Grafton Racing Tips 30 March 2026 — can Tomba go back to back?

Racingbase Staff Racingbase Staff

Tomba turns up in the BM82 with a proper winning streak and the sort of draw that lets A Mallyon decide the race from the first 200 metres. That alone is a decent angle, but it’s also the meeting’s theme: a few progressive types stepping into deeper water against older, tougher horses who know every bump in the Grafton straight.

You’ve got six races on turf, mostly around the mile plus a staying test over 2439m, and the card reads like country racing often does: plenty of honest form, a couple of lightly raced runners with upside, and one or two that look overbet because the last-start finishing spot flatters them.

These Grafton racing tips are written the way you’d talk it through with a mate: who I want to back, who can beat them, and what I’d actually do with the wallet. No filler, no “data terminal” vibes, just a clear opinion race by race.

Grafton today, from a punter’s angle

There isn’t a stack of deep track history across the fields. Most runners have one or two previous goes at Grafton, so treat course “records” as seasoning rather than the whole meal. Where it does matter is in the human element: a couple of jockeys and one stable in particular consistently outperform their raw strike rates because they ride and place like they understand this circuit.

If you want one anchor for the day, it’s this: A Mallyon has had 12 rides at Grafton for 5 wins and 8 placings. That’s not a tiny sample, and it’s enough for me to upgrade anything he gets on, especially when the horse can hold a spot early.

One more practical note before we dive in: barriers matter here because plenty of these are big fields, and several of the leading hopes have awkward gates. I’ll happily back class and momentum, but if your pick needs luck from gate 16, you want a better price than “fair”.

Race-by-race: Grafton predictions

Race 1: Rabbit Ride-Share Mdn Plate — 13:10, 1219m

Diva Rouge looks the most obvious “today’s the day” runner in the opener. She comes in off a form line that reads like progression rather than noise: 34-021. You don’t fluke winning your most recent start after running top-four in your lead-ups, and she’s still lightly raced enough to improve again.

The headache is the map: she’s drawn 16. Over 1219m, that’s a genuine decision for B Looker. If he burns early, he risks sitting three wide. If he snags, he risks giving a start to something from gate 1 or 2 that can control the rail. I still want to be with the filly because she’s the one arriving in form and a lot of these have been finding a way to miss.

The danger is Foxy Artist from barrier 1. Two starts for a 3rd and a 4th (34-) is the right foundation for a maiden and the inside draw gives Jett Newman the chance to hold a spot and make it a sprint. If Foxy Artist gets cheap sectionals, the wide horses might never get on terms.

Staking: Win bet Diva Rouge. Small saver exacta Foxy Artist over Diva Rouge if you like insurance against the gate.

Race 2: Lowes Petroleum Service Country Boosted Hcp (C1) — 13:50, 1553m

This is the first proper betting race on the card because the profiles line up. I’m with Xtreme. He’s a 3yo who keeps turning up and running to a level: 2-4212. That’s a horse who travels, finds the line, and makes his own luck. Barrier 5 is perfect at this trip because B Looker can land midfield with cover and go when it suits.

He doesn’t need everything to go right either. If they run along, he’s proven late. If they crawl, he’s shown he can take a position and still kick. That versatility is gold in a country C1 where tactics win as often as talent.

The one you have to respect is Referees with A Mallyon. The horse has placed in both its Grafton runs (two starts here, two placings), and Mallyon’s Grafton record is as solid as it gets on the day: 12 rides, 5 wins, 8 placings. The knock is weight and gate 10, which can turn “best horse” into “hardest run”.

Staking: Win bet Xtreme. Quinella saver with Referees.

Race 3: Valley Protective Services Country Boosted Mdn Hcp — 14:25, 1553m

Here’s the puzzle: do you back the consistent grinder, or the one with the “maiden handicap” swing that can pinch it? I land on Graceful Warrior. The form reads like a horse crying out for a win: 7-3933. He’s been thereabouts, and this trip looks right for a runner who can sustain a run without needing a 200m burst.

A Mallyon taking the ride matters too. Over 1553m in a maiden handicap, I want someone who will put the horse in the race early and not get cute. Graceful Warrior has also placed in both Grafton starts. That’s only two goes here, so don’t call it track love, but it tells you he handles the circuit.

The danger is Jennibelle, who has been remarkably honest at this track: three runs at Grafton for two placings. From barrier 3, L P Rolls should get every favour. If Graceful Warrior has one of those “finds one better” days again, Jennibelle can be the one to punish him.

Staking: Each-way Graceful Warrior. Saver win Jennibelle if you want to lean into the map.

Race 4: Prestige Wedding & Event Hire Mdn Plate — 15:05, 1881m

Razor’s Magic is the one I want when the maidens stretch out. His form has been knocking loudly without getting the photo: 4-35343. That’s not a hype profile, it’s a punter’s profile: reliable, keeps finding the line, and eventually lands a race when he meets the right depth.

