Taree Racing Tips 23 June — is Powerful Tune the banker?

Racingbase Staff Racingbase Staff

There’s a funny little tension running through this Taree card: plenty of these races are still “maiden messy”, but the last has a horse with a clean, simple angle punters can actually build around. Powerful Tune turns up with a win at his only Taree run and lands in a race where the map should finally let him race like a horse that knows what it’s doing.

That’s the hook, but it’s not the whole story. We’ve got five races on the turf, a stack of lightly-raced types, and a couple of stables making the meeting worth your time, especially K A Lees, who brings a small but pointed hand. These Taree racing tips lean on two things: who’s already handled this track and who’s trending the right way right now, not who has the prettiest name on paper.

If you want one quick takeaway before the detail: I’m happy to be with Powerful Tune late, and I’ll play the earlier maidens more carefully, because the data is thin and the fields are the type that can make smart people look silly.

Taree, the setup today

We don’t get a rich “track specialists” layer across the meeting. Most of today’s runners have either one or two previous goes at Taree, which is useful as a note but not something you build a whole argument on.

Where the numbers do bite is with the riders. There are several jockeys with proper sample size here, and it’s a track where familiar hands keep turning up in the placings.

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
B Looker 25 6 12 24.00 48.00
A Bullock 18 4 12 22.22 66.67
Liberty Smyth 30 6 14 20.00 46.67
Madeline Owen 17 4 6 23.53 35.29
Anna Roper 29 4 10 13.79 34.48

Trainer-wise, the stable with the most meaningful body of work at Taree among those we’re dealing with today is K A Lees: 30 runners here for 5 wins and 11 placings. That’s not dominance, but it’s “knows how to place them” territory, and the stable has multiple live hopes across the meeting.

Race-by-race: Taree predictions

Race 1: Mvrc Website Live Mdn Hcp — 12:30, 1094m

Dream A Little appeals as the one who can finally get it done if the inside draw lets him hold a spot and build into the race. Gate 1 over 1094m at Taree is exactly the kind of set-up that turns “always thereabouts” into “first past the post”, and his recent form string says he’s been around the mark without landing the punch.

The race shape looks kinder than it first reads too. There are a few who can push forward, but plenty of these want the same stalking lane. From the paint, A Gibbons can make this a simple ride: hold your position early, don’t chase anything silly, and be the one that can quicken when the wide gates start burning petrol.

The danger I keep coming back to is Buzz Saw despite the awkward draw (14). He’s the one with the clearest “improving 3 year old” profile in the field on exposed form, and if they overdo it early, he’s the type who can keep coming when others have already spent their race.

Staking: Small win bet Dream A Little. Saver quinella with Buzz Saw if you want insurance in a thin maiden.

Race 2: Xxxx Country Boosted Mdn Plate — 13:05, 1531m

Here’s the puzzle: do you side with the horse who keeps putting itself in the finish, or do you take the “one more chance” type that finds a way to miss when it matters?

I’m leaning into consistency with Show Us Ya Texts. The form line reads like a horse that turns up every time, and the draw (8) is workable over this trip if Anna Roper can get him into a rhythm. The clincher is the recent strike: in the last 90 days he’s had 4 runs and finished in the placings twice, averaging a finishing position of 2.75. That’s not glamorous, but it’s a proper platform for a maiden plate like this.

Bonjour Bill is the obvious danger because he’s been competitive for a while and the rider booking is a positive. He’s had three Taree runs and hit the frame once, which isn’t a stamp of authority, but it’s enough to say he handles the place. If he finds the lead without working, he can make you pay for letting him control the tempo.

Staking: Each-way Show Us Ya Texts. If the market is short, I’d rather back him for a place and keep the win bet small.

Race 3: Tab Venue Mode Mdn Plate — 13:40, 1367m

I’m starting with the contender because it’s hard to dodge: Cool Zousain draws barrier 1 and comes in off a profile that screams “about to win”, even if it’s still early in the story. He’s 22 on the form line, and in the last 90 days he’s had 2 runs for 2 placings with an average finishing position of 2.0. That’s the right kind of pressure for a maiden to break through.

