MT Gambier Racing Tips 22 May 2026 — can Purcell own the middle of the card?
MT Gambier Racing Tips 22 May 2026 — can Purcell own the middle of the card?
Aaron Purcell turns up at Mount Gambier with the sort of quiet confidence I always respect, not with a stack of runners, but with runners placed exactly where they can win. He’s got Geffina in the 1695m handicap and a couple more later, and the way the card maps, that mid meeting patch looks like it could be his.
This is a compact five race program on turf, with the bulk of races sitting at 1312m to 1695m, which means tempo and positioning matter more than people think. You’ll get my straight read on each race, the danger that can ruin it, and what I’d actually bet. These MT Gambier racing tips lean on current form and race shape first, with course numbers used properly, not dressed up from one run.
MT Gambier, the setup today
We don’t have deep course history across these fields. Most of the runners with track data are sitting on one or two prior starts here, so treat those as pointers, not gospel. Still, there are a few angles worth using.
Jockey note: when you want a Gambier rider with repeatable evidence, Tom Madden and Jack Hill are the ones you keep coming back to. Madden has 17 rides here with 12 placings, Hill has 16 rides with 9 placings. That’s real volume, and it matters more than the flashy 1 from 1 stuff.
Trainer note: Wayne Walters has brought 21 runners here without landing a winner. That doesn’t mean he can’t win today, but it does mean I’m not paying overs on his horses at this track.

Race-by-race MT Gambier predictions
Race 1: Gambier Earth Movers Volcano Sprint — 11:30, 1312m
I’m with Comic Hero. The recent form string (9851-3) reads like a horse who finally worked out how to put a race away, then came back and held the improvement. He also draws gate 2, which is the key on a day where a lot of these want to be ridden with cover. Cian Macredmond is a plus at this course too, and while he’s only had four rides here, he’s managed to place in half of them and has a winner among that small set. That’s enough to respect the booking without pretending it’s some unbeatable pattern.
The danger is Free Beer from barrier 1. Alysha Warren can hold a spot, and 125.6 is a workable weight in this field. If the leaders crawl and it turns into a sit sprint, inside draws can make you look smarter than you are.
Staking: Win bet Comic Hero. Small saver quinella Comic Hero and Free Beer.
Race 2: Sportsbet Mdn Plate — 12:05, 1312m
Here’s the question that decides the race. Do we trust the maiden who keeps knocking, or the lightly raced types with upside? I’ll take the one who’s been living in the finish.
Gazelle comes in with a proper provincial maiden profile: 34223-. She’s been close enough often enough that you don’t need to imagine the win, you just need a clean run and a break or two. She gets in with 117.9 and Alysha Warren takes the ride. Warren hasn’t won at the track from 10 rides, but she has placed twice, and the light weight is the bigger point for me.
My danger is Del Lirenza, the 2yo with barrier 1. Will Price can use that draw to hold the rail, and a 2yo taking on older maidens can be a sharp play when they’ve already shown they belong. Del Lirenza’s recent form says “3” and that’s enough to take seriously. Over the last 90 days, Del Lirenza has one run and it was a placing, so the stable has brought it here in the right order, even if we’re still working off a thin sample.
Wide gates complicate a few others, especially the debutants, and I’m not keen to go hunting from barrier 13, 14, 15 or 16 in a big maiden unless the market is screaming value. No odds feed today, so I’m keeping it simple.
Staking: Each-way Gazelle. Saver exacta Gazelle with Del Lirenza.
Race 3: Thomas Foods International Mdn Plate — 12:40, 1695m
This one reads like a race where the winner comes from the horses who can settle and sustain, not the ones who look good at the 400m then go sour late. Giddy Up Bankcheck is the one I want on that basis. The form (8-5442) says improvement, and the “2” last time is often the trigger for a maiden like this to finally get it done, especially stepping into 1695m where many of these are still learning to finish.
There’s a small piece of recent evidence to back the confidence. Over the last 90 days, Giddy Up Bankcheck has had three runs for a placing and an average finishing position of 2.67. That’s not a monster sample, but it tells you the horse is regularly getting into the part of the race that matters.
The danger is Mandarin. The form (652-20) includes a “0” last time, but it also includes a “2” two runs back, and from barrier 2 she can land much closer than the wide drawn types and make the others chase her. If she’s forgiven for the last one, she’s right in it.
I’m against the deep out of form runners unless the market gifts you a ridiculous price, and again, we don’t have live odds here to play that game.
Staking: Win bet Giddy Up Bankcheck. If you want insurance, save on Mandarin.
Race 4: Bio Gro Green Future Blue Lake Hcp — 13:15, 1695m
The contender is Geffina, and I’m happy to make her the main bet of the day.
She comes here with form that screams “reliable in this grade” (234421) and she carries 122.3, which is a proper winning weight in a country handicap where a few are lugging more than they’d like. Tom Madden rides, and he’s the most bankable Gambier jockey on the card: 17 rides here and he’s hit the frame 12 times. When a rider places at that clip at one track, it usually means they make good decisions, not that they’ve had all the best horses.
Geffina also has one previous run at Mount Gambier and she placed. That’s a tick, not a banner headline, but it removes the “will she handle the place” doubt. Over the last 90 days she’s had four runs for a win and another placing, and an average finishing position of 2.75. She’s in the zone.
The main danger is The Narrator, who looks like the “right run, right time” horse. He’s in form (1655-1), draws barrier 1, and Jack Hill is a strong local. Hill has 16 rides here for 9 placings, so if this turns into a rail and run affair, that combination can pinch it.

