Gosford Racing Tips 28 May — is Charlina the real deal?

Racingbase Staff Racingbase Staff

Charlina walks into Gosford with the one thing most of these fields don’t: proof she handles this track. She’s won on her only start here, and while one run isn’t a trend, it’s a lot more than guesswork on a midweek where plenty are still learning their craft. Add in a card stacked with lightly raced 3YOs, a couple of big stables making purposeful rider choices, and a few races where barriers will decide who gets the cheap run, and you’ve got a meeting that rewards punters who pick their spots.

These Gosford racing tips cover eight races on turf, with a mix of short sprints and two key 1750m events that look like the best form races on the program. I’ll keep it opinionated: where I’m betting, where I’m saving, and where I’m happy to watch and learn for next start.

Gosford — the setup

Gosford today looks like a meeting where rider familiarity matters more than most. There isn’t a deep bank of horse track specialists across the fields (most have one or two visits), so I’m leaning harder on jockey and stable patterns at this venue, plus barriers and race shape in the smaller sprints.

On the jockey front, there are a few you can actually trust here on volume. Tommy Berry wins half his rides at Gosford from a small-but-usable sample (6 rides, 3 wins). Rachel King wins a third of her rides here (15 rides, 5 wins) and hits the frame more often than not. K S Latham also turns up and puts them into races, with 15 rides for 4 wins and 9 placings. J R Collett is the “safe hands” profile: he places seven of his ten Gosford rides, which is exactly what you want when the map matters.

Tommy Berry 6 3 3 50.0 50.0

Trainer-wise, two stables jump out on proper sample sizes. Nacim Dilmi wins 4 of 10 at Gosford and places 7 of 10, and Nathan Doyle is even stronger for consistency, placing 7 of 8 here with 3 wins. Chris Waller has the numbers through volume (23 runners), but the strike rate is more “solid” than “bully” at this particular track.

Race-by-race

Race 1: Thymely Food Co. Mdn Hcp — 12:05, 1750

Wairarapa gets my early vote because the placement screams intent. Waterhouse and Bott don’t debut them over 1750m unless they think the horse will run the trip, and Rachel King is a rider you want when a race needs judgement rather than brute speed. From gate 3, she can land close enough without burning petrol, which is gold around this circuit.

The race itself looks like a classic maiden handicap where the “exposed improvers” can be over-bet. Microgravity has the eye-catching form string (221) but it comes with a nasty task from gate 15. If that rider ends up snagging back and circling, Gosford can make it hard to sustain a long run, especially at this trip.

The danger is Sharbino from gate 1. The recent form reads messy, but the draw gives him the chance to travel sweet and pinch lengths while others hunt for cover.

Play: Win bet Wairarapa. Small saver quinella with Sharbino if you like protecting the map.

Race 2: Eve Electrical & Communications Mdn Hcp — 12:40, 1094

Does Yattazou just win this by being better? It’s the most straightforward angle on the card: Waller yard, Tommy Berry up, and a horse that has been competitive in stronger maidens without breaking through. Berry rides Gosford like he knows every bump on the track, and he wins half his rides here from six attempts, which is enough to take seriously.

I’m wary of making it sound too neat though, because this is still a maiden handicap and there are a couple of improvers with gates. Alabama Hammer lands barrier 1 and gets every chance to make it a sprint home. Krasaki has shown ability (placed on debut) and sits in the same “could be anything” bucket as a few others.

The one I keep coming back to as the danger is Reign ’Em In. Three placings on the bounce says he turns up, and if the speed is hot, he’s the type that keeps finding late.

Play: Win bet Yattazou. Exacta saver Yattazou to Reign ’Em In.

Race 3: Ncis Sydney Midway Mdn Hcp — 13:20, 1094

Race shape is the story here. With a big field and a stack of gates to sort out, I want the horse that can hold a spot without doing something silly early. Russian Words maps sweet from barrier 2 and gets C Reith, who has nine rides at Gosford for two wins and doesn’t mind riding a bit cold if the race sets up that way.

I’m also giving a tick to Slam Dunk purely off the inside draw. He’s a 4YO in a race dominated by 3YOs, which usually means he’s had his chance, but barrier 1 can turn average into competitive when others get trapped deep.

The danger is See Diamond with A B Collett. Collett doesn’t win much at Gosford (no wins from eight rides), but he places plenty, and Brad Widdup’s camp tends to have them ready to run when they show up.

Play: Small each-way Russian Words. If he drifts, I bet; if he’s crushed in betting, I keep it tiny.

