Grafton Racing Tips 5 July 2026 — is Dunn the key?
Grafton Racing Tips 5 July 2026 — is Dunn the key?
M J Dunn turns up at Grafton like he owns the place. Forty one runners here for thirteen winners and twenty eight placings is a proper body of work, and it matters on a day where plenty of the horses themselves are either lightly raced or new to the track. That trainer edge shapes how I want to bet this meeting, especially in the races where the form lines look messy and you need something reliable to lean on.
We have three races on the card in the data, all on turf, and they all ask different questions. The 2yo opener is a curtain raiser with limited exposed form. The staying maiden at 1881m is a grinder where position and stamina trump flash. Then we get the 3yo Guineas Prelude where pace and intent decide it. These Grafton racing tips aim to do one thing: get you to a short list fast, with a clear staking plan attached.
Grafton — the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two starts at Grafton, so I’m treating track stats as context, not gospel, unless the sample is real.
What does matter is who repeatedly performs here from the saddle and the stable.

If you’re playing multiples, you want either Dunn runners or riders that consistently make good decisions here. Justin P Stanley’s record is the standout on this card, and I’m happy to pay attention when he’s on a horse with any kind of upward form.
Race-by-race
Race 1: Dougherty Property Springboard Prelude Mdn Plate — 11:45, 1110m
Profit In Paradise looks the safest of the horses with actual exposed form, and in a 2yo maiden that can be enough. He’s had three goes for a form line of 0-6-6, which doesn’t scream star, but it does tell you he’s handled raceday and kept finding the line while others were learning what the gates are. Barrier 4 is the sort of draw that lets D Peisley stay out of trouble and still hold a spot.
The market will want to gravitate to debutants from yards that can produce one first up, but I’d rather back a juvenile who’s already been asked to cop pressure and keep improving. And there’s a quiet trainer angle too: P L Shailer has three runners at Grafton for one winner and one placing, a small sample, but at least it says the stable can place one here.
The danger I respect is Prestige Austria. He brings the better recent profile on paper with a 3-0 from two runs, and D L Turner is a rider who regularly puts horses into the race at this track with twenty five rides here and eight placings. Gate 2 gives him every chance to control the map.
Staking: Win bet Profit In Paradise. Small saver on Prestige Austria if you want coverage in a race where the unknowns can jump.
Race 2: Grafton Gas & Plumbing Country Boosted Mdn Plate — 12:20, 1881m
Here’s the puzzle: who actually wants 1881m, and who is just turning up because the 1400m options were ugly? I’m siding with Sheriff’s Star because he looks like the one who will run the trip properly and keep turning it into a staying contest. His recent form reads 3-4-5-0-2-2, and those last two seconds are the key. He’s been close enough in his runs to suggest he’s holding form, not just flashing late.
Barrier 4 helps Jake Bayliss make a clean staying ride. Bayliss hasn’t won at Grafton from twelve rides, but he’s placed three times, and this is the type of race where a patient steer and timing matter more than raw strike rate. The stable is the real anchor: M J Dunn’s Grafton record is the one you can bank, and when they target a maiden like this with a horse who’s already knocking on the door, I listen.
The other runner with a genuine course note is Kiwi Harmony</strong. He’s drawn barrier 1 and that can win these staying maidens at provincial tracks if you hold a spot and pinch a break at the right time. He hasn’t won here, but he’s a horse who can put himself in the first four and make you chase him.
Staking: Win bet Sheriff’s Star. If you’re playing exotics, keep Kiwi Harmony in the top two or three, but I’m not turning this into a wide spend.

Race 3: Mckimms Real Estate Grafton Guineas Prelude (Bm66) — 13:00, 1553m
The race shape makes this. There’s enough tactical speed among the on pace types that you should get a proper run at 1553m, and that’s why I want Need For Spieth launching from the middle draw. His form line 1-0-5-1 tells you he can win and he can cope when it’s not handed to him. With B Lerena on, he maps to sit in the first half and still have a kick.
This is also the race where I’ll forgive a little if the horse has already shown he can do it at Grafton. Not So Dubious has three runs here for one win, and while that’s not enough to label him anything, it’s enough to say he’s handled this circuit before. The problem is the wider question around his current form, and barrier 1 can be a blessing or a trap depending on whether he has the speed to hold a spot without spending petrol early.
The danger is Satin And Cash. He comes in off a last start win and gets a lightish weight (121.2). He’s had one run at Grafton and placed, so you can at least say he’s already been competitive here. If the leaders overdo it, he’s the one I can see peeling out and getting last crack.
Staking: Win bet Need For Spieth. Save on Satin And Cash if your read is the tempo gets too hot for the ones up front.
The plays
NAP: Sheriff’s Star (Race 2, 12:20). The Dunn factor at Grafton is real, and this horse brings the most convincing staying maiden profile, with consecutive seconds coming into a trip that should suit.
Value: Profit In Paradise (Race 1, 11:45). In a juvenile maiden full of unknowns, I’m happy to take the runner who has already been asked to race three times and keep progressing, from a barrier that keeps him out of the chaos.
Banker for multis: Need For Spieth (Race 3, 13:00). He looks the most reliable winner type in the best race of the day, and the map should give him every chance to land in the first three even if he doesn’t win.
Each-way look: Satin And Cash (Race 3, 13:00). He’s already placed on his only Grafton run and comes in off a win, which is enough to justify a smaller each-way play if the price is fair.
Course angle to keep following: when Dunn targets Grafton, treat it like intent, not coincidence. Thirteen winners from forty one runners isn’t a quirk, it’s a pattern worth paying for.
Next time Justin P Stanley turns up at Grafton on a horse with any kind of upward form, I’m upgrading it before I even look at the rest of the field.