Staking: Win bet Geffina. Saver exacta Geffina and The Narrator. This is the best betting race on the card.
Race 5: Hard Rated Hcp (54) — 13:50, 1531m
The market problem, if there is one, usually sits with horses like Bruzani. They’re not flashy, they don’t win every second start, and people stop forgiving them. But barrier 1 at 1531m matters, and Bruzani draws to get every favour. Jack Hill jumps on, and at this track he regularly lands horses into the race. That’s what you want in a 54 where plenty will be wanting luck from awkward alleys.
Form-wise, Bruzani (24-657) hasn’t been trending like a moral, but the placement says they think he can hold his own in this company. The trainer, P A Chow, is also one I’ll pay attention to at this venue. From three runners at Mount Gambier, he’s won once and placed twice. That’s still only three runners, so I’m not calling him a track master, but it does tell you he doesn’t waste bullets here.
The danger is Squagaga. She’s been around the money often enough (43692) and if the leaders overdo it early, she’s the type who can be strong through the line and make the inside runners look one paced late.
I’m happy to oppose the topweight Hard Leaf from barrier 14. You can win from out there, but you need everything to go right, and I’d rather be on the horse that gets the cheap run.
Staking: Each-way Bruzani. Small saver win bet Squagaga if you want to cover the late closer.
The plays
NAP: Geffina (Race 4, 13:15). She’s in winning form, carries a sensible weight, and Madden is the one rider on the day with big enough Mount Gambier volume to trust.
Value: Bruzani (Race 5, 13:50) each-way. Barrier 1 and Jack Hill is the angle, and in these 54 handicaps that’s often worth more than a prettier last start finishing position.
Banker for multis: Geffina. If you’re building anything, she’s the leg that makes sense because her recent form is steady and she doesn’t need the race to fall apart.
Each-way play: Gazelle (Race 2, 12:05). That 34223- profile is hard to knock in a maiden where many are still guessing.
Course angle to keep: Tom Madden’s Mount Gambier strike looks built on repeatable decision making, not one hot horse. When he’s on something that’s already in form, you can lean in with more confidence than most country cards allow.
Next time Mount Gambier comes around, I want to see if Purcell keeps placing his horses in these mid card sweet spots, because today’s setup gives him every chance to make it a habit.

Who are the top jockeys at MT Gambier on today’s card?