He’s also already shown he can run well at Taree, placing on his only start here. One run at the track is not a trend, but it’s a nice little tick when plenty of these are guessing.

The mare who can absolutely spoil it is Poshy’s Girl. She keeps finding one better (222) and that’s a headache for punters, but it’s also a sign she’s fit, honest, and gets into the fight. If the race turns into a sit-and-sprint from the 500m, she’s the type who can pinch it late when the favourite gets held up looking for air.

This is also a race where the Lees stable has multiple runners on the card overall, and their broader Taree record is solid enough to respect: 30 runners here for 5 wins and 11 placings. That doesn’t tip the race by itself, but it stops you from getting cute and opposing them on principle.

Staking: Win bet Cool Zousain. If you’re playing exotics, keep Poshy’s Girl onside.

Race 4: Cafe Nosh Plate (C1) — 14:15, 1750m

The market usually overreacts to one last-start run at this grade, but this race is more about who gets the right run to the 600m than who has the flashiest recent headline.

I’m going with Elite Delight from gate 1. The inside alley over 1750m gives Mollie Fitzgerald every chance to hold a midfield spot and stay out of trouble, and this field has enough wide draws and mixed patterns that a soft run can be worth more than a kilo or two on the back. It’s a “trust the map” play as much as anything.

If you want the horse with a genuine course note, Kissavos belongs in the conversation. He’s had two goes at Taree for a win and a placing. Again, that’s not specialist talk, but it’s a strong sign he’s comfortable here, and his recent form has been honest without being bulletproof.

The danger is Still Rising from gate 2. If he lands closer than expected and gets a clean crack, he’s the type who can pop up at odds in a Class 1 where plenty have a question to answer.

Staking: Watch the first couple of races for pattern, then bet accordingly. As it sits: small win bet Elite Delight, saver on Kissavos if the price is fair.

Race 5: Events @ Mvrc Hcp (C1) — 14:55, 1094m

This is the race I want to bet into with some confidence, because the profile is clean and the track note is meaningful without being forced.

Powerful Tune looks the banker of the meeting. He’s only had one run at Taree and he won it, and that’s the exact kind of “been here, done it” edge I like in a short sprint handicap where the race can be over in 200 metres if you miss the jump. He also comes in off a sharp recent record in the last 90 days: 2 runs for a win and another placing, averaging a finish of 2.0. That’s not guesswork form, that’s current form.

The map works for him too. From barrier 8 he’s not cuddled up against the fence, but he should get clear air and a decent run into the race. If they go hard early, he’s the one I trust to absorb it and still have a kick late.

Kissavos is the obvious danger because he’s in the same “keeps turning up” lane, and he’s already shown he can win at this track. If he lands in front of Powerful Tune and gets first crack, he can absolutely pinch it.

Staking: Win bet Powerful Tune. If you’re playing a multi, he’s the leg. I’d save exacta with Kissavos rather than spraying wider.

The plays: where the money goes

NAP: Powerful Tune (Race 5, 14:55). The meeting doesn’t hand you many straightforward angles, but this one does: proven at Taree on his only visit and arrives with recent form that reads like a horse still on the up.

Value: Show Us Ya Texts (Race 2, 13:05) each-way. Two placings from four recent runs is the kind of steady pressure that wins maidens when the favourites find traffic or over-race.

Banker for multis: Cool Zousain (Race 3, 13:40). Drawn to get the run, and his recent two-from-two placing profile says he’s ready to convert.

Each-way play: Show Us Ya Texts again, because in these midweek maidens I’d rather back the horse that keeps putting itself in the finish than the one that flashes once every three starts.

Course angle: When you’re weighing up riders, don’t ignore the Taree regulars. A Bullock hits the frame two-thirds of the time here from 18 rides, and B Looker wins often enough (6 from 25) to matter when you’re splitting hairs late in the day.

If K A Lees keeps turning up with multiple runners on these provincial programs, the stable stays on my short list every time they draw a soft gate at Taree.

Where can I find the best odds for Taree races?

Prices can vary by bookmaker, so the practical play is to compare accounts you already have open. If you’re betting close to jump time, check a couple of boards rather than taking the first price you see.