Barrier 4 helps because Jett Newman can roll into a spot without burning, and that matters at 1881m where you can lose the race in the first 400m by doing too much. He doesn’t need to lead, but he does need clean air from the 600m and a run when it counts.

I’m wary of the lightly raced Bobbiwaa (form 724) purely because he gets the inside gate and a weight pull as a 3yo. If he steps forward even a length or two at his fourth start, he’s right in the finish without needing to be a star.

Staking: Win bet Razor’s Magic. Small saver Bobbiwaa if the market gives you something back for the risk.

Race 5: Ken Gill Painter (Bm66) — 15:40, 2439m

This is where the day gets interesting, because the staying race isn’t a lottery. Mr Plume is the play. His recent form line says he’s fit and in the zone: 663133. He keeps putting himself in the fight and he keeps running the trip out, which is half the battle when they go 2439m at a country meeting.

He’s also been a consistent Grafton performer without winning here: four runs at the track for three placings. That’s enough to say he turns up at this circuit and runs his race. Barrier 9 is the niggle, but over the staying trip it’s far less poisonous than it is in the sprints. B Lerena doesn’t win often at Grafton off a small sample of rides, but he can ride a horse into the race and that’s what you want here.

The horse I can’t ignore is Fulmen Filou. He’s carrying 132.2, but the stable and the horse are clearly flying: 4-22117. He also won on his only start at Grafton, which tells you he handles the track. The question is whether he controls it from barrier 5 with that weight, or whether he gets into a slog late and the lighter weights can outstay him.

Staking: Win bet Mr Plume. Save on Fulmen Filou because he’s the class and map threat.

Race 6: Edwards Irrigation Consulting (Bm82) — 16:15, 1553m

The market can do what it wants, I’m siding with the stable that actually wins races at this track. Tomba comes in as the meeting’s cleanest profile: 0-3311, drawn 10, and he gets A Mallyon</strong}. When Mallyon rides at Grafton, he doesn’t wait for luck. He makes his own, and that matters when you’re backing a horse chasing a hat-trick.

The trainer angle is real too. M J Dunn has had 17 runners at Grafton for 7 wins and 11 placings. That’s a proper body of work, and it’s why I’m happy to take a firm view on Tomba even in a BM82 where plenty bring credible form. If Tomba lands midfield with cover, his turn of foot can put this away quickly.

The danger is Pressalong from barrier 12. He’s in the right moment form-wise (47-321) and he’s a genuine Grafton emerging pattern horse: three runs here, one win, three placings. He’s done nothing wrong at the track. The wide gate forces L P Rolls to make a call early, but if he gets in without spending, he’s the one who can stalk and pounce.

I’ll also keep an eye on Full Regalia (form 4131-2). She’s been a model of consistency, and that last-start second says she’s still in the same frame of mind. She’s had one run at Grafton for a second, which is encouraging, but it’s still just a single data point.

Staking: Win bet Tomba. Exacta box Tomba and Pressalong for a tidy saver.

The plays

If you’re looking for one horse to hang the meeting on, I want to be with Tomba in the 16:15. The stable has a long-term edge at Grafton and the Mallyon booking is exactly what you want when the pressure goes on late in the day.

For value, Mr Plume in the staying race (15:40) appeals because he keeps turning up and running the trip, and his Grafton record reads like a horse who belongs here: four starts for three placings. In a BM66 over 2439m, that’s the kind of reliability you can actually bet.

The safest multi anchor is Xtreme at 13:50. That form line doesn’t scream brilliance, but it screams professionalism, and that’s what wins these Country Boosted races.

If you prefer an each-way play, Graceful Warrior (14:25) ticks the “keeps finding the line” box and gets the best Grafton rider on the card. You might not get rich, but you should get a run for your money.

One course angle to keep in your back pocket for the next Grafton meeting: when Dunn and Mallyon team up here, they’re rarely guessing.

FAQ: Grafton today

What time does racing start at Grafton today?

Racing kicks off at 13:10 with the Rabbit Ride-Share Maiden Plate over 1219m.

Who are the top trainers and jockeys at Grafton?

On today’s card, A Mallyon stands out: 12 rides at Grafton for 5 wins and 8 placings. Trainer-wise, M J Dunn has the strongest meaningful record among the active stables: 17 runners here for 7 wins and 11 placings.

What are the best bets at Grafton today?

My Grafton best bets are Tomba (Race 6, 16:15) to win and Xtreme (Race 2, 13:50) as the earlier anchor. For an each-way option, I’m happy to play Graceful Warrior (Race 3, 14:25).

Where can I find the best odds for Grafton races?

Prices move quickly in country racing, especially late. If you’re shopping for Grafton odds, compare a few books close to jump time and keep an eye on late firming around runners like Tomba (Race 6) and Xtreme (Race 2), who look like the types money finds.

How much should I trust course form at Grafton on this card?

Most runners have only one or two previous starts at Grafton, so treat it as a guide, not gospel. Where the course numbers do matter today is with riders and stables that have enough volume: A Mallyon (12 rides) and M J Dunn (17 runners) both clear that bar.
