Sale Racing Tips 17 May 2026 — is it a Freedman day?
You don’t get to call a meeting after a stable, but you can absolutely bet like it’s their day. The Freedman barn turns up to Sale with the kind of strike that makes you sit up straight: 6 winners from 12 runners here, and they’ve placed 10 of those 12. That’s not a quirky one off. That’s a pattern.
So that’s where I started these Sale racing tips: which of their two in the opener is the right one, and how hard do we lean into it? After that, it’s a pretty classic country card with two 1100m maiden plates on turf, both full of lightly raced types where barriers, intent, and the ability to hold a spot matter more than deep exposed ratings (because there aren’t any).
I’ll go race by race, give you the runner I want to be with, the one that can beat it, and the bet I’d actually have.
Sale — the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners either have one prior start at Sale or none at all, so treat any “track record” here as a note, not a label.
The more bankable edge comes from connections that repeatedly perform here. The Freedman strike rate at this course is the headline: 12 runners, 6 winners, 10 placings. That’s enough volume to trust.

Race-by-race
Race 1: Ladbrokes Big Bets Copy Now Mdn Plate — 12:10, 1102m
The stable move is the whole story early: the Freedmans hold two cards and they’re the only yard on the meeting with a proper, repeatable Sale edge. I want to be with Alphabet (gate 8, Damien Thornton) even from the outside draw, because the profile screams “ready to improve” rather than “limited”. That form line (263-5) reads like a horse that’s been around the mark, had a break, and has come back good enough to be competitive straight away.
The other Freedman, Nimcha (gate 3, D W Stackhouse), is the danger because the map is kinder and Stackhouse is strong at this track with real volume: 15 rides here for 3 winners, 7 placings. If Nimcha uses the inside draw to land closer than Alphabet, you can easily see Alphabet doing work mid race and leaving a sprint in the locker for the one with the softer run.
I’ve also got respect for Superior Dame (gate 4, L Nolen) on pure maiden logic: she’s already run second, she draws to stalk, and Griffiths places plenty of runners here even if he doesn’t win as often.
Bet: Win bet Alphabet. Small saver quinella Alphabet with Nimcha if you’re playing exotics.
Race 2: Laurels Function Centre – Book Now Mdn Plate — 12:50, 1102m
The question in this one is simple: do you take the horse that keeps turning up, or the horse with the upside and the soft run? I’ll take the former. Beau Strada (gate 7, W Egan) has the most reliable current profile in the race: 3-35232 tells you he’s not guessing anymore, just waiting for the right setup. Over the past three months he’s gone around five times for four placings, averaging a finishing spot around the top three. That’s not flashy, it’s dependable.
W Egan is a positive booking too. He’s only had four rides at Sale but he’s put every one of them in the frame, and he tends to ride these 1100m races with intent. From gate 7 he’ll need to be positive early, but that can be a feature, not a bug, in a maiden where plenty will be happy to take a trail and hope luck arrives.
Red Rose Cafe (gate 1, J Bowditch) is the obvious threat because the draw gives Bowditch options and he’s won on his only ride at Sale. If this turns into a stop start 1100 where leaders control it, barrier 1 can win the race for you.
Bet: Win bet Beau Strada. If you’re more cautious, go each-way and keep Red Rose Cafe as the saver.

Where the money goes
This meeting’s about leaning into what’s repeatable and avoiding getting cute in thin maidens. The repeatable angle is the Freedman stable at Sale. Twelve runners, six winners, ten placings is a proper sample, and it’s enough for me to take their runner on trust in the opener.
NAP: Alphabet (Race 1, 12:10). Freedman barn absolutely fires at this track and Alphabet looks the one with the right “building to it” profile rather than the one relying on race shape.
Value: Beau Strada (Race 2, 12:50) if the market drifts because punters get bored of 2s and 3s. Five runs this prep for four placings is exactly what you want in a maiden with limited exposed talent.
Banker for multis: Beau Strada to place. He keeps turning up and doing the job.
Each-way play: Beau Strada again if you get a price that respects the draw risk but underestimates how often he lands in the finish.
Course angle to file: when the Freedmans bring a runner to Sale, don’t overthink it. Keep following that footprint until the market fully catches up.
