Morphettville Racing Tips 9 May 2026 — can Vaniteux finally land one?
Opening
There are horses you bet because they’re peaking, and horses you bet because you’re sick of watching them find one better. Vaniteux sits right in that second camp, and Morphettville gives him another clean chance to stop teasing: he keeps turning up, he keeps being in the finish, and he keeps not winning.
That’s the tension on this trimmed little Morphettville program, three races on the turf, starting at 11:47am. The card leans into the practical stuff: a staying handicap to open, a sharp 3YO 1148m, then a 2YO set-weights style contest where the unknowns do the loudest talking. I’m giving you Morphettville racing tips that are opinionated, usable, and built around what matters today: barriers, weights, and which connections have a genuine relationship with this track.
Morphettville — the setup
We’re working with limited exposed Morphettville form in the fields provided. Outside of a few runners with five or more course visits, most of these are still at the “data point, not trend” stage around this circuit. So I’m leaning harder on race shape, map, and whether a horse is trending forward or simply circulating.

Race-by-race
Race 1: Sportsbet Green Tick Hcp (68) — 11:47, 1969m
Vaniteux reads like the safest bet on the meeting, purely because he keeps turning up and he keeps running to his mark. That form line of 1-21223 says he’s not going backwards, and in the last 90 days he’s gone four from four for placings with a win in there as well. When a horse keeps landing in the first few, I stop trying to get cute: he’s holding his condition, he’s coping with racing, and he’s giving you a run for your money.
The obvious knock is the map: gate 11 can leave you doing work if they roll along early, and this is the sort of trip where you want to find a rhythm, not be dragged into a three-wide grind. Still, if Brooke King can get him into the first half without burning petrol, his profile says he’ll be there when the race gets serious.
The danger is Smother (barrier 5). He’s been knocking on the door (320320), and unlike Vaniteux he gets the kind of draw that lets Melham put him exactly where he wants. Smother has five Morphettville runs for three placings, so he’s not a track specialist, but he’s reliable enough here to punish any mistake.
Staking: Win bet Vaniteux. If you’re playing exotics, keep Smother on the right side of the ledger.
Race 2: Carbine Club Of South Australia Inc (Bm64) — 12:22, 1148m
Here’s the question you have to answer before you have a bet: do you want the proven winner from the inside, or the improver with the right weight swing?
I’m with Bred ‘Em All. He’s drawn barrier 1, he’s a 3YO who’s already won, and he’s done it at this track on his only Morphettville start. That’s a data point, not a track obsession, but it matters because some of these simply haven’t handled the circuit at all. Harry Grace is a rider I’m happy to follow here too, he wins at a healthy clip on this course and hits the frame often enough to make you comfortable taking a positive run.
The obvious danger is Carpe Astra (barrier 3). The form is solid without being flashy (622120), and the set-up looks ideal for Todd Pannell to camp just off the leaders and get first crack. The only niggle is his Morphettville stat line: one run here and he finished well back. I’m not overreacting to that single run, but I’m not ignoring it either.
Staking: Win bet Bred ‘Em All. Saver only on Carpe Astra if the market pushes him out to a price you can live with.

Race 3: Sportsbet David Coles Am Stakes — 12:57, 1312m
The market usually falls in love with the last-start winners in these 2YO races, and fair enough, because at least you know they can cop pressure. But I prefer the runner who looks like he’s already got the tools to handle a proper race shape.
Howcani Resistyou gets that vote. He comes in off a second placing, he draws barrier 5 (which is a gift in a juvenile race), and he’s from a stable that actually converts at Morphettville. Lloyd Kennewell is two from two at the track in the sample we have, which is obviously thin, but it still tells you the yard has placed these well when they’ve come here. Chris Parnham is another positive: if he can land one-two pairs and get the kid to relax, he gets every chance to pounce at the top of the straight.
The danger is Jarbardar. He won on debut, and that’s the hardest piece of evidence to dismiss with 2YOs. The draw (12) is the sting. If he’s good enough, he’ll overcome it, but wide gates in these can force young horses into doing too much, too early.
Staking: Each-way Howcani Resistyou. If you want a tiny saver, make it Jarbardar to win, purely on the winning habit.
The plays
If you’re betting this Morphettville card like a grown-up, you don’t need to turn it into a circus. I’ve got one horse I want to be with properly, one I’ll take at a sensible each-way, and then the rest is just discipline.
NAP: Vaniteux (Race 1, 11:47). Four runs in the last 90 days, four placings, and an average finish of second. That’s a horse who shows up and does his job, and today’s race doesn’t look deeper than what he’s already been competing in.
Value: Howcani Resistyou (Race 3, 12:57) each-way. The draw gives him a cleaner run than the headline winners drawn out deep, and that’s often the difference in 2YO races when they bunch and panic.
Banker for multis: Bred ‘Em All (Race 2, 12:22). Barrier 1, already a winner, and he’s won on his only start at Morphettville. Keep it simple.
Each-way anchor: Howcani Resistyou again. If you’re having a bet in the last, you want the horse who can land the run and keep out of trouble.
Course angle to keep: Will Clarken remains the stable I respect most on this circuit from real volume, and when his runners show up with a draw that lets them hold a spot, I treat them as automatic inclusions next time too.
Next meeting, watch how these inside draws ride in the short-course 3YO races here, because the riders with a plan tend to turn Morphettville into a positioning contest, not a raw talent contest.
