Strathalbyn Racing Tips 8 June 2026 — can Hickmott cash in early?
Opening
There’s a clear theme running through this Strathalbyn meeting: Michael Hickmott has stacked the early races with the right kind of profiles. Not “flashy trial talk” profiles. The ones that keep turning up, keep finding the line, and keep putting themselves in the finish without getting the right breaks yet. That matters at a country meeting where races can be decided by who controls the first 200 metres and who doesn’t panic when the tempo changes.
We’ve got six races on turf, and while there’s not a deep history for many of these horses at this track, the rider and stable numbers here are strong enough to lean on. These Strathalbyn racing tips are written the way you’d talk it through with a mate: who I’m backing, why I think they get the run, and what I’m doing with my money.
Strathalbyn — the setup
Limited course form across today’s fields. Most runners have one or two prior starts here, so I’m treating “course stats” as a reference point, not a reason to steam in.
On the rider side, we do have proper sample sizes. Ben Price has ridden eight times at Strathalbyn for two wins and five placings, which is a serious strike in a small pool. J Holder has the volume too, and hits the frame often enough here to trust his judgement in positioning.
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ben Price | 8 | 2 | 5 | 25.0 | 62.5 |
| J Holder | 22 | 3 | 11 | 13.64 | 50.0 |
| Connor Murtagh | 25 | 2 | 11 | 8.0 | 44.0 |
| Kayla Crowther | 23 | 2 | 9 | 8.7 | 39.13 |
Trainer note worth respecting: A J Gluyas has had 13 runners at Strathalbyn for five wins. That’s not noise. When you see that name in a maiden, you assume the horse is there to run, not just to look around.

Race-by-race
Race 1: Roadside Services And Solutions Mdn Plate — 11:35, 2242m
Shamastar looks the right anchor to start the day. He’s 3rd then 2nd from two starts, and that’s the best kind of maiden profile over a staying trip: he’s already found pressure, already found the line, and now gets Todd Pannell from gate 1 to control the shape instead of chasing it.
The trip is a big separator at Strathalbyn when you’re dealing with maidens. Plenty will travel fine to the 400 and then fail the final 150. Shamastar has already shown he can sustain a run, and in the last 90 days he’s gone to the races twice for two placings. That’s a neat, uncomplicated progression.
The danger is Blabber Mouth, who keeps knocking. His recent form line reads 5-2522, and he’s the sort that lands on speed and makes you earn it. He also placed on his only start at Strathalbyn, so he’s already proven he handles the place.
Staking: Win bet Shamastar. Exacta saver Shamastar and Blabber Mouth if you want a little cover.
Race 2: Sportsbet Jockey Watch Mdn Plate — 12:10, 1203m
Here’s the puzzle: who actually wants to win a maiden sprint, and who’s just collecting minor cheques? I’m siding with Platino because he’s got the same “3rd then 2nd” profile as Shamastar, and Hickmott has booked Pannell again. That is a stable telling you they’re not mucking around.
Barrier 5 gives Pannell options. He can hold a spot if there’s a rush, or slide across if they overdo it early. Either way, Platino has already shown he can cop a run and still finish. In the last 90 days, Shamastar and Platino both have two runs for two placings between them in their respective form cycles, and that’s the kind of consistency I like in this grade.
No Bail is the danger. He’s only had two starts for a 3rd and a 9th, but he placed on his only course visit. He draws 12, which screams “work early or snag and need luck”, so you’re betting on how clean a run he gets.
Staking: Win bet Platino. If Platino is short, I’d rather take a quinella with No Bail than chase a tiny win price.
Race 3: Sportsbet Same Race Multi Mdn Plate — 12:45, 1203m
The market would normally obsess over the unbeaten horse, and Pierroplane is exactly that: one start, one win. But I’m not treating it as an automatic moral because plenty of these jump from a soft maiden win into a deeper maiden and find out it’s a different sport.
I still land on Pierroplane as the best bet in the race because Travis Doudle doesn’t waste wins. He tends to place them to keep winning, and Ben Price is a big positive at this track. Price has 8 rides here for 2 wins and 5 placings, so when he’s in a maiden with a last start winner, I listen.
