KINGSFORD SMITH CUP BETTING SNAPSHOT
It is the Godolphin three-yer-old, Paulele, that heads the market with ladbrokes at the $4.20 quote, just ahead of the Kiwi galloper, Entriviere at the $5.50. Those two filled the minors on a Heavy track in the Doomben 10000 (1200m) at Eagle Farm this year behind Mazu, who is not in this race.
Apache Chase ($11) and Ellsberg ($13) head a host of others at $15 and they are Isotope, Laws Of Indices and Eleven Eleven. Away Game, Signore Fox and Rothfire head the rest of the 16 horse field and the five emergencies at the $17.
KINGSFORD SMITH CUP BETTING SNAPSHOT
Six runners come out of the Doomben 10000 and it was Paulele that settled handy before just missing out, while Entriviere overcame a tardy start to produce the fastest last 400m and 200m to finish half a length away. Paulele went 9.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which are the best last start figures of any runner.
The son of Dawn Approach has placed at his past three, including a solid effort in the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick during The Championships. Entriviere is three wins and two placings from five attempts on Soft or worse and draws wide but comes into it with pace in the race.
Signore Fox was 4th in the Doomben 10000, while there are question marks over Rothfire, who was 5th. Hard to make a case for the others that come out of the Group 1 but worth noting that Isotope produced the third fastest last 400m and 200m, coming from well back.
Formlines are many and varied here and we see three handy mares come up north after running in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 7. They are Away Game, September Run and Brooklyn Hustle, who were 2nd, 3rd and 6th respectively.
They went slow early on in that race and Away Game couldn’t catch the winner. September Run produced the fastest last 400m, while Brooklyn Hustle produced the fastest last 200m. A better tempo and they can both fire.
Away Game and Brooklyn Hustle have both gone more than 16 lengths faster than standard in the past, doing so in the Oakleigh Plate (Away Game this year and Brooklyn Hustle in 2021). That is better than what any horse in this race has produced in the past two years.
Ellsberg might be suited by the 1300m and was 3rd at his most recent start, which was six weeks ago in the All Aged Stakes (1400m) on a Heavy track. He likes those conditions.
Apache Chase is an interesting runner. He led and was run down in the $440,000 The Archer (1300m) at Rockhampton earlier this month. He was first up and improved eight lengths on figures at his last campaign to claim the $250,000 The Gateway (1400m) here last December before placing in the Buffering (1350m) at Doomben.
Can a roughies salute? Good luck if you are a fan of Brooklyn Hustle but others at nice odds include Scallopini and Niccanova. The latter is at cricket score odds ($101). Both are emergencies but like the wet and are not without a place chance. Sierra Sue is a classy specimen but there are question marks over her on the wet.
KINGSFORD SMITH CUP TIPS AND BEST BETS
Pace in the race is key here and Apache Chase, Rothfire, Ellsberg will go forward and ensure some degree of tempo. Away Game should be handy. Safe play might be to back Entriviere, who came home well over the 1200m in the Doomben 10000 last time and should have improvement to come at her second run back. She might be a punters nemesis but Brooklyn Hustle is well worth consideration. The enigmatic galloper always produces excellent figures on Soft ground or worse and is one for one at the track and trip after rocketing home to take out the Dane Ripper Stakes here last year. She has drawn well and represents the value.
