Eagle Farm Racing Tips 2 May 2026 — can Gollan run the table early?

There’s a very specific Eagle Farm story early on this card: T J Gollan rolls in with three live chances across the first race alone, and the map says he can control the terms if the others let him. That’s the sort of meeting where you either lean into the stable momentum or you get paid by opposing it when the tempo turns ugly.

You’ve only got two races here (12:03 and 12:38) on the Eagle Farm turf, but they’re different problems. The opener is a busy 1312m BM70 with a stack of runners who want similar spots. The staying race at 2406m is where barrier and intent matters even more because nobody wants to make the first move at Eagle Farm unless they have to.

I’ve kept these Eagle Farm racing tips practical: who I’d back, who can beat them, and where I’d either press or pass.

Eagle Farm — the setup

We don’t have going listed in the feed, so I’m treating this as a standard Eagle Farm big-track day: long run-ins, time to build momentum, and wide draws that aren’t automatically death if the speed’s honest.

Course form is thin for most of today’s runners. A lot of them have one or two looks here, which is a data point, not a trend. The few that do have a bit of history are worth flagging though, because Eagle Farm can expose horses that don’t sustain a long run.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Ben Thompson 66 16 36 24.24% 54.55%
Ryan Maloney 45 5 24 11.11% 53.33%
Jace Mcmurray 46 7 23 15.22% 50.00%

T J Gollan 134 21 64 15.67% 47.76%
C Maher 26 4 14 15.38% 53.85%
R L Heathcote 56 8 18 14.29% 32.14%

A quick rider note for punters who like following patterns: Thompson wins just under a quarter of his rides here and hits the frame more often than not. Maloney is less about wins, more about being in the finish. That matters in these mid-grade handicaps when the race gets messy and positioning wins you two lengths.

Race-by-race

Race 1: Ladbrokes Stradbroke Calcutta Book Now (Bm70) — 12:03, 1312m

Zoufani gets me early because the setup looks kind to a horse that can hold a spot and keep building from the 600m. Gate 1 gives Cejay Graham options, and in a field with plenty drawn awkwardly he’s the one most likely to get the run without spending. The form line (3-8232) reads like a horse knocking on the door rather than one fluking a placing.

There’s also a nice little Eagle Farm note: Zoufani has placed on its only start here. One run isn’t a pattern, but it tells you the horse handles the track and that’s worth something in these high-traffic races.

The danger is the obvious stable shadow: Time Of My Life (Tim Clark) comes off a last-start win (2-1081), and the Gollan yard’s Eagle Farm numbers are strong enough to respect without getting cute. From barrier 5 he lands in the first half with cover and gets his chance to repeat the dose.

If you want the blow-up horse, Bring Me Saki (form 431) has upside and might be the one the market misses simply because it’s stepping into a deeper BM70 from a wide gate (13). If Morgan finds the back of the right runner early, you’ll see it late.

Play: Win bet Zoufani. Small saver on Time Of My Life if you’re building a quaddie style position, because the stable can absolutely bully these races when they’re set up to.

Race 2: Moreton Hire (Bm78) — 12:38, 2406m

The question here is simple: who’s going to control the stamina test without turning it into a sit-and-sprint? If they crawl, you want the horse that can dash. If they roll along, you want the one that can keep finding late. I’m leaning to the horse that can absorb either scenario.

Prochester is the one I want. Barrier 1 at 2406m is a weapon, Ben Thompson is the strongest jockey profile on this track among today’s riders, and the horse has a very clean Eagle Farm resume: placed in both visits here. That’s the kind of “turn up and run well” profile I trust when the race shape gets tactical.

The recent-results snapshot is also what you want for a staying handicapper: in its last 90 days it’s gone three runs for three placings (average finish 2.67). It hasn’t won in that window, but it keeps putting itself in the finish, and that consistency matters more than a flashy last-start spike over this trip.

The main threat is Autumn Winter. Two wins in the last four starts (0/4611) says confidence, and Maloney is a proper “get them into the contest” rider here. From gate 2 he’s likely to park just behind the lead or even take it up if nobody wants it, and that can make the race feel very long for closers.

I’ll also keep an eye on Just Flying, but more as a place hope than a win play. Five runs at Eagle Farm for one placing is genuine history, and it suggests the track doesn’t hand out gifts to this horse. It can run well, but it needs the day to go right.

Play: Prochester each-way, or win if the market drifts. I’d rather be paid for the map advantage and the “always thereabouts” profile than take short odds about a stayer in a tactical BM78.

The plays

If you’re betting the meeting rather than just having an opinion, I’d anchor around the staying race. Prochester is the bet I’d build around because it gets the inside draw, a jockey who rides Eagle Farm as well as anyone on this card (Ben Thompson), and it has already proven it can run a race here with two course visits for two placings. That’s a cleaner base than most of these.

NAP: Prochester (Race 2, 12:38) each-way. The profile screams “in the first three again”.

Value: Zoufani (Race 1, 12:03) if the market underestimates how big gate 1 is in a crowded 1312m handicap.

Banker for multis: Prochester top 3 style legs if your book offers it. It’s the safest runner on the page.

Each-way play: Prochester again, simply because the recent 90-day run says it keeps showing up when the pressure comes on.

Course angle: When Thompson rides one from a soft gate at Eagle Farm, I follow. His strike rate here is real volume, not a couple of lucky Saturdays.

Keep one note for next time: if Gollan’s trio in the opener all run well again off those barriers, you’ll want to be early to the stable runners on this track through winter.