The danger is Extra Fling. Second at his only start is the right first-up message, and the Jolly and Potter camp can get one to improve sharply second time out. If Pierroplane gets cluttered from gate 6 and Extra Fling finds clear air, that’s the path to an upset.
Staking: Win bet Pierroplane. Keep Extra Fling for a saver if you’re staking bigger than usual.

Race 4: Sportsbet Set A Deposit Limit Mdn Plate — 13:20, 1476m
This is the “weight and honesty” race. A few of these have had enough chances, but Hell’s On Fire at least looks like he’s trending the right way: 5th, 6th, then 2nd. That’s a horse learning how to race, and Hickmott keeps his name all over this meeting for a reason.
From barrier 8 he probably lands midfield with cover. That’s fine at this trip. You don’t want to be chasing hard from the corner at Strathalbyn if the leader pinches a break. Hell’s On Fire looks like one that can build from the 600 and keep going, rather than needing the perfect sit and sprint.
The danger is Goldfields Grey. He’s got the bigger weight, but he’s been competitive in better maidens than some of these and draws to get a run if Kayla Crowther makes good decisions early. Crowther doesn’t win often here, but she places plenty, and that can be enough in a messy maiden.
Staking: Each-way Hell’s On Fire. If the market overreacts and makes Goldfields Grey a clear favourite under 58kg plus, I’m happy to oppose it.
Race 5: Sportsbet Fast Form Mdn Plate — 13:55, 1476m
I’m coming at this one through the contrast. Took Gardner is the progressive type: one run, one 2nd. The rest of the field has a fair bit of “been there, done that, didn’t win”. That’s usually the simplest angle in a maiden at this level: back the one that’s still improving.
Alysha Warren’s booking is more than acceptable, and gate 3 means Took Gardner should land in the first four without burning fuel. If he runs to that first-up placing again, he’s the one they all have to run down late.
The danger is Paganini, who at least knows how to land in the money. He placed on his only course start and has enough recent form to suggest he’ll be around the mark again, even if winning is his problem. This is where you ask a hard question: do you want to back a horse that keeps placing, or do you want to back a horse that looks like it’s about to win? I’m choosing the latter.
Staking: Win bet Took Gardner. If you’re playing multiples, Paganini is the place leg, not the win.
Race 6: Adelaide Galvanising Industries Hcp (C1) — 14:30, 1203m
The market problem here is the topweight. Precipice carries 61kg and draws 13. That’s a proper task in a 1200m handicap, even if he has the class edge. If he’s forced to work early from that gate, he’s vulnerable late.
I’d rather be with Darlinc. He draws gate 1, carries 54.5kg, and his recent form includes a win two starts back before a couple of poor ones. That’s exactly the kind of horse I want in a Class 1 at a country track: get the run, control the rail, and make the others loop. He’s also from the Kluske camp, who place four out of every eleven runners they’ve brought to Strathalbyn. Not dominant, but solid enough that you trust the placement.
Havilah is the danger. He comes off a win (477631), and while it’s only one previous run at Strathalbyn, he’s going well now and that counts for more than old track trivia.
Staking: Win bet Darlinc. If Precipice drifts because of the gate and weight, include him in a small saver quinella, but I’m not building the bet around him.
The plays
This card feels like one of those Strathalbyn days where you don’t need to be clever, just disciplined. I’m trusting the stables that have shown intent and the horses that have been finishing their races off.
NAP: Pierroplane (Race 3, 12:45). Unbeaten, and the Ben Price factor at this track matters when you’re trying to keep a maiden winner rolling.
Value: Darlinc (Race 6, 14:30). Rail draw and light weight can beat the “better horse” that’s stuck wide under 61kg.
Banker for multis: Shamastar (Race 1, 11:35). Two starts, two placings, and gate 1 with Pannell gives him every chance to control the race instead of chasing it.
Each-way: Hell’s On Fire (Race 4, 13:20). The 5-6-2 progression reads like a horse that’s about to put a maiden away.
Course angle to keep: When Ben Price rides a live chance at Strathalbyn, it’s rarely wasted. If he lands another last start winner here next meeting, I’m starting my form around it.
