Ipswich Racing Tips 19 August — can Moscow Mule break through?

Racingbase Staff Racingbase Staff

Moscow Mule looks like one of those horses that keeps turning up, keeps landing in the money, and keeps making punters feel like they’ve been personally wronged by the photo finish. But this Ipswich setup gives him another proper crack, and with Ben Thompson sticking and the Dunn yard generally knowing how to place one here, I’m happy to lean in rather than keep making excuses for him.

There are only three races on the Ipswich program we’ve got in front of us today, all on turf, and it reads like a meeting where you can either bet with intent or not bet at all. I’m going to do the former, but selectively. These Ipswich racing tips are built around two things: runners that look ready to peak off their recent form, and connections that repeatedly perform at this track when they choose to show up.

One quick note before we get too clever: live odds weren’t available for these races at time of writing, so this is a pure form and setup read. If you see a dramatic market move late, treat it as information and adjust, but don’t let it bully you off the right horse.

Ipswich — the setup

Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have only one or two prior starts at Ipswich, so the track stats are more about the people doing the steering than declaring any of these horses “track specialists”.

Still, a couple of Ipswich patterns are worth keeping in your back pocket. Ben Thompson rides this track as well as anyone on the card: 22 wins and 55 placings from 90 rides here, so he hits the frame more often than not. Ryan Maloney and M Rodd are also solid Ipswich operators on volume, while Jag Guthmann Chester is the type who can sneak you a price because he consistently puts them in the race and racks up placings.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
Ben Thompson 90 22 55 24.44 61.11
Ryan Maloney 30 6 17 20.00 56.67
B Lerena 89 15 39 16.85 43.82
M Rodd 32 5 12 15.63 37.50

Trainer wise, there’s a meaningful angle that does matter for today’s first race: M J Dunn has a proper body of work at Ipswich, with 40 runners for 8 winners here. You can trust that as more than noise. Chris and Corey Munce also place a stack of runners here and get results, and Heathcote always pops up, but you’re often paying for reputation with him at this venue.

Race-by-race

Race 1: Tab Mdn Hcp — 13:08, 1837m

Moscow Mule is the horse I want to be on, and I’m not overthinking it: his form reads 3-2-2 this prep and that’s the profile of a maiden that’s found his level and is knocking the door off its hinges. The set up also suits a horse that wants time to build. Over 1837m at Ipswich you don’t need to be a 100m sprinter, you need to sustain a run and keep finding when the pressure goes on.

The other reason I’m happy to stick with him is the human combination. Dunn is a reliable Ipswich trainer on volume (40 runners here), and when Dunn teams up with Ben Thompson at Ipswich it has been sharp: 4 rides together for 2 wins and 3 placings at this track. That’s not a huge sample, so I’m not calling it a golden ticket, but it does tell you the stable uses Thompson for a reason and the pairing works when they commit to it.

The danger is Isla Delilah. She’s been around the mark without winning, but she has placed in both of her Ipswich visits, and the Munce stable generally improves these types as they learn their craft. If she gets the right trail and Moscow Mule has to do early work from gate 6, she can be the one that pinches it late.

Staking: Win bet Moscow Mule. Saver quinella with Isla Delilah if you want coverage in a race where a few are capable of running to their form without warning.

Race 2: Barrier Reef Pools Mdn Plate — 13:43, 1476m

Here’s the puzzle: do you take the “right now” horse, or do you take the one with the soft run mapped from the inside who might finally get a crack at them?

I’m siding with Ted Lasso because his form line says he’s learning fast. He’s gone 4 then 3, and that’s the sort of second preparation progression that often turns into a win when they find a winnable maiden. Gate 5 keeps it clean. R Dolan is not the headline Ipswich rider, but he’s ridden enough here (23 rides) that you can trust he won’t get lost in the corners.

Raging Raider is the danger and he’s a serious one. His recent form is 3-4-3-6-2, and he’s already run a placing on his only Ipswich start. Ben Thompson takes the ride, and that matters at this track. If Raging Raider begins cleanly from gate 6 and lands one off the fence with momentum, he’s the horse most likely to blunt Ted Lasso’s finish.

One more to keep onside if you’re playing wider: Hit A Lick brings a solid 5-4-8-2 progression, and Schweida doesn’t waste runs. From gate 11 you’re relying on luck and timing, but the upside is there if they overdo it in front.

Staking: Small win bet Ted Lasso. If the tote says Raging Raider is being absolutely steamed, I’d rather save than argue with it.

Race 3: Gordon’s Gin (Bm70) — 14:18, 2373m

This is the best betting race on the card because it’s the only one where class, stamina and intent all collide, and you can actually take a view instead of guessing which maiden decides to behave.

I Am The Empire is the one. Yes, he’s an eight year old carrying 61kg, but his recent form is screaming for a race like this: 3-0-0-0-0-2. That last start second suggests he’s right at the pointy end of his prep, and this 2373m looks like a distance that lets him grind rather than sprint. Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald also bring a proper Ipswich record: 23 runners here for 5 winners. That’s enough volume to take seriously, and it tells you they don’t just throw them on the float for the scenery.

The most obvious threat is Jemoma Alpilage from barrier 1. He’s had only one start at Ipswich and he won it, so keep the sample size in check, but gate 1 at this trip is gold if the rider can hold a spot and control the race. If they crawl and turn it into a sit sprint, the inside runner becomes a nightmare to run down.

My blowout horse is Whatjeudoin’. He’s inconsistent, but he has won once from three Ipswich runs and he gets in light enough that one bold midrace move can put him into the fight. If the track is playing to swoopers late, he’s the one I’d want onside at a price.

Staking: Win bet I Am The Empire. If you’re playing an exacta, I’d anchor him with Jemoma Alpilage. If the tempo looks like it will be slow, consider a small saver on Jemoma Alpilage instead of doubling down.

The plays

If you’re betting Ipswich today, bet like you mean it and keep it tight. My NAP is Moscow Mule in the opener. He’s been living in the placings (3-2-2 this prep), and the Dunn and Thompson combination has already clicked at this track from a handful of rides together. He doesn’t need to find much, he just needs the race run cleanly.

The value angle sits in Race 3 if the market overreacts to weight and age. I Am The Empire looks ready to run another strong staying race and the Neasham and Archibald team has a genuine Ipswich strike rate on a meaningful sample of runners here. That’s the sort of stable stat you can reuse, not a one run coincidence.

The banker for multis is the Race 2 pair in the frame, rather than trying to split them: Ted Lasso and Raging Raider. Ted Lasso is trending the right way (4 then 3), and Raging Raider brings the consistency and the Ben Thompson factor.

If you’re hunting a place play, Isla Delilah has placed in both Ipswich runs, and that’s about as reliable as today’s short history gets.

Keep an eye on the Thompson rides at Ipswich going forward, because 90 rides worth of evidence says he keeps putting horses in the first four even when the market misses it.
