Sandown Racing Tips 19 August — can the Maher runners bully the maidens?

The most telling thing on this Sandown card is how hard one stable leans into it. Ciaron Maher turns up with multiple live chances across the maidens, and his overall record at the track is strong enough to treat it as more than “big stable, big names”. From 112 runners here he wins just over one in five and lands a top three finish almost half the time. That’s proper, repeatable Sandown intent.

We’ve only got three races to work with in the supplied data, but they’re the sort of races that can make your day: one handicap where the map matters, then two three year old maidens where stable depth and rider choices do a lot of the talking. You’ll get Sandown racing tips with a clear pick in each, plus where I’d actually bet and where I’d simply watch.

Sandown — the setup

Turf surface, and the key practical angle today is that most runners across these fields don’t bring deep Sandown history. Where there is course form, it’s mostly one or two runs, so treat it as a reference point, not a label.

One runner is worth a quick note on pure “likes this place” evidence: Sapphire Siren has won on her only start at Sandown. That’s not a trend yet, but it’s a nice tie breaker in a Benchmark race where a few arrive with messy profiles.

For jockey context, there are a couple of riders who repeatedly make Sandown work for them. Craig Williams has the volume (66 rides here) and wins often enough to matter, while W Egan rides the track aggressively well and converts at a high clip from a smaller sample (20 rides). Use those as confidence markers when you’re weighing up close calls.

Race-by-race: Sandown predictions

Race 1: Sportsbet Jockey Watch (Bm70) — 13:00, 1750

Tempranillo is the one I want on side. The Waller camp have him knocking on the door (51-533) and the Damian Lane booking reads like a “let’s stop messing around” move, even if the Lane and Waller combo at Sandown hasn’t clicked yet from a tiny two-run sample. More importantly, Tempranillo’s own Sandown résumé is solid without being overplayed: he’s placed in two of three course visits, which at least tells you he handles the circuit and can sustain a run here.

The race shape helps too. From gate 5 he can land in that comfy stalking lane over 1750m, while a few of the main threats either need luck from wider draws or might get dragged into doing work early. If Lane has him travelling at the 600m, he’s the one I trust to build, not sprint-and-hope.

The danger is Sapphire Siren, and I’m not pretending she’s a soft danger either. She brings the sharpest recent form on the page (3-131) and she’s won on her only Sandown start. If Nugent rolls her into the race at the right time, she can pinch it with a turn of foot. Just keep in mind she’s drawn 6 and may have to make her own momentum.

What I’m doing: Win bet Tempranillo. If you like playing a saver, keep it simple and save on Sapphire Siren, because she’s the one who can make you look silly late.

Race 2: Stow Storage Solutions Mdn Plate — 13:35, 1312

This is a proper three year old maiden puzzle: a few with one good run, a few with two ordinary ones, and a stack of unknowns. The horse I’m happiest building around is Shooting Brake. The form line is clean enough (23) and, with Stackhouse up from a wide alley (10), I expect a ride that looks to get him into the race early rather than spotting the field a start and praying for luck.

The other reason I’m leaning his way is what’s missing from most of these. We don’t have meaningful course history for the key hopes in this field, so you have to prioritise “will they run the trip strongly and hold a position”. Shooting Brake looks like he’s already in that zone.

The danger is Brownbury (form: 3). Third on debut is often the right platform for a maiden like this, and Thornton can put them into the race without panicking. The knock is the gate (8) at this start, where you can end up posted if you don’t have early gears.

What I’m doing: This is a smaller play. Win bet Shooting Brake if the price is fair. If the market gets silly, make it a watch race and keep your powder dry.

Race 3: Sportsbet Fixed Odds Exotics Mdn Plate — 14:10, 1312

The market will probably gravitate to the familiar names, but the placement that screams “ready” is Resolutely. Hayes, Williams, and a formline of 2-22 is about as straightforward as maidens get: she keeps turning up, keeps doing enough to be in the finish, and she doesn’t need to improve a stack to win one like this.

The map looks kind as well. From gate 6 Craig Williams should be able to find a midfield slot with cover, and he’s a Sandown operator with the sort of record that matters at volume: 66 rides here and he wins often enough that you don’t ignore him when he lands on the progressive type.

Now, the Maher factor. He has a clutch of runners in this race (Ghana’s Akan, Platinum Pearl, Saintly Dancer, Stipulation) and his overall Sandown numbers are the card’s most bankable stable angle. That makes this the best betting race of the three because we can lean on intent as much as raw exposed form.

Ghana’s Akan is the main danger. The form (24254) says he’s around the mark, and Ethan Brown is a steady pair of hands at this track. The question is whether he’s got the killer punch late, or whether he’s the type who keeps finding one or two better. If Maher’s going to win it, he might do it with one of the less exposed ones, but I’m not tipping blind into that.

What I’m doing: Win bet Resolutely. Quinella saver with Ghana’s Akan if you’re playing exotics, because that’s the runner most likely to give you a heart rate spike in the last 100m.

The plays

NAP: Resolutely (Race 3, 14:10). The repeated near-misses (2-22) with Craig Williams taking the steer is the kind of maiden profile I’m happy to back, not “hope”.

Value: Tempranillo (Race 1, 13:00) if the market overreacts to the flashier last-start winner types. He’s placed in two of three at Sandown and gets the Lane ride that suits a 1750m stalk-and-pounce setup.

Banker for multis: Resolutely. She’s the most reliable “turn up and run well” horse in the three races provided.

Each-way profile: Tempranillo again, simply because he keeps showing up at this track and the run style should keep him out of trouble.

Course angle to keep: When Maher sends a team to Sandown, treat it as deliberate. His record here (112 runners deep) is the sort you can reuse meeting after meeting, especially in maidens where stable pressure often decides the race.

Next time Maher brings multiple runners to a metro maiden like this, watch the late market push on the one they actually want and don’t be afraid to follow it.