Race 4: Dennis Bournes Memorial Hcp (C1) — 13:55, 1312

The market will probably want to make this a Waller race, but I’m siding with the Gosford angle horse. Difensivo comes in off a strong form progression (243-13) and gets Kerrin McEvoy, who has enough rides here (9) to trust his judgement. The bigger pull is the trainer: Nacim Dilmi wins 4 from 10 at Gosford and places 7, and that’s proper evidence, not a one-off pop.

From barrier 7, Difensivo likely gets cover and a clean run at them. If the leaders overdo it, he’s the one who can be produced at the right time.

The danger is Wootton Way. He’s drawn to get every favour, and Waller’s overall Gosford strike rate isn’t scary, but he still brings plenty of live ones. J R Collett’s Gosford placing record is elite for reliability, so you can see the case.

Play: Win bet Difensivo. Boxed quinella with Wootton Way as protection.

Race 5: Elite Sand & Soil Hcp (C1) — 14:35, 1750

This is the best betting race on the card because it finally brings together horses with at least a bit of substance at the trip. Go Glenn is the play. He’s already proven he handles Gosford, with two runs here for a win and a placing, and he’s trained by a yard that can get them ready to peak at the right time. He also doesn’t look like a horse who needs everything to go perfectly; he can sit handy and still finish his race.

Abandonment is the class runner on paper and Bjorn Baker’s team always demands respect, but he’s giving weight away and drawn 8, which can force a decision earlier than you’d like over 1750m. Lipstick is the other Waller chance that can land the right run from gate 1 with Berry, and that’s the exact scenario where Berry turns these midweeks into a clinic.

The danger for Go Glenn is Lipstick, purely because barrier 1 at this trip can turn the race into “first shot wins”. If Berry controls the tempo, you’ll need to be good to run him down.

Play: Win bet Go Glenn. Saver exacta Go Glenn and Lipstick both ways if you’re playing a bit bigger.

Race 6: Brew-B-Q @ Teg 7 Nov 2026 Super Mdn Hcp — 15:10, 1312

Stable move first: Rachel King sticks with Waterhouse and Bott on Flying Artisam, and that matters because King rides Gosford well and this horse has already shown a jump from first to second up (9-2). From gate 5 she can take options, which is half the battle in these big maidens over 1312m.

I respect Merini too. He’s been runner-up in both runs this prep (4-22), and while gate 14 is ugly, he has the profile of a horse that keeps finding. If the speed is on and they’re fanning, he can still get into the race late.

The left-field danger is Polymer from barrier 1. He’s a 4YO with a win two back and maps to get the softest run in the race. If the inside is fine, he can pinch this with a cheap split at the right time.

Play: Win bet Flying Artisam. If you want cover, take a small place bet Merini for the wide-gate grinder angle.

Race 7: Happy 80th Barry Goldsworthy Provincial (Bm64) — 15:45, 1094

The contrast is clean: Charlina brings momentum (314321) and has already won on her only Gosford run, while Leave No Doubt brings a bigger weight and the sort of profile that can either bully them or fold if the run gets tough. I’m with Charlina. She draws 9 which isn’t perfect, but she gets Olivia Chambers, and Chambers has at least ridden enough here (7 rides) to know how quickly positions change in these short races.

Iron Fury is the hard-luck type with a string of seconds (24422-). If you like backing honesty, he’s your horse, and Nathan Doyle’s Gosford record is strong on proper volume: 8 runners for 3 winners and 7 placings. That stable knows how to get a cheque here.

The danger is Iron Fury, because if Charlina ends up doing work early from the gate, the one stalking midfield and peeling at the right time will be him.

Play: Win bet Charlina. Quinella Charlina and Iron Fury for the straight form safety net.

The plays

NAP: Go Glenn (Race 5, 14:35). He’s already handled Gosford (two visits for a win and a placing) and gets a race where the main threats either give weight away or rely on the perfect map.

Value: Difensivo (Race 4, 13:55). Dilmi’s Gosford record is the sort you can follow, and the horse’s form line says he’s still climbing.

Banker for multis: Yattazou (Race 2, 12:40). Waller and Berry is the meeting’s most dependable combo, and this looks his right maiden.

Each-way: Russian Words (Race 3, 13:20). Barrier 2 gives him every chance to box seat and run into the money in a race where plenty will be posted wide early.

Course angle to keep: When Dilmi targets Gosford, it’s not sightseeing. If he keeps sending progressive types here, he stays on the shortlist every time.
