guessing, a filly with exposed ability and the inside draw is gold. She comes here off a debut second and she gets Ben Thompson, who rides Doomben as well as anyone on this card. From barrier one, Thompson doesn’t need to be cute: hold a spot, save ground, and make them come around you.
The danger is Seagoe (gate 2). The barrier keeps her in the fight, and the Freedman camp doesn’t waste trips with youngsters. She ran fifth last time, but that’s often the run that sets them up for the jump to a placing when they learn what racing pressure feels like.
I’ll also respect Adora Djon’s (gate 4) as a knockout hope. The form string reads 5-55, which isn’t pretty, but it screams “keeps finding one or two better”. If the favourite gets into traffic, she can be the one landing late into the minors.
Play: Win bet Pretty Smashing. Small saver quinella with Seagoe if you want a cover angle.
Race 2: Become A Brc Member Mdn Plate — 13:07, 1312m
Here’s the question that matters: how much do you trust the stable that’s everywhere? K M Schweida throws several at these early races, and the one that makes the most sense on map alone is New Mexico (gate 4) with R Dolan. A soft draw at Doomben in a juvenile maiden can be the difference between a clean run and a lesson.
But if I’m betting, I want a horse who doesn’t need everything to fall perfectly. Nozomu (form 53-5, gate 9) has at least shown he can compete. He’s had enough racing to understand the job, and that usually counts for plenty against raw debutants. He gets N Tomizawa, who doesn’t have a big Doomben sample (two rides here), but has at least placed once at the track. Small sample, just a note.
The danger is Submarine Mission (gate 1). Barrier one gives him first use of the rail, and Peter Robl is a trainer I’ll keep onside at this meeting: three runners at Doomben in the database and one has won. Again, that’s not a trend, but it’s not nothing either.
Play: Watch race if the market is wild. If you must, each-way Nozomu and save on Submarine Mission for the map.
Race 3: Sky Racing Mdn Plate — 13:42, 1476m
The shape looks like it’ll suit something that can take a position and sustain. Over 1476m at Doomben, you don’t want to be spotting the leaders a stack if the tempo drops mid-race. That pushes me toward Arctic Bright (gate 8). The form line 454332 is the profile of a horse knocking the door down, and she’s already placed on her only start at Doomben. That’s a single visit, so don’t overcook it, but it tells you she handles the circuit.
Iconify (gate 11) is the obvious danger. He’s from Gollan, who places nearly half his runners at this track across a proper sample. Iconify’s course run was a fourth, so he’s not coming in as a “Doomben horse”, but he’s capable and he’s the type that can improve sharply when the stable finds the right race.
If you want something a bit different for exotics, Had It All (gate 5) is worth a look. He placed on his only Doomben run and draws to get every chance to repeat that effort without needing to be a superstar.
Play: Win bet Arctic Bright. Exacta saver with Iconify.
Race 4: Cricks Highway (Bm70) — 14:18, 1312m
This is the first race on the card where I’m happy to have a firmer opinion. Nepravda (gate 1) gets the perfect setup: inside draw, M Rodd, and a form line that says she’s right at her peak (26-372). Rodd rides this track with enough patience to make barrier one a weapon rather than a trap. If he holds the rail and pops at the right time, they’ll need to be good to get past her.
The danger is Flying Shelly (gate 7). She comes off a win (2981), and while Kyle Wilson-Taylor doesn’t win often at Doomben on a big sample, he does hit the frame often enough to trust him to give her every chance. The risk with Flying Shelly is simple: gate seven can force a mid-track run, and Doomben can punish that if the tempo gets awkward.
Keep She Ours (gate 2) in mind as the annoyance horse. The draw is kind, and if she finds the back of Nepravda and sees daylight late, she can steal a placing at a price.
Play: Win bet Nepravda. If you’re playing safer, win-plus-place style staking suits her map.
Race 5: Drinkwise (Bm65) — 14:53, 1312m
The market will likely gravitate to the lightly-raced types, but I’m siding with the horse who’s already proven he can do it at Doomben: Strike Weapon (gate 9). He won on his only start here, and that matters more than a pile of theoretical upside when you’re trying to win a midweek handicap. He’s also coming in with a form line that screams consistency (6-10622). If he repeats anything like those last two runs, he’s right in the finish again.
And this is also the best betting race on the card because the dangers are readable, not mysterious. American Conquest (gate 7, form 1-64341) brings a proper profile and doesn’t look like a horse that needs luck. If he lands midfield with cover, he can be the one sweeping over the top.
Illegal Justice (gate 13, form 61) is the boom horse, and yes, he’s also won on his only Doomben run. The issue is the gate. Barrier 13 over 1312m at Doomben can force you into a decision early, and those decisions cost lengths.

Play: Win bet Strike Weapon. Saver win bet American Conquest if the price holds. I’m happy to risk Illegal Justice as the “too hard from the carpark” runner unless the market overreacts and hands you value.
The plays
NAP: Strike Weapon (Race 5, 14:53). He’s already handled Doomben by winning here, and his recent form reads like a horse that keeps turning up and running to a level. In this grade, reliability is an edge.
Value look: Arctic Bright (Race 3, 13:42). The form line 454332 is the kind you can bet into because it keeps telling the same story. If she’s not favourite, I’ll be interested.
Banker for multis: Nepravda (Race 4, 14:18). Barrier one plus Rodd is the sort of combination that removes excuses. You’re buying a run, not a hope.
Each-way angle: Nozomu (Race 2, 13:07). Juvenile maidens can punish confidence, so I’d rather be paid for the place if he runs up to his prior form.
Course angle to keep using: when the race is messy, lean on the Doomben riders with volume. Thompson and Maloney get enough turns here to consistently make good decisions under pressure, and that’s worth a length in these midweek races.
If the late races keep rewarding horses with a prior Doomben win, take note for the next meeting: this track quietly favours runners who already know how to corner and keep rolling.
