Might And Power was a force to be reckoned with in Australian racing in 1997 and 1998. The Jack Denham-trained galloper won the Caulfield Cup (2400m) by a 7.5 length margin in 1997 before holding off the challenge from Doriemus in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) that year. In 1998 he took out the Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill by five lengths before winning the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) by more than 10. His final start of that autumn saw him claim the Doomben Cup from Intergaze and he would later go on to win the Cox Plate (2040m) in the spring of 1998.

2. ROUGH HABIT (1991/1992/1993)

One of the finest horses to have come out of New Zealand, Rough Habit was a permanent fixture of racing in Australasia from 1990 until 1995. He won 29 races in that time period, including 11 at the highest level. He dominated the Queensland racing scene, picking up the Doomben Cup on three occasions as well as twice taking out the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m). He won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick in 1992, while in 1994, he narrowly went down to Solvit in the Cox Plate (2040m). The son of Roughcast was dominant in the 1991 edition of this race, while he showed all of his fighting qualities in both 1992 and when landing the hat-trick in 1993.

3. DEFIER (2004)

Defier was a quality middle distance galloper at a time when Australian racing was spoilt for superstars. The Guy Walter-trained galloper won three Group 1 races, claiming victory in the Doomben Cup in 2004 to complement his wins in the 2002 George Main Stakes (1600m) and 2002 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m). He was a regular competitor against the likes of Lonhro, Northerly and Fields Of Omagh and finished runner-up in the 2002 and 2003 Cox Plates at Moonee Valley .

4. STREAMA (2014)

One of the last top gallopers for the late trainer, Guy Walter, Streama had her last ever start in the 2014 Doomben Cup, taking out that edition from Leebaz and Junoob. She seemed to save some of her best for Queensland and was placed in the Stradbroke and the Tatts Tiara in 2013. Earlier in her career she jumped as a $1.45 favourite in the 2012 edition of the Australian Oaks (2400m) and arrived in the nick of time to win that race, while other major wins came in the Flight Stakes (1600m) and the George Main Stakes (1600m).

5. SCENIC SHOT (2009/2011)

Scenic Shot is a multiple winner of the Doomben Cup, taking out the race in 2009 and 2011. The Daniel Morton-trained galloper kicked off his career in Western Australia and was amongst the better gallopers in his home state as a three and four-year-old before heading to the eastern seaboard. The son of Scenic was runner-up in the 2007 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington before showing an affinity for racing in Brisbane, winning three on the trot in 2009, including the Doomben Cup ahead of the handy Racing To Win. He won the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington later that year before returning from a long layoff to take out the Doomben Cup again in 2011.
